We made our way from Thessaloniki to the island of Crete, where we had hoped to do some hiking but were deterred by the changing seasons. The other reason we came, of course, was for the history, which was ancient even to The Ancients. In this we got all we wished, even if the fabled Palace of Knossos was not quite what we hoped for (more on that later). Mrs. Orca and the Venetian lighthouse, at Rethymno, Crete, Greece.

Elafonisi Island is near the southeast tip of Crete, 43km from Kastelli and 76km from Chania. The road from Chrisoskalitissa continues as a dirt track of 5km to Elafonisi.

This lovely islet was the site of a massacre of 850 women and children by the Turks in 1824. The women and children were hidden there and as the Turks camped on the beaches a horse found the shallow, 0.5 - 0.8 metre-deep water path to the island. The Turks discovered the women and children and slaughtered them. There is a memorial plaque on the highest point of the islet

This is a popular beach with bright white sand and bright blue water. The beach is flat and open to the sun, and is appropriate for families with children, with smooth sand and shallow waters. Walk 50m north to the islet of Elafonisi for more seculed bathing (nudists sometimes come here).

Beach Life, Rethymno, Crete, Greece

I so enjoyed my week long trip to the beautiful island of Crete in Greece back in April 2019 (seems like a lifetime ago now). I recently came across this image and it reminded me of that wonderful morning spent in Rethymno where the sun shone and the skies never looked bluer.

I arrived at the Venetian harbour at 6.30am to photograph the lighthouse at sunrise (7.10am), and it was a lovely sunrise and as Rethymno is such a lovely city, I opted to stay on and shoot the beach until mid-morning.

One of the things that I love about the beaches in popular tourists destinations abroad is that there is an awful lot to photograph, with so many different subjects on offer. I settled on this beach hut complete with the palm tree and just as I had set up, two chaps walked down and started getting out some cleaning equipment. I don't mind admitting that initially I was cursing them under my breath for getting in my shot but as the minutes rolled by, I saw them as a great opportunity to capture them in action.

I did not want the conventional shot of two guys washing down the hut so I opted to set the shutter speed to 20 seconds with a Kase 10 Stop ND filter attached and the effect was exactly what I was wanting. A creative image of the guys going about their business while being completely unrecognisable and I love the ghostly effect that the filter has allowed me to get.

What are your thoughts? Hit or miss? I would be interested to know.

As for Crete, I first visited the stunning island back in 1999 and returned in 2010 and again in 2019. There's a quality about the island that draws me back time after time and I seriously enjoy the scenery, the people, the harbour-lined cities that allow you to sit there with a coffee and watch the world go by.

Then there are the White Mountains that divide the north of the island from the south in the west of the island and at 8,000ft, they are covered in snow until late spring (hence the name) but wow, it is sure a spectacular drive.

Crete is a place that I might run a future workshop there, perhaps in April 2022.
