A closer shot of an individual I posted a few months ago. You can see that in addition to its own cryptic coloration, it actually has moss/algae growing on it.

Thank you everyone for your visits, faves and comments, they are always appreciated :)

This spider was originally tucked up to the base of a pinecone that had the exact same coloration, mottled with bits of green moss or algae on it just like this stick. I'm still not sure how I noticed it there, but I do recall I was into lichens that day, so was looking closely at potential lichen-y photo subjects. Here it is after three of us had crowded around to admire it and take photos, after it had attempted to rappel down a line but then been collected back onto its stick.

This species ranges all across the eastern US, from the coast way over into Texas, where I saw plenty of them in 2018. Despite this range, I don't see many of them around here, and have never seen one so wonderfully green, but there it is, blending perfectly into the moss and wood colors. Isn't nature fantastic!

This spider was found during the last Maryland Biodiversity Project outing before the virus arrived, when we could still all walk freely together and point out cool things to each other. I'm really glad I wasn't too lazy or busy to attend that one!

Humpbacked Orbweaver, Eustala anastera

Beautiful cryptic little bird that prefers to run amongst the ground cover than to fly making it particularly vulnerable to predators.

Much reduced in its range and distribution.

Lucky for me I have then close by.

Unfortunately local council workers sprayed a large piece of habitat locally for gorse, where this image was taken, killing all the "Fernies " there.

Of course the gorse is back and flourishing as it will, seeds being viable in the ground for 25 years or more assures its return, yet the Fernbirds will not.

A Eurasian Wryneck (Jynx torquilla) perched on a tree, blending almost perfectly with the lichen-covered bark. This elusive woodpecker species, often hard to spot due to its cryptic plumage, was photographed during springtime.

Ein Wendehals (Jynx torquilla) sitzt auf einem Ast und verschmiilzt fast unsichtbar mit der flechtenbewachsenen Rinde. Diese schwer zu entdeckende Spechtart habe ich im Frühling fotografiert.

Cryptic, uncommon nightbird of lowland and lower foothill forests (to 800 meters). Males show extensive barring on wings, whitish lower belly, and irregular white blotches on the breast. Females are warmer brown, almost rufous, with less wing barring and a wide “necklace” of white blotches on the breast. The only frogmouth in much of its western range. Vocalizations vary; male gives a series of rippling clear whistles and both sexes give harsh nasal croaks.

I have previously uploaded a photograph of this very interesting species setting out the then current thinking on its identification.

Matters have moved on since then and all 'wood whites' in Ireland can now be safely assigned as Cryptic Wood White; except when in the Burren area where the 'standard' Wood

White (Leptidea sinapis) also occurs alongside the Cryptic Wood White.

This one was photographed in Portmarnock (at a new site) on some form of Vetch. Bush Vetch (Vicia sepium) is considered to be one of its larval host plants but I'm unsure which species of vetch is in the photo.

Genus Hersilla, also known as two tailed spider. They are sometimes known as long-spinnered bark spiders, due to their greatly enlarged spinnerets.

Cryptic in plumage and erratic in flight, these shorebirds are so difficult to hunt that a skilled shooter is known as a "sniper". Lucas Co.

HotAdonis is fighting today!

Alright, it’s fight day, people! You know I’m coming in, fired up and ready to throw down at 2 PM. I've been putting in the work, and now it’s time to show up. Check out my fight and other amazing fights today and let’s make some noise—this is going to be a banger!

Cryptic and protected by spines, this fish was content to sit still while several divers shined lights on it and admired it. West side of Guanaja, in the Caribbean Sea.

A cryptic and overtly pretentious title to start the new year but I’m sure you bright buttons will work it out. 😊

Think of one of those little props from the Monopoly set. Yes, that’s the one, the hat! 🎩🐕 🚗 👢🚢

So, yesterday I changed my ‘Idiot’ hat for the ‘Sanctimonious’ one, on account of going for a run in the howling wind and pouring rain after being incapacitated recently due to a severe case of man flu, well I had a sniffle, that counts, Shirley?

The run was quite cathartic and preferable to beating oneself with that wild salmon again on the frozen mountain top, so as a reward I enjoyed a large slab of Christmas cake and a chunk of Wensleydale. You simply must have cheese with Christmas cake, it’s the law!

I also had a nice bottle of red waiting, with my name on it. Well, it says ‘Marques de Something’, so with a bit of artistic licence, that was close enough for me.

Eerrmmm, maybe I didn’t really think this through, what with the calorific balance an’ all!

OK, maybe I’ll just go quietly and put that ‘Idiot’ hat back on!

Fleet Foxes, maybe not my usual sort of band but this is a great track and a good title for this image. The video has some fantastic locations, you just have to forgive the fact that someone got a little carried away with the sliders! Sometimes ‘more’ is, well….. just that! Oh well, here’s to excess!

Happy New Year everyone. May all your wishes come true and your waistlines return to some semblance of normality.

In a small stream, this Black river turtle (Rhinoclemmys funereal) really blended into the background at the base of a large tree trunk in a leaf-litter speckled pond, Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica.

The shot I got a couple days ago of the spider with its front legs folded beside its head reminded me of this from last year. I didn't post it at the time because I don't like to have manmade objects in photos, but it's weird enough that I decided to go ahead and post now.

I think it's Eustala anastera - humpbacked orbweaver - or possibly another Eustala.

It was a lovely evening for photographing the CWW! I believe the butterflies emerge in the early evening - Every day I mark as many new butterflies as I can as part of my honours degree project, yet later in the evening, there's always a new 'wave' of unmarked butterflies sitting on the vegetation, like the ones in the pictures. I just need to catch one in the act of emerging now!

In the crypt at the Panthéon in Paris, walls and passages curve into unusual gullies that guide people around.

As its name suggests, Phyllodesmium crypticum is a very cryptic species, well-camouflaged amongst the colonies of the soft-coral Xenia in which it lives and on which it feeds. This is another of the many species of aeolid which store zooxanthellae from their food, presumably obtaining nourishment when they photosynthesise. Lembeh Strait, North Sulawesi, Indonesia

Bill Tutte Memorial, Newmarket, High Street, Suffolk.

This memorial is a composition of Harry Gray and Ramon Keeley. It was unveiled September 2014 in Newmarket were Tutte was born.

Wikipedia: William Thomas "Bill" Tutte, May 14, 1917 – May 2, 2002, was a british codebreaker and mathematician. During WWII, he made a brilliant and fundamental advance in cryptanalysis of the Lorenz cipher, a major Nazi German cipher system which was used for top-secret communications within the Wehrmacht High Command.
