At a quick glance you could easily mistake these pollen munching flies as some sort of hymenoptera (bees and wasps), but trust me they most definitely belong to the diptera (flies and mosquitoes). They arrived in large numbers shortly after I put these flowers on my window ledge. Found in mixed hardwood forest. The two individuals in this series were partially embedded in a mature slime mold fruiting body (thinking Fuligo septica) on a fallen hardwood tree. They were not moving at all, maybe busy feeding?
I was very happy to see these as it has been one of my goals in the last couple of years to get relatively clear in-situ/in-myxo pics of this species. Usually they are covered in substrate.
Single exposure, uncropped, handheld, in situ. Canon MT-26EX flash unit, Ian McConnachie and plastic cup diffuser.
