I had this vision to create an exhibition of childrens' self portraits, and it happened! It was based on a line from a Robert Burns poem "To see oursels as others see us". I had a loan of a table top etching press, a pile of little acrylic pieces and a bundle of handmade paper. I managed to get 297 children (aged 8-12) from 2 schools involved and persuaded 2 friends who have a photography studio to lend us the space for a week. Didn't they do well?

It is pertinent to mention here that the capital city of Lombok has a thriving weaving industry. You can find some bright, patterned songket cloths for which Lombok is famous. Each weaver family in Lombok has some generations of weaving expertise and today, everything is used by them, gold, silver, silks and cotton to create dazzling pieces of patterned poetry.

A big win for us at FlickrHQ. Thanks to Sean Taylor Chapman for flexin' some badass design skills.

Today, the preschool teachers were in their classrooms, cleaning things up. They vacuumed carpets, wiped down hard surfaces, ...and of course, cleaned toys, in anticipation of the students' arrival. I went into the kitchen and found this scene. Naked women and camo-clad men, heaped in a dish drainer. I suppose the unintentional symbolism is self-evident. As culture creates gender, we create it intentionally unequal . . .and dehumanizing. What we're teaching our children will last a lifetime. Day four for Project 365.

Hundreds of artists, activists, designers and friends of the arts came to kick off the wonderful AfterBurn exhibit in Petaluma. This special exhibition celebrates Burning Man and its roots in the North Bay, by featuring artists who create for and document this annual arts festival in Black Rock Desert.

AfterBurn is hosted by the Petaluma Arts Center and was masterfully curated by our art partner in crime, Freddy Hahne, also known as Dr. Really. They collected a wide range of artworks from the Playa, including our colorful Huracan art car, created by our own Mind Shaft Society, the Ovule by Zoe Fry & friends, giant teapots, musical trees, winged fairies and many more inspiring artifacts, all lined up in front of the smart train station and glimmering in the setting sun.

Many creative minds, dignitaries and old friends gathered for the opening reception on Nov. 23. We captured their smiling faces throughout this uplifting reunion -- including members of Pataphysical Studio, our art collective where surrealism meets the maker spirit. Some of the folks appearing in this photo album include: Loren & Rachel Carpenter, Dana Dworin, Vickisa Feinberg, Fabrice & Phyllis Florin, Janey Fritsche, Stephanie Levene, Joni Maxx, Sue Olivier, Tim Pozar, Howard & Judy Rheingold, Marshall Smith and Ed Zingaro, to name but a few.

We all had a wonderful time honoring Burning Man’s creative culture together. Dr. Really was on top of his game, gave a masterful performance and hosted a fabulous party. We’re very grateful to him and his crew for bringing so many of us together for this very special occasion. AfterBurn will remain open to the public though January 18, 2020, and I highly recommend this unique opportunity to experience Burning Man vicariously through this amazing art collection.

365/365 (12.31.2011)

“But, if you have nothing at all to create, then perhaps you create yourself.” ~ Carl Jung

What an extraordinary journey into self-discovery, creativity and seeing things in an entirely new way this 365 project has been. It has changed my life, for the better, in so many profound and wonderful ways. Heartfelt gratitude to all of you who have supported me on this journey - I'd never have made it without you.

Happy 365! Happy New Year 2012!

We taught a special robot class for adults and teens at Tam Makers, to show them how to create their own artistic robot. This 2-part evening course took took place in our makerspace at Tam High School in Mill Valley.

Our four students learned how to build their bots from scratch, then make them move in a different ways, using a programmable Arduino board. Each student received their own robot kit, which they learned to assemble and control. They first built a chassis, then wired up the electronics, assembled a remote control, then added a head and arms, with servo motors to make them move.

They then took their completed robots home with them, after the class ended. Now that their bots are assembled and operational, we hope they will learn how to program them and make them move in different ways. We have invited them to join our weekly Maker Club workshops on Thursdays, so we can coach them on how to keep improving their bots.

For this course, my partner Edward Janne and I created our own robot kit, using an Arduino Feather M0 for the robot, an RF remote, a custom chassis, plus three additional servos and more parts. Our robot kit is similar to commercial products, but with a lot more features, at a lower cost. It was a lot of work, but we’re very happy with the final results, and our students seemed to really enjoy the class. We hope this will encourage other teachers, students and makers to create their own animated characters, for art and technology’s sake.
