The cooker attached to the Kang bed we slept in. A huge metal pan sits

over a coal fire. The pan is used for cooking and boiling water. The

smoke from the fire runs under the bed, heating stones (which retain the

heat for 8+ hours), then goes up out through a chimney.

You only have to look at the fortifiations around the upper access port to get an idea of the kinds of pressures these tanks were designed to produce and withstand. I can imagine the inside of a sealed tank being almost pristine, even after 80 years.
