Putting Cool Back Into The Van Pool...

Van Pool...So Cool!

Who Knew the van pool could be so cool?

Incredibly, this 1967 Beetle convertible wasn't among the show cars. It was parked to the side of the field of the swim club where the All Aircooled Gathering is held every third Sunday of September. I don't see why it wasn't. It could have easily won an award just for its tastefully done whitewall tires and chrome accents alone.

Well, maybe a couple of points would have been taken off for that yellow table tennis ball on the radio antenna. . . . ;-)

Brace yourselves, gentlemen : )

If Avanti really wanted to pull off this retro-coachbuilt body on donor platform, they should have gone with something smaller, so that at least wouldn't look as bloated. The original Avantis, after all, were pretty small coupes, if anyone remembers. This, I believe, is riding on rather large Mustang chassis.

The whole concept of a coachbuilt body on a large, yet cheap, sportscar chassis I think is past its prime, presuming there was ever a business case for it to exist in the first place, which is evidenced by the number of times that the Avanti company changed hands. Right now, even at the beginning of the decade, it would have made relative sense to base a coachbuilt body on a very small donor chassis, Focus-sized, so the car would be about the size (and attract roughly the same market) as the Nissan Figaro.

This 1949 Mercury convertible was photographed at the Floyd Garrett Muscle Car Museum in Sevierville, TN in July 2000.

This ASC car likely started out life with a red Biarritz interior. At some point someone changed out the red seats with white ones from a lower model. Note that seat belts were not color-contrasting on white interior cars in 1984. Not to mention the red door panels, quarters and visors.

The lovely Lake St. Clair in the background.

Brand new 2022 Case A recolour of the Matchbox 2019 VW Beetle Convertible, simple but glossy paint finish with full front and rear detailing plus much more attractive chrome disc wheels. A winning recipe which explains why I bought several of them from Tesco recently. Mint and boxed.

This is a 1981 Global Coach/Innsbrook Manufacturing Chrysler Cordoba. They made about 200 between the Cordoba, Mirada and Imperial. And obviously, this is a real convertible. And I'm willing to bet it's one of the nicest ones left.
