This is one of the nesting pair I have been watching all spring. I never had the lens strength to get a good shot at the nest, today it was kind enough to take a rest in a snag right where I was standing. The mate made several passes and they both vocalized. Later one had a Trout and was flying South towards the nest

A first test build of this compact United Counties depot. This is a complete model of the building; front and back.
The rounded ended 'control room' building is reminiscent of similar features incorporated in several LT country area garages.
Known locally as the "big stone" this large boulder is a glacial erratic. Overlooking Warrenpoint and Rostrevor and Carlingford Lough.
Many have commented on my photos of small Texas towns and those comments are sincerely appreciated. I have a love for rural and small town Texas because that is where my roots are, going back many generations. This particular series is special to me, however. My mother would have turned 100 this month and I visited Thornton, Texas, her home town, during the summer to take this series of photographs. The place holds many memories for me from my trips there to visit my grandmother and aunts and uncles while growing up. Sadly, many of the old buildings that I remember so well are gone, including Fisher Hardware (that was nothing like the modern big box hardware stores) and Black’s Drug Store, with its “old fashioned” soda fountain. My grandmother’s house is gone, too, destroyed in a fire several years ago. My visit to the local cemetery was very poignant, as well. My mom and dad are buried in Houston but Mom’s parents and all of her siblings and their spouses are buried in Thornton.
Thornton is located on State Highway 14 in Limestone County. Settlement began in 1868. In 1870, the Houston and Texas Central Railway ran a line through the area from Hearne to Groesbeck. The community became a railroad stop and was named for John E. Thornton, an early resident. (The story of how my grandfather, mayor of Thornton in the 1930’s and early 1940’s, convinced the railroad company not to discontinue using Thornton as a railroad stop, which would have ended their passenger service, is a family legend.)
A post office was established in 1873 and, soon thereafter, cotton gins were set up nearby. Ceramics manufacturing also took place in Thornton, though agriculture was the mainstay of the area. Thornton Institute, an early college, was established in 1877 but later became Thornton School. The Thornton Masonic lodge No. 486 was chartered in 1878 and other organizations followed.
By 1880 Thornton had a population of 200, thirteen businesses, and three churches. Within ten years, the population had more than doubled and Thornton had steam gristmills and a local newspaper. In 1904, the population was 586 and, after unsuccessful attempts, the town was incorporated in 1907.
During this period of time the population grew, reaching 678 between 1910 and 1920, and business continued to expand. In addition to the cotton gins, schools, churches, and steam gristmills, the town soon had eighteen brick stores (mostly gone now), a bank, a commission house, a hotel, and electric lights. In 1918, the first airplane landed in Thornton, piloted in from Houston. By 1926 Thornton had 733 residents, a deep water well, and telephone connections. The population peaked at nearly 2,000 in the late 1920’s and then began a decline. Between 1969 and 1989 Thornton had a population between 408 and 498, and the number of businesses was five. The population currently remains at approximately 500 (as of the 2000 census).

The Mexican government issued a land grant to the first Anglo-American settler in the county, Thomas G. McGhee of Tennessee in 1835.
On March 1, 1848, the legislature formed Hays County from Travis County. The county is named for Tennessee transplant, Captain John Coffee Hays of the Texas Rangers, and Mexican–American War officer.
