Sphindus sp., I believe. Found at Bastrop State Park in central Texas, ESE of Austin. Bastrop County, Texas, USA.

There are a lot of downed trees at this State Park and I saw a lot of slime molds on my recent visit. Many of the slime mold fruiting bodies were being grazed upon by these beetles.

Which way do you go?

Cryptic Wood White (Leptidea juvernica) is a near identical lookalike to Wood White (L. sinapis) that was discovered in Ireland a few years ago (2011, having been previously (mis)identified as Leptidea reali since 2001) and has been found to occur across Europe. It has been found from France across to Kazakhstan with records as far north as Finland, but it has not been found to occur in England. They can only be identified with certainty by laboratory examination of their genitalia). Cryptic Wood White is quite a big call as I'm not certain it has been recorded in Estonia, which is where I photographed this one. But the Wood Whites I saw in this area appeared to have the diagnostic courtship ritual of Cryptic Wood White. The male faced the female swinging his antennae like a pendulum and tapping her antennae alternately left and right. Then without any wing flapping, she curled her abdomen round to mate while still facing him. I did not see this individual mate, but I did see another pair in the vicinity. Despite the dark background this butterfly was not in a wood. It was backlit in front of a dark bush in some open grassland, so the grassy habitat also suggests "Cryptic". This one is a male identified by the squarish dark spot at the tip of his forewing. This marking is on the upperwings but their wings are like tissue and so patterns shine through.

Mount Molloy, Queensland, Australia. Octubre 2023.

My father dyed six eggs for Easter and then wrote names on them. Can you figure out the logic behind it? Dad and Nick (my brother) are blue; Mom and Leida (Nick's girlfriend) are pink; and finally Ben (me) and "Tottsie" (Tootsie the poodle) are green.

Why am I paired with the dog?
