A beautiful rainy Oregon afternoon between the Max Greenline 5th Ave. stop and Pioneer Courthouse in lovely downtown PDX.
This is the Bartow County Courthouse in Cartersville, Georgia. "The Bartow County Courthouse, built in 1902, is an historic redbrick Classical Revival style county courthouse located on Courthouse Square in Cartersville, Bartow County, Georgia, United States.
Designed by the Louisville, Kentucky architectural firm of Kenneth McDonald & Co. together with self-taught Georgia architect J. W. Golucke, who is said to have designed 27 courthouses in Georgia and four in Alabama, it is Bartow County's third courthouse and the second one built in Cartersville. The first courthouse built in Cassville, while the county was known as Cass County, was burned by General Sherman's troops in 1864. In 1867 the county seat was moved to Cartersville and the second courthouse was built in 1873. It proved to be unsatisfactory because court proceedings had to be halted while trains passed by on the nearby railroad. In 1992 a courthouse annex known as the Frank Moore Administration and Judicial Center was completed.
While the 1902 building is still used for some court purposes, most of the proceedings are held in the 1992 building." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bartow_County_Courthouse.
A local landmark: The Loudoun County Courthouse was erected in 1895. It rises on four columns, has double doors, and is capped by a clock and bell housed in a belfry. In front of the courthouse stands a statue of a Confederate soldier. It was designed by F.S. Sievers, and dedicated to the courthouse in 1908. It serves as a memorial to the many Rebel soldiers who died fighting for the cause in which they believed.
The second of three historic courthouses I saw on my recent trip to SW Iowa; this one is located in beautiful Red Oak. This beauty is much grander than the one in my previous post. Built in 1891, this courthouse was also added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981 as part of the County Courthouses in Iowa Thematic Resource.
This is the Hancock County Courthouse in January 2013. Except for the external walls, the courthouse was destroyed by fire in 2014.
This courthouse has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places - Roswell, New Mexico. Roswell became the Chaves County seat in 1889. The current courthouse was built in 1911.
This is the Jefferson County Courthouse in downtown Charles Town, West Virginia. The abolitionist John Brown was tried here after his failed slave revolt in 1859; he was hung nearby after his conviction. This is perhaps the final spark that started the American Civil War. William Blizzard, the coal miner union leader, was tried and acquitted here in 1922. He led the miners on a strike that turned bloody after strike busters attacked the strikers. Charles Town was founded in 1786 by Charles Washington, the youngest brother of George Washington.
Pioneer Courthouse in Portland, Oregon was built in phases between 1869 and 1903. It is the oldest federal building in the Pacific Northwest and is still used as a federal courthouse. It is a National Historic Landmark.

One of my ant's eye views of the corner entrance to the Santa Barbara County Courthouse.
This is the 1896 County Courthouse in Denton, Texas. The camera is looking north-northwest. You can see the City Hall I mentioned earlier--with the red tile roof and bell tower. Note the "IOOF" sign at the extreme right. As I've mentioned elsewhere, this stands for Independent Order of Odd Fellows. It is a benevolent fraternal order I believe Calhoun Middle School is visible on the left hand border..

The Webster County Courthouse in Fort Dodge, Iowa was built in 1902. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Coweta County Courthouse in downtown Newnan, Georgia. Coweta County is proud to display the 1904 Neoclassical Revival architecture of our historic courthouse. The structure reflects the Italian influence of architect Andrea Palladro in its central crossing plan and English architect Christopher Wrenn in its symmetrical classicism. Traditionally, cornices and pediments of stone were used, but stamped and formed copper were used, as well.
The most interesting feature is the dome, reminiscent of the famed Gibbs Radcliff Library. Rising more than 100 feet above the court square, it features clocks on all four sides. The dome is covered with copper to match the cornice, pediment and railings.
The architect was James Golucke, the son of a German immigrant who settled in Georgia. The courtroom is used by the Probate Court during the week.
Built in 1882, the Parke County Courthouse is part of the Rockville National Historic District which includes an impressive 210 buildings. The architect of this gorgeous building was Thomas J. Tolan. The District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. One of eight historic courthouses that I found on last October's covered bridge road trip.
Tombstone Courthouse State Historic Park is a state park of Arizona in the United States. Located in Tombstone, the park preserves the original Cochise County courthouse.
The two-story building, constructed in 1882 in the Victorian style, is laid out in the shape of a cross and once contained various county offices, including those of the sheriff, recorder, treasurer, and the Board of Supervisors as well as courtrooms and a jail.
Inside, the courthouse contains a museum with numerous artifacts from the town's history while outside, a replica gallows has been constructed in the courtyard to mark the spot where seven men were hanged for various crimes. The park was one of the first to be designated as a state park and in 1959 was the first to open following the 1957 establishment of the Arizona State Parks Board.
The next photo in my ghost town series was taken in 1995 and scanned from a slide. This is the Nye County courthouse in Belmont, Nevada. It was built in 1876 and closed in 1905 when the county seat was moved to Tonapah. Belmont was a silver mining town starting in 1865 but the mines played out and most people were gone by 1890. There are two big ruined mills here and numerous other ruins as well as several picturesque intact buildings including an active saloon. Belmont is a long way from anywhere else, but well worth the trip for photographers.
Rosebud County Courthouse in Forsyth, Montana was built in 1913. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
This is said to be the second most photographed building in all of Missouri.
The original courthouse in Carthage MO was burned down during the civil war. And to replace it they build this grand Richardsonian Romanesque style ecourthouse. It's still in use today.
And so anyhow when the clouds overhead looked dramatic I knew I had a nice setup for a blue hour photo.
Butler County Courthouse in Greenville, Alabama was built in 1904 in the Romaneque Revival style. The building faces west and is a two story red colored brick, stone and concrete structure. The building is located on the landscaped grounds of Courthouse Square in the center of Greenville. The west front has a portico on the first story supported by six columns. The front of the first story is faced with stone. Above the entrance rises a five story clock tower having a balcony around the fifth story and a red dome at the top.
