PANORAMA CITY - The Los Angeles Fire Department's Recruit Training Academy Class 22-2 celebrated their class graduation on December 15, 2022, as they became proud probationary members of the LAFD.
Friends and family of the graduates were joined by City of Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin Crowley and civic and community leaders, in congratulating and welcoming the 48 newest members of the Department in a ritual filled ceremony that was also streamed live on-line.

FIAT Nuova 500 Giardiniera :
L'étude d'une telle voiture était devenue indispensable pour Fiat , qui n'avait pas remplacer la 500 C Belvédère depuis 1955. Pourtant, nombreux furent les projets d'un véhicule utilitaire basé sur la fiat 600, mais son moteur 4 cylindres refroidi à eau mettait quelques obstacles à un seuil de chargement raisonnable.De plus, de la Fiat 600 dérivait déjà le Multipla à l'esthétique plus que discutable. Giacosa dû alors composé avec sa dernière née : la Fiat nuova 500.
La Giardiniera fut présentée au printemps 1960 et finira sa longue carrière en 1977 sous la marque Autobianchi.
Sur la même base que la Jardinière, Autobianchi produisait également une version plus raffinée : la Panoramica jusque 1970. Mis à part sa ligne dérivée des Bianchina, ses portes s'ouvrent dans le bon sens et sa porte arrière est un hayon qui s'ouvre de bas en haut à la différence de la Jardinière dont la porte arrière s'ouvre sur le côté.
Avant le lancement de la Jardinière, certains s'essayèrent à adapter la nuova 500 à un utilitaire ayant des meilleures capacités de chargement : quelques carrossiers, comme Francis Lombardi, tentèrent d'allonger une nuova 500 dans une configuration proche de celle de la future Jardinière. Néanmoins, ces derniers conservaient le moteur vertical de la nuova 500, ce qui ne permettait pas un bon seuil de chargement. (Francis Lombardi, modello "Utility", 1959).
Les ingénieurs de Fiat durent d'abord résoudre le probléme du moteur : le bi-cylindre de la 500 était bien trop haut : ils décidèrent de le tourner à 90° sur la droite en adaptant le plus possible de pièces du moteur de la 500 sur un nouveau bloc. Ainsi, l'allumage, la carburation et le refroidissement furent revus. L'allumage fut modifié et placé à côté de la distribution; un nouveau carburateur Weber 26 OC horizontale vint remplacer le weber 26 IMB de la berline. L'accés au moteur est possible grâce à une trappe placée sous le coffre. Pour le contrôle moteur, une petite ouverture placée sur la trappe permet de vérifier le niveau d'huile. Le refroidissement fut entièrement revu : la grille d'aspiration de la berline fut abandonnée. Giacosa imagina un système de circulation d'air frais prélevé grâce à une turbine coûplée à la dynamo. L'air est aspiré au travers de deux grilles latérales, passe dans la double coque de la voiture puis dans la jupe arrière et enfin arrive dans la turbine.
Le réservoir de la voiture fut d'abord plat et central puis carré sur la gauche et enfin de forme longitudinale dès 1965.

PALMS- Firefighters battled a Major Emergency structure fire in the Palms area early Saturday morning, that led to the death of 17 pet cats and sent one firefighter to the hospital.
A cell phone call to 9-1-1 from a passerby at 5:44 AM on September 17, 2022, brought the first of 124 members of the Los Angeles Fire Department to the 9000 block of West Venice Boulevard, where they discovered smoke showing from the central section of a 50' x 425' one-story row of fifteen commercial occupancies.
During the intense firefight that included both strategic defensive and well-coordinated offensive operations, firefighters forced entry into and searched the many businesses, including CatPlaceLA, a feline boarding facility, where nineteen cats were carried from the smoke charged premises by firefighters.
While two of the cats were safely resuscitated by firefighters and soon transported to emergency veterinary care, seventeen others were sadly beyond medical help and perished at the scene.
Though thick smoke charged the majority of the large building that featured a common attic, the bulk of direct fire damage was limited to five businesses, including a nail salon, smoke shop, martial arts studio, staffing agency, and the aforementioned pet boarding facility.
Collateral smoke, heat and water damage affected an adjacent jewelry store and a restaurant. None of the involved businesses were equipped with optional fire sprinklers.
One firefighter suffered sudden medical illness in the midst of the firefight, and was taken to an area hospital in fair condition for further medical evaluation. There were thankfully no civilian injuries.
The flames were fully extinguished in just 73 minutes. The cause of the fire remains under active investigation.

Expressing her pride in their accomplishments, City of Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin M. Crowley oversaw the formal promotion ceremony at the LAFD Frank Hotchkin Memorial Training Center in Elysian Park.
