• BT ArtBox project saw leading artists, designers and creatives transform full-size replicas of iconic Gilbert Scott–designed red telephone box into stunning artworks
• Throughout June and July 2012, BT ArtBoxes were on display in high-profile locations across the capital
• The National Portrait Gallery hosted a gala auction on July 18 where the ArtBoxes were auctioned to raise money for ChildLine
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of ChildLine, BT announced the launch of the BT ArtBox project – a new public art exhibition set to take over the capital Summer 2012.
Leading artists, designers and creatives from around the world were invited to apply their individual talents to re-style that much-loved icon of British design, the traditional red telephone box.
Each artist or designer took delivery of a full-size, fibre-glass replica of the Sir Giles Gilbert Scott-designed original K6 telephone kiosk, which was introduced in 1936 to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of the coronation of King George V.
Participating artists included 2002 Turner prize winner Keith Tyson, Romero Britto and Royal Academician Professor of Sculpture David Mach, along with fashion designers Giles Deacon and Zandra Rhodes.
The BT ArtBoxes were on display in high-profile locations around the capital between June 18 and July 16 before being auctioned off at a VIP Gala Auction at the National Portrait Gallery on July 18 to raise funds for BT’s long-time partner ChildLine.
Esther Rantzen OBE, founder of ChildLine and patron of the BT ArtBox project, said: “I’m thrilled that ChildLine’s 25th birthday is to be celebrated by such a unique and inspiring project as BT Artbox.
“The red phone box is a much loved symbol of British culture and I’m keen to see how the artists involved will create new masterpieces from such an iconic canvas. It’s fantastic that the proceeds from the sale of the boxes will raise vital funds to support the work of ChildLine, enabling us to help many more children and young people to get comfort, advice and protection when they need it most.”
Sandy Nairne, director of the National Portrait Gallery and patron of the BT ArtBox project, said: “The Gilbert Scott telephone box is a truly iconic British design, and I’m looking forwards to seeing how artists and designers transform the replica boxes into works of art on London’s streets.”
David Mach, said: “It’s great to be involved with the ArtBox Exhibition. I get to kill more than two birds with one stone...work with a great charity (hopefully make money for it) and a classic British design. I love all things Gilbert Scott. Anything that encourages us to get his design back on our streets does it for me”.

Top 10 facts about the K6 red phone box
1. Kiosk number 6 or “Jubilee Kiosk” commemorates the Silver Jubilee of the coronation of King George V.
2. Sir Giles Gilbert Scott also designed Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral, Battersea Power Station and Bankside Power Station now Tate Modern.
3. More than 1,600 decommissioned red phone boxes, mostly K6s, have been sold to local communities for just a £1 under BT’s Adopt a Kiosk scheme. Uses include being fitted with lifesaving defibrillation machines, turned into art galleries and public libraries.
4. The K6 was the first kiosk installed nationwide and the standard kiosk across the UK until the introduction of the K8 in 1968.
5. The K6 kiosk is made from cast iron with a teak door. It is 8’3” tall (2.4 metres) and weighs three quarters of a ton (762 kilograms).
6. The K6 design was approved by the Post Office and the Royal Fine Arts Commission, which endorsed “Post Office red” as the standard colour.
7. Although Scott agreed to the use of “Post Office red” he was never a supporter of the colour and initially suggested the outside of the kiosk be painted silver and the inside greenish-blue. He strongly urged rural kiosks be painted dove-grey.
8. Two K6 kiosks were installed in France during 1995, for the 50th anniversary of the D-Day landings.
9. Several red K6’s have been transformed into combined payphones and cash machines.
10.There are 11,000 red phone boxes in use in the UK.

