The sun has just slipped behind a clearing in the storm clouds and behind the Rocky Mountains as a westbound BNSF coal load begins it's assault on the Rockies at the first gated crossing west of Helena, Montana on a stormy summer night. The crossing gate activation is captured in this 30-second long exposure.

A shot I was never happy with, but 10 years later have decided to upload it. Southern E4 B473 was visiting the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, and was seen in action at Whitefield Crossing on the 28th of May 2011.
CN L536 rolls underneath the former LS&MS and PRR (PFW&C) bridges and the Chicago Skyway at Grand Crossing. Before grade separation in 1907, Grand Crossing consisted of 64 diamonds with over 500 train movements a day. In addition, the intersection of 75th and South Chicago was located at grade with the IC just due north of the junction. It was once known as the most dangerous railroad crossing in the world.
A familiar sight now, though the old Forth Road bridge is still being used, but not at the same levels. The new bridge has 2 expansion (?) joints; the old, over 100, so blindfold, you would know which bridge you are crossing!

As J775 rests in the background, J771 eases south across the diamond at Ames crossing in Crawfordsville. Until 1976, Ames was a three-way crossing with lines of PRR, NYC and Monon ancestry. Seen here, 8519 is on the Monon, and J775 is on the connection from the NYC (Peoria & Eastern) to a stub remnant of the PRR (Terre Haute & Indianapolis) that once reached to South Bend. A single story building one stood to the right of the diamond and controlled everything. It was closed during early Conrail years.

OTIS: "I heard you...I want a hot bath too!"....
