The Sully County Courthouse was added to the National Register in April 2001. Photographs from SHPO site visit in 2021.
The Sully County Courthouse is located in the city of Onida and is not the original building for the courthouse. The current building was constructed in 1912 after the original building began to be overcrowded. The courthouse is a three-story stone building that boasts a Neo-Classic style of architecture. One of the building's most significant features in this style is it's full height porch supported by classical columns with symmetrically balanced openings. This type of architecture was popular in public buildings throughout the United States between around 1880 and 1920 and was used frequently for South Dakota courthouses built during that era. The interior of the building retains a high level of integrity to the original building. Including a vast array of original paintings and murals. Two large easel paintings reside in the building which were painted by F.C. Van Stone in 1911 specifically for the courthouse.
The courthouse is a local reminder of the importance of county government being the most important single physical element in the government of Sully county. Sully county was settled in 1883 and choosing the county seat began almost immediately. Originally the location was given to Clifton, but after a new vote, Onida won the election by nine votes.
On the right you can see a 1994 addition to the courthouse. While it's not great the addition does emulate the lines of the original, plus it has about the same height and slope to the roof. So it is a much better attempt at an addition than an earlier one on the other side.
Marianna, Arkansas
In 1936 the current front section was attached to the front of the previous 1890 county courthouse. The older courthouse was removed in 1965 when the one story red brick addition was constructed. The courthouse is listed on the NRHP.
Pike county courthouse, Bowling Green MO. The county’s sixth courthouse was designed by Henry H. Hohenschild in the Classic Revival style. The 85 foot square building utilized Bedford stone and gray Georgia granite. The first courthouse(1820-1824) was a two story small brick structure, the first brick building in Pike county. This courthouse was in Louisiana. The county seat was moved to Bowling Green and the second courthouse (1823-1831) was built – a temporary log structure. The third courthouse(1829-1844) was a brick building built off the square. The fourth courthouse (1844-1864) was a two story brick structure with a balcony measuring 44x50 feet. Fire destroyed this building in 1864. The fifth courthouse (1865-1915) was designed by George I. Barnett and A. H. Piquenard. It was destroyed by fire in 1915.
The Giles County Courthouse was build in 1836 and stands on the court house square in Pearisburg, Virginia. The courthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.
When Mono County was formed in 1861, Aurora, then a booming mining town some 20 miles to the east, was made county seat. But in 1863 the state line was resurveyed and Aurora turned out to be three miles into Nevada. Bodie and Benton vied for county seat and were disgusted when the honor went to the farming town of Bridgeport. A Benton newspaper scornfully suggested the county buildings at Bridgeport could better serve as "possible corncribs" and indeed the original courthouse was a far cry from the 1880 structure...
Meriwether County was formed in 1827 and named for David Meriwether who served in the Revolutionary War and served as an interpreter for the Creek Indians who were native to the area. The original courthouse was built in 1832 in the current courthouse square and served the county until 1893 when it was destroyed by a tornado. The current courthouse was built in 1904 and it stood until 1976 when fire gutted the structure. The outer structure remains largely the same but after the fire the interior was completely renovated. The courthouse reopened in 1980 and is still serving as the seat of Meriwether County.

"The Common Road of the English Following Old Indian Trail"
"The colonial road from Charleston to Vicksburg followed the highway at this point. The route, used by Col. Langdon Welch on his expedition to Mississippi in 1698, was thereafter followed by British traders. Through Taliaferro Co., it followed the present route, Raytown to Crawfordville to Union Point, then Ogeechee Rover Old Town. Wm. Bartram, celebrated traveler, crossed here in 1773 with the party, headed by Col. Barnett, which surveyed 2,000,000 acres of land ceded by the Creek and Cherokees to the Colony of Georgia. Lafayette followed this road on his American tour in 1825."

Searcy, Arkansas
The Classical style courthouse was constructed in 1870 with additions in 1912. It is the oldest functioning courthouse in Arkansas and is listed on the NRHP.
Crumlin Road Courthouse was constructed in 1850 and has been a landmark in Belfast ever since. Situated opposite the Gaol (1845), a tunnel connected the court to the prison where inmates would often serve their sentences, bringing a real truth to the expression 'take them down.' Abandoned in 1998 and reputedly sold in 2003 for the cost of £1, the stunning court house building never saw redevelopment and is all but a shell having been gutted by fire several times.
I visited in 2008 when most of these photographs were taken and before major fire damage. Almost no efforts had been made to secure the site and as such vandalism and weather damage was rife.
