This is the Jefferson County Courthouse in downtown Charles Town, West Virginia. The abolitionist John Brown was tried here after his failed slave revolt in 1859; he was hung nearby after his conviction. This is perhaps the final spark that started the American Civil War. William Blizzard, the coal miner union leader, was tried and acquitted here in 1922. He led the miners on a strike that turned bloody after strike busters attacked the strikers. Charles Town was founded in 1786 by Charles Washington, the youngest brother of George Washington.

This is the 1896 County Courthouse in Denton, Texas. The camera is looking north-northwest. You can see the City Hall I mentioned earlier--with the red tile roof and bell tower. Note the "IOOF" sign at the extreme right. As I've mentioned elsewhere, this stands for Independent Order of Odd Fellows. It is a benevolent fraternal order I believe Calhoun Middle School is visible on the left hand border..

Tombstone Courthouse State Historic Park is a state park of Arizona in the United States. Located in Tombstone, the park preserves the original Cochise County courthouse.

The two-story building, constructed in 1882 in the Victorian style, is laid out in the shape of a cross and once contained various county offices, including those of the sheriff, recorder, treasurer, and the Board of Supervisors as well as courtrooms and a jail.

Inside, the courthouse contains a museum with numerous artifacts from the town's history while outside, a replica gallows has been constructed in the courtyard to mark the spot where seven men were hanged for various crimes. The park was one of the first to be designated as a state park and in 1959 was the first to open following the 1957 establishment of the Arizona State Parks Board.

Postville Courthouse is a reproduction of Logan County’s first seat of government. Constructed in 1840, the original building until 1848 was one of the courts in which Abraham Lincoln argued cases while traveling the historic Eighth Judicial Circuit. Long after being converted to residential use, the original courthouse was purchased by Henry Ford and in 1929 moved to his Dearborn, Michigan, Greenfield Village museum. This replica was constructed in 1953 on the original site as part of the city of Lincoln’s centennial celebration.

The two-story frame Courthouse sits near the center of a landscaped city block. The first floor has a reception and orientation room and an exhibit gallery. On the second floor are rooms representing an 1840s courtroom and a county office.

Built in 1882, the Parke County Courthouse is part of the Rockville National Historic District which includes an impressive 210 buildings. The architect of this gorgeous building was Thomas J. Tolan. The District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. One of eight historic courthouses that I found on last October's covered bridge road trip.

The Wayne County Courthouse in Wayne, Nebraska, is a Richardsonian Romanesque-style historic courthouse that was built in 1899. It is a 70-by-80-foot building located in the center of a 4-acre square amidst, somewhat unexpectedly, a residential neighborhood. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Its cornerstone indicates that it was designed by Minneapolis architects Orff & Guilbert, but it seems to have been wholly designed by Fremont D. Orff (1856–1914) alone, and it was built by Omaha contractors Rowles & Moore.

This image of Courthouse Butte was taken from the side of Bell Rock. As I approached Bell Rock - It is shaped like a bell - I could here a flute. Eventually I noticed a man on a ledge, high up on Bell Rock who was playing a flute. It was a large wooden flute, typical of this area, and he was playing a haunting, melodious melody. During my week stay in Sedona, I often heard and/or saw this type of instrument being played. Beautiful sound.

I arrived at the spot from which I took this photo and I just laird on the rock. Temperatures were mild, no wind, lots of sunshine and the only sound was that of the flute. A magical moment.

Hamilton County Courthouse

101 East Main (SH 281), Hamilton, TX 76531

"Our restored historic Hamilton County Courthouse is an economic revitalization spark to our downtown. The ‘working courthouse’ serves as the center of our county governmental activities and has historically been the social center of this rural community. It is and will continue to be the source of pride to young and old alike, as well as an important landmark to visitors."

—Debbie Rudolph, Hamilton County Clerk

Architectural Description

The Hamilton County Courthouse, originally built in 1887, was transformed by efforts to modernize and expand the building in 1932. It embodies eclectic elements of style from the Richardsonian Romanesque (crenellated square turrets, round arch windows), the Neoclassical (pedimented porticoes supported by classical fluted columns), and the Spanish Revival style (mission-inspired tower). The limestone masonry is said to have been quarried locally, including the expertly-crafted rustication and hand-scribed corner quoins. Most charming of all are the cast stone medallions over each of the four secondary entries depicting frontier icons, such as a cowboy, sheep, and a shorthorn cow.

The 1932 interior corridors feature linoleum flooring and formica wainscoting, as shown in the original construction drawings. The twin stairs to the second floor surround an expansive, double-height district courtroom. Curved oak veneer wainscot and schoolhouse pendant light fixtures adorn the space, capped by a flat barrel-vaulted ceiling. An elliptical concrete bench circles the courthouse, predating the 1932 remodel.

It's a great building and it's of course on the National Register of Historical Buidings

Built in 1908 in the Beaux Arts style, the Brown County Courthouse faces east and is a three story buff colored brick and stone structure. The building is constructed of Marquette raindrop stone with Bedford limestone superstructure and a gray colored granite base. On the center of the roof is a copper covered dome and clock tower containing an original Seth Thomas clock. The building was designed by architect Charles E Bell who also designed many courthouses in the United States and also the State Capitols of Montana and South Dakota.
