Until now, the semi-terrestically freshwater crab Nanhaipotamon hongkongense was due to lack of better distribution knowledge considered a Hong Kong endemic. During a night walk in Shenzhen, however, I found crabs resembling the phenotype of N. hongkongense, so this species is most probably distributed in the southern parts of Guangdong, as well.

Other than N. guangdongense, which was abundant and not too hard to observe at some sites in Zhuhai, I was not able to find a site where N. hongkongense was similarly abundant. The crabs tend to flee and hide in their burrows at the slightest disturbance and may therefore be more cryptic than allied species in southern China.

Of all Nanhaipotamon species, N. hongkongense is the most traded in pet markets even in Europe because of its variable and signalling red or orange colour and vivid behaviour.

Collections of wild animals may pose a threat to current populations in Hong Kong. This and a cryptic life history may be the reason why they did not seem to be as abundant as N. guangdongense.

Looking bright & breezy but then that was before the first round arrived (I'm joking).

We keep these little gems in a very hot, very arid set up, and yet, they are as heavy as stones. I hope to be able to get some eggs in a couple of years from now. Our production will be limited but the babies will certainly be very attractive.

Here are two shots of a tiny Crab Spider (Thomisidae) with cryptic colors that I found on a leaf of Coast Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia, Fagaceae) in the canyon today. It's really tiny, just 580 pixels in these 1:1 macro shots, which comes to 2.3 mm - less than 1/10 inch. (See here for how I figure.) This is not one of the flower-loving Mecaphesa spiders that I've been showing, but something else. It might be a Ground Crab Spider in the genus Xysticus, but I think it's more likely genus Ozyptila. It has stubby front legs with just two spines on the first tibia. I've seen these little spiders before, see this photo and this photo. Whatever it is, it's a surprising spider, so tiny! Just two photos today as there's fire on our mountains. It's hard to get accurate information, but its my impression the fire started near the place I call FAA Peak - the high point between Painted Cave and Arroyo Burro at 3600 feet that hosts a FAA radio transmitter. It's a place I know well, I've gotten many photos there. The winds are pretty nasty tonight, blowing the fire towards Santa Barbara. Our power might go out at any moment, but for some reason it's still going as of almost 8:30 pm. There's a large mandatory evacuation order, but we're just over the line to the north along East Camino Cielo road. Even so, I'm jumpy tonight. I'm doing computer backups as I write this. I hope the forecast storm later this week comes through.
