The Greensboro Sit-Ins were non-violent protests in Greensboro, North Carolina, which lasted from February 1, 1960 to July 25, 1960. The protests led to the Woolworth Department Store chain ending its policy of racial segregation in its stores in the southern United States.

I am sitting in the morning

At the diner on the corner

I am waiting at the counter

For the man to pour the coffee

And he fills it only halfway

And before I even argue

He is looking out the window

At somebody coming in

"It is always nice to see you"

Says the man behind the counter

To the woman who has come in

She is shaking her umbrella

And I look the other way

As they are kissing their hellos

I'm pretending not to see them

And instead I pour the milk

I open up the paper

There's a story of an actor

Who had died while he was drinking

It was no one I had heard of

And I'm turning to the horoscope

And looking for the funnies

When I'm feeling someone watching me

And so I raise my head

There's a woman on the outside

Looking inside

Does she see me?

No she does not really see me

'Cause she sees her own reflection

And I'm trying not to notice

That she's hitching up her skirt

And while she's straightening her stockings

Her hair has gotten wet

Oh, this rain it will continue

Through the morning as I'm listening

To the bells of the cathedral

I am thinking of your voice...

And of the midnight picnic

Once upon a time

Before the rain began...

I finish up my coffee

It's time to catch the train

We went down the street and into the shop. It looked like a grocery store, only a lot smaller. Shelving at about shoulder level stood in rows along the store. Again, I pulled out my Geiger counter and checked the levels; still low enough to hang around for a while. I started going down one of the aisles. It’s no surprise they were all picked dry. All most of the shelves had were some ripped up packaging or open cans with who-knows-what coated in mould spilling out. I got the idea to check under the shelving. Yes! A can was kept tucked away out of sight. I reached under and pulled it out. It’s sealed and intact so it better be edible, glad it was one of those kinds that didn't need a can opener. The label was burnt off, so I couldn't tell what it was. I cracked it open; some kind of pasta it looked like. I turned around, leaned my rifle up, sat on the floor against the shelf and pulled my mask down around my neck before tipping the can up into my mouth. I finished taking a gulp of the pasta; I was able to hold it down so it was good.

Cristy - “Look…”

I looked over to Cristy, standing in the middle of the aisle holding her hands in front of her.

Cristy - “…I just want to say I’m-…I’m really sorry for how I was before. It’s just, uh-, b-being out here for so long; I can’t trust people that easily, y’know?”

I looked away and stared off from her as I nod.

Phin - “I hear you.”

I glanced back over to her.

Phin - “Hey, I’d probably do the same thing in your position.”

I tipped the can back up and took another few gulps.

Cristy - “But…With what happened this morning…I mean…you had no reason to come back for me, I was a jerk to you the whole time. You could have just ran for it and saved yourself.”

I lowered the can again and looked at her.

Phin - “Well…heh, I don’t really know actually. You hadn't killed me yet, and those guys back there were ready and willing to kill us both. I didn't even think about leaving you behind because-…I don’t know why. It just wouldn't have seemed right. It was just a…gut feeling, I guess. ”

Cristy - “Well, um…thank you.”

I gave a faint smile and nodded.

Phin - “You’re welcome.”

Cristy - “How about we just...start over. Is that okay?”

I chuckle a little.

Phin - “I think I'd like that.”

I lift myself up and tried to face her a little more.

Phin - “ 'Name's Phineas Harris, I go by Phin for short.”

Cristy - “Cristy Benoit,”

She stuck a hand out to me. I looked at it before taking it with my own and shaking it.

Cristy - “- nice to meet you.”

I snickered a little again. I guess this is what her good side looks like, its good we're finally getting some trust between us. I got back up and finished what was left in the can before placing it on the shelf.

Phin - “Okay, you ready to go?”

Cristy - “Ready when you are.”

I pulled my respirator back over my mouth and bent down to grab my rifle.

Phin - “Alright, let’s get moving.”

A work counter in a San Francisco restaurant

In early December we took a couple of days off and stayed in San Francisco. Usually we would simply drive there and back or take the train, but we had concerts to attend on two nights in a row and the thought of doing that drive up (in rush hour traffic) and back (at around midnight) twice in a row was enough to persuade us to simply find a place to stay. Of course this meant we had a lot more time to wander around the City with cameras and to more opportunities to grab a meal at some new place. This restaurant is very close to a location where we frequently attend concerts, but it was the first time we tried it. It is a casual place, but that was just right this time.

Typically one might not want to be this close to the food preparation areas (and the entrance to the kitchen) but in a tiny place like this that cannot be avoided. Plus it gave this photographer an opportunity to photograph things that are more interesting — to me anyway! — than the people sitting at nearby tables. (And less likely to get me kicked out than if I had started photographing other diners!) The photograph is also a reminder of how good — and even fun — it can be to always have a small camera along, even when your primary goal isn't photography.
