CONTINGENCY OPERATING SITE MAREZ, Iraq – First Lieutenant Peter Curtin, an operations officer assigned to 5th Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Advise and Assist Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, sprints the last mile of an Army Physical Fitness Test at Contingency Operating Site Marez, Iraq, Aug. 2, 2011. Curtin, a native of Boston, Mass., completed the APFT as a prerequisite for the battalion’s “Spur Ride”. The Fort Hood trooper participated in the cavalry tradition to earn the privilege of wearing silver spurs and being inducted into the Order of the Spur.

A large explosion of confiscated mortar rounds, grenades, guns and other explosive devices set up by Army explosive ordnance disposal technicians on Contingency Operating Base Q-West, Iraq, Dec. 31. The controlled blast, which contained more than 1,500 pounds of explosives, was set off at midnight as a way to ring in the New Year from Iraq.

CONTINGENCY OPERATING BASE SPEICHER, Iraq – Command Sgt. Maj. Joseph R. Allen, U.S. Forces-Iraq command sergeant major, and Command Sgt. Maj. Daniel A. Dailey, 4th Infantry Division and U.S. Division-North’s senior enlisted leader, exit the helipad at the U.S. Division-North headquarters at Contingency Operating Base Speicher, Iraq, Feb. 1, 2011. Allen and Daily conducted a circulation of the base, meeting with Soldiers various units and task forces operating at COB Speicher. The U.S. Forces-Iraq command sergeant major recognized Soldiers from each unit or task force for their consistent hard work and dedication to the mission.
