Cosmos sulphureus (Yellow Cosmos)
Cosmos belongs to that vast family of plants known as Asteraceae. Although there are 20 known species of cosmos, two annual species, Cosmos sulphureus and Cosmos bipinnatus, are most familiar to home gardeners. The leaves of C. sulphureus are long, with narrow lobes and hairy margins. The flower colors of this species are always shades of yellow, orange or red.
The evenly placed petals led them to christen the flower "Cosmos," the Greek word for harmony or ordered universe. Cosmos, like many of our warm weather annuals such as marigolds, originated in Mexico and South America.

The orange cosmos is becoming increasingly popular for its ease of growth, spectacular flowers and attractiveness to butterflies. Orange cosmos has rich green feathery foliage that is coarser than that of the common cosmos (Cosmos bipinnatus) but is just as pretty. Depending on variety and conditions, yellow cosmos will grow anywhere from 1 to 7 ft in height. Loại Cúc này dễ tính, dễ trồng. Nảy mầm nhanh, lên tốt, cây khỏe, hoa nhiều, màu vui vẻ…
Như trồng Cúc Chuồn, có 4 cây thôi mà nở ra vàng ruộm một góc hẻm, dễ có đến mấy trăm hoa nở cùng lúc. Ai đi ngang cũng nói chưa từng thấy cây Cúc Chuồn nào cao to nhiều hoa như vậy. Có lẽ do Như quên bấm ngọn nên bạn ấy cao gần 2 mét. Như không nói điều đó, chỉ nói tại trồng ở ngoài đường mà xóm này thì lại có nhiều… chó. Hihi…
Một đóa cúc không chỉ là một hoa cúc. Ta thấy một đóa cúc, thực ra trong đó có rất rất nhiều hoa cúc. Ví dụ loại Cúc Chuồn này, 8 cánh mà ta nhìn thấy là 8 hoa, còn vòng bên trong là thêm mấy chục hoa nữa.
Cúc Chuồn đi ngủ về chiều tối. Khi còn là cái nụ nhỏ thì không biết ngủ. Nụ Cúc sắp nở cũng biết ngủ. Ngày đầu tiên 8 hoa ngoài nở ra, cánh Cúc Chuồn vẫn còn nếp gấp. Chiều tà, Cúc Chuồn khẽ khép cánh, cúi đầu đi ngủ. Sáng mai cánh ngoài lại xòe ra, vòng hoa bên trong nở ra. Chiều tà lại đi ngủ. Ngày kế tiếp nở ra, vòng hoa trong cùng nở xòe…
Mà cũng lạ, cái cọng hoa Cúc ấy, to như chân nhang và cứng cáp lắm chứ có mềm dẻo, ẻo lả gì đâu, nhưng thích ngủ là cứ cong người, khép mắt mà ngủ thôi.
Cúc Chuồn được 3-4 ngày thì tàn, đậu một nắm hạt nâu đen, mỗi hạt vểnh hai cái râu. Đem đi gieo, lại được hàng nghìn đóa Cúc.
