The Cuban convertible peso was able to be converted to and from foreign currencies like the U.S. Dollar, the Euro, and the British Pound Sterling commonly used by foreign tourists and could be exchanged in hard currency stores by Cubans in the tourist trade for imported goods and food. For most of it's life, the Convertible Peso (often called a CUC, "kook", or chavito) was pegged one-for-one to the U.S. Dollar although only that currency was subjected to a 10% discount when exchanged for CUCs not shared with the Euro or Pound. The CUC was one of the two official currencies with the Cuban Peso, the medium of exchange among the locals, being the other.
The CUC was withdrawn from circulation and officially demonetized on 30 December 2021 leaving the Cuban Peso the only medium of exchange for tourists and locals alike.
