Common name: Orange cosmos, Yellow cosmos
Botanical name: Cosmos sulphureus Family: Asteraceae (Sunflower family)
Orange cosmos has rich green feathery foliage that is coarser than that of the common cosmos (Cosmos bipinnatus) but is just as pretty. Depending on variety and conditions, yellow cosmos will grow anywhere from 1 to 7 ft in height. Whatever the height, each plant will produce quantities of solitary, bowl-shaped yellow to orange flowers that are 2-3 in (in diameter. 'Bright Lights' is a popular collection of single and double selections in colors that range from bright canary yellow to orange to a beautiful dark mahogany. Cosmos sulphureous is native to Mexico .

This was supposed to be, exclusively, and herb garden bed. Whoops. There are a handful of chives, parsley, cilantro, and thyme in there, and we can eat the nasturtiums as well.
The rest became a mix of zinnias and dye plants (two varieties of Coreopsis tinctoria, and Cosmos sulphureus). The zinnias could go in the dyepot too, but I prefer them in bouquets!

Same "harvest" still in front of my Condo. They do last long. Always with a beautiful color. Here too using my pancake lens. I liked the colors.
Cosmos, mirasol amarillo, como se llame, dura muchísimo tiempo las flores, aquí por las calles de San Salvador.
Usando a pancake, esta cosmos segue já por mais de 2 meses florescendo e parece não ter fim. Ainda bem. Dá um toque de classe à toda a rua.
This species of Cosmos is considered a half-hardy annual, although plants may re-appear via self-sowing for several years. Its foliage is opposite and pinnately divided. The plant height varies from one to seven feet. The original and its cultivars appear in shades of yellow, orange, and red. It is especially popular in Korea and Japan, where it is often seen in mass plantings along roadsides.

Spanish priests grew cosmos in their mission gardens in Mexico. The evenly placed petals led them to christen the flower "Cosmos," the Greek word for harmony or ordered universe. Cosmos, like many of our warm weather annuals such as marigolds, originated in Mexico and South America.
Cosmos sulphureus (Yellow Cosmos) - the species native to the Americas - is my favorite and the one I recommend you try if you have never grown cosmos.. Plants of yellow cosmos can range in height from 4 to 7 feet but the cultivated varieties such as 'Crest Red', 'Ladybird Dwarf Red', 'Ladybird Dwarf Gold', 'Ladybird Dwarf Orange', 'Ladybird Dwarf Lemon', and Yellow Cosmos - Klondyke Mix are not as tall. The flower heads are composed of disc and ray flowers. The disc, or center flowers are yellow: the ray, or outer petals range from pale yellow or mustard to orange-scarlet. Red is a relatively recent addition to the color range of C. sulphureus. The native species is golden-yellow to orange.
