Replaced a late 90's International Carpenter 3800, 52 passenger handy.
In Wigan town centre, construction began on the County Playhouse in 1916 (which date can be seen on the building’s white-tiled frontage). However, due to a shortage of materials and labour during World War I, it was not completed until 1919.
The cinema opened on 22nd December 1919 with “The Peril Within”, starring Dorothy Gish. The first ‘talkie’ was the highly acclaimed “Broadway Melody of 1929” with Bessie Love and Charles King, which opened on 16th September 1929.
A 2Manual Christie organ was opened by H. Ward on 24th December 1930. The cinema became host to many distinguished organists over the years.
In 1936, to assist the hard of hearing, ear-phones were provided so patrons could hear the soundtrack via the specially adapted Ardente system.
In 1938 an early experiment with 3D was tried with a short novelty film produced by Pete Smith called “Audioscopik”.
Despite the presence of the organ, in 1940 the manager, Thomas Moran, introduced musical interludes of 30 minutes of recorded music twice a week before the films were shown. These were advertised as ‘Programmes of Good Music’, with records provided by the Wigan Recorded Music Society. Mr Moran had hoped to introduce wartime patrons to the classical orchestras and soloists then appearing in Manchester and Liverpool, but this was short-lived, and the music was again left in the capable hands of the resident organist.
A major fire in 1949 almost destroyed the County Playhouse, but owners Eagle Picturedromes carried out a complete refurbishment in record time. Further alterations in 1954 prepared the cinema for the wide-screen era, with the VistaVision production “Three Ring Circus” starring Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, opening on 14th February 1955.
The County Playhouse closed on Sunday 13th November 1966 with Disney’s “The Sword and the Stone”. It was taken over by the Leeds Based Star Cinemas chain and they converted it into Star Bingo and Social Club opened on 24th November 1966.
The building has since been used as a discount store and Playhouse Club Café. In more recent times it has been home to the 1,200 capacity Pure Nightclub.

The Little Red Schoolhouse

Longwoods Elementary School, better known as the Little Red Schoolhouse, was one of 43 one-room schoolhouses being used in Talbot County in 1865. The average enrollment at the school was approximately 30 students and it is located near Wye Mills. For a brief time the school was known as Germantown Consolidated School (c. 1860), but the records indicate that Longwoods Elementary School was used most often.
The little school was used until 1967, with some updates to its rustic beginnings. When the school was first established, there was a single potbellied stove in the center of the school. The teacher was responsible for cleaning and lighting the stove to provide heat for her students. On either side of the stove were rows of desks. The younger students and the girls sat closer to the front and the older boys sat in the back. The students in grades 1 through 7 were taught the basics - reading, writing and arithmetic. They also learned a little history and geography. The students provided their own lunch that they carried to school with them in pails or baskets. They usually ate at their desks, or outside if the weather was nice. There were two outhouses on opposite sides of the schoolyard ... one for boys and one for girls. Light was provided by candles and natural sunlight through the windows.
Since paper was an expensive and rare item, it was only used for special reports that were usually completed at home. For the most part, children used slates to write on. Slates are small, hand-held chalkboards that were wiped off with a piece of cloth once their work was completed and checked by the teacher. The reading material came from McGuffy Readers and the Bible.
As the years progressed, the school eventually added modern conveniences. Electricity for lighting was added in 1936, and the outhouses were replaced with indoor facilities in 1951. In 1944 a new teacher was brought in. Her name was Ruth Stewart Orrell and she saw to it that her students mastered the updated curriculum. By this time the students now only attended the school until the end of their 5th grade year. The last class to complete their education at the Little Red Schoolhouse was in 1967.
In 1969, the members of the Talbot County Historical Society, and others who wanted to maintain a piece of Talbot County History, worked to restore Longwoods Elementary School to its original condition. They removed the indoor plumbing and erected two outhouses. They also removed the electric lights and other modern conveniences. The electric outlets were left intact, but carefully concealed to remain true to its historic beginnings. The Little Red Schoolhouse was honored by officials at a Dedication Ceremony on June 18, 1972 and can now be toured with special permission.

Unfortunately I didn't make a note of what road this house is on. Anyone recognize it? I know I had just left Logan, Ohio and was working my way south toward the Moonville Tunnel.

This Richardsonian Romanesque style house was designed by the architectural firm of Wing & Mahurin in 1893 for Robert Bell, an attorney and state senator. Contrasting smooth and rock-faced stone masonry on the exterior create a striking effect. Other features include an open loggia above an entry porch with large Syrian arches. On the west side of the house is a matching addition designed by architect A.M. Strauss in 1935.

Deer Lodge, MT (Powell County)
Too many to list, but too much to miss, is a visit to the car museum in the Old Prison Museum Complex. Over 160 cars are on display from classic Chevys and muscle cars to a Schacht high wheeler. Listed by USA Today as one of the Top 10 Car Museums in the country, the Montana Auto Museum offers a splendid display of automotive history. (1)