[This is one of a set of 6 images on the church] Christ Episcopal Church is a simply designed rural, brick Gothic church, dating from 1844-45. Located in Norwood, Nelson County, Virginia, the church no longer serves that function, having closed in the mid-1990s. Some point later, a portion of the building was used as a U. S. Post Office for the community. Plans were underway (in 2010) to restore the church and open it as an arts center for the area. W. A. R., Godwin, the grandson of the first minister F. D. Godwin, was instrumental in persuading John D. Rockefeller to invest in the massive Colonial Williamsburg (Virginia) restoration. An historical marker in the churchyard honors W. A. R. Godwin. Two Gothic windows with frosted glass flank the Gothic wooden door in the front façade; above the door is a small 8-pane circular window. The slightly recessed windows don’t appear to be fixed and have 4/4 panes with the top two corresponding to the shape of the arch. The entrance is a wooden double-leaf of narrow diagonal slats. The façade has undergone some changes, evidenced by the “ghosts” of three windows. These were on the building from the beginning; they were replaced with the lancet doorway, the central upper circular window and the lancet windows on either die of the front entrance, The roof is metal with a small external chimney on the right side of the building; it appears as if oil may have eventually been used for heating, for a rusted oil tank is also on the right side. The pointed metal-roofed belfry is small; four louvered vent openings, also displaying the Gothic arch, are located in the base of the tower. A small cross tops the belfry. In the rear is a smaller section, much lower in height that the main portion of the church. The rear façade has a door and three stained glass windows, symmetrically placed. It became a contributing structure in the recently formed Norwood-Wingina Rural Historic District, which was added August 20, 2019 to the National Register of Historic Places with ID #100004305.

Blockade of work on Adani Southern Galilee basin rail line.
In Hot and humid conditions two gates were blockaded to stop preliminary work that has started on the Adani Southern Galilee Basin rail line.
Frontline Action on Coal blockade of Adani construction works. Audrey Cooke locked on by the neck with message in Chinese about preserving the earth and our heritage for future generations, against climate change and fossil fuels. Audrey is over 70, and is active in Melbourne against Adani and coal.
There were 13 people arrested for trespass. Greens MPs Jeremy Buckingham and Dawn Walker have trespass notices and were called to move on and did so. Five police cars were called to transport people to Clairemont police station. Photographer Julian Meehan has been issued an official move on order. 11 people are going to Claremont because they would not move.
A precious aboriginal painting form Uncle Ben has been taken and threatened with destruction. there is another group locked on at another gate.
Belyando, 6th December: Joined by NSW Parliamentarians Jeremy Buckingham and Dawn Walker, dozens of people have walked on to Adani’s rail construction site in Central Queensland, stopping work on the ill-fated mega coal mine. This morning’s action is part of a growing wave of disruption to stop the mine and comes just days after several of China’s largest banks including two of the world’s largest lenders to coal – ruled out funding for the project.
Some of the people have locked on to the entrance gates whilst a large group is occupying the work site, stopping work on the rail line.
“Although we are MPs from NSW, this is an issue of national and international significance. Adani represents a line in the sand for all those concerned about climate change who do not want to see a new coal precinct opened up in Australia. We stand with all those opposed to this crazy coal mine,” said Greens MP Jeremy Buckingham
“Although this mine is miles from anywhere, the eyes of all Australians are on it. We have travelled days to get here but believe me many more will follow. I’m appalled by the way this project is tearing indigenous communities apart and offering a sub standard agreement to Traditional Owners for their land, with little economic opportunity. On every level this operation doesn’t stack up,” said Greens MP Dawn Walker.
“I’m a law abiding citizen, mother and grandmother. The impacts of Adani’s mine are terrifying. The world is moving beyond coal. It’s ludicrous that a country as sunny and windy as Australia is even considering this ridiculous mine. It would be a terrible investment in a miserable future,” said retiree Audrey Cooke.
“This mine is doomed. Twenty seven of the world’s largest banks won’t touch it. The Queensland Government says it won’t fund it. And the community is overwhelmingly opposed to it. Adani is a fighting a losing battle and we’re here today to show that the community will stay for as long as it takes for Adani to walk away,” said Anandan Mcewen, one of the protestors.
“We know that thousands of people are prepared to join us here in Central Queensland. We won’t stand idly by and let Adani trash our climate, wreck our Reef, and run roughshod over Traditional Owner rights,” concluded Mr Mcewen.
Civil disobedience has been taking place in and around Adani’s work sites in Central Queensland since August with more actions planned over the coming weeks and mass mobilisations flagged for early next year.
