These tombs consist essentially of a burial chamber 20 to 30 metres long and two to three metres high. Originally the whole structure was covered by a mound resembling an overturned ship's hull. The front of the structure is defined by a kind of semicircle, as if to symbolise the horns of a bull, and in older tombs a finely carved stele up to four metres high was placed in the centre of the semicircle.

In origine, l'intera struttura era coperta da un tumulo che ricordava lo scafo di una nave rovesciata. 1 / Red and blue / Female and male. Opposites and yet from the same consistent material. Two – a perfect match for a good couple – in whatever constellation or combination. I hope for more tolerance for the future.
2 / Red and blue / The colors of Flickr. A perfect match. A wonderful opportunity to meet like-minded people through photography, to see your inspiring images – I have been doing this for exactly two years this October with a lot of fun and joy. A reason to celebrate, thanks for that ;-)
3 / Red and blue / Yes, and in the end, pins are essential for preparation when sewing – and you need a few more ... These two are in a linen shirt that will disappear in the wardrobe for the time being – autumn has arrived here, today it's pouring. Yesterday maybe I was able to take this picture outside in my garden for the last time – you can see my garden in the reflection ;-)

One of the most consistent photographers on Flickr and 500px is Stuart Allen. His simple uncluttered photographs are executed to perfection. Hope he forgives me my plagiarism, as it is meant as my poor attempt for a compliment.

Only a consistent mother could love. This was the CC I remember growing up. Mixed match piles of junk, hoping the couple would be running at the other end. An empty coal train is rolling through East Cabin and is about to cross the Mississippi River into Iowa. The train will run across the state to Council Bluffs, where it will be delivered back to the UP.

We've been dealing with a drought and temperatures consistently in the high 80's for the last several weeks. But today, all of that changed. Storms and rain arrived along with a substantial drop in temperatures. And it looks like the the cooler weather is here to stay.
Fall usually arrives in September in this area. But I've never seen it come so rapidly. And, coincidentally, on the equinox.

So I want to start this off by saying I am consistently over-ambitious. Take today, for example. Today, I thought to myself, in my second attempt at using my new tablet, why don't I go ahead and try to draw a hood and a magic bubble and a shirt, on top of the usual hair, lighting, and color effects that I normally do.
Mind you, I don't draw/can't draw. Part of the purpose of this tablet is to try new things. Well ... I eventually gave up and realised my hood was actually a cloud. So I made it a magical effing cloud. And by the end I was just brain tired and gave up on the shirt altogether.
Anyways, a pile-up of Kira Balestra.

Ricketts Glen State Park, Benton, PA, USA
My wife Fran and I decided to give the birds a break for the day and headed up to Rickett's Glen. Their claim to fame is 22 waterfalls along a 7.2 mile loop trail. We survived the hike, but let me tell you, it's strenuous. You're walking along the trails right next to the creeks on wet rocks. I thought I was going to have a heart attack on 3 different parts of the trail. Most of the 22 falls are photogenic, but some had a lot of debris in them, making them unattractive.
We waited for an overcast day when the light would be soft and consistent. A full-sun day would produce harsh, contrastly light with hotspots and deep shadows. Can't wait to go back when the leaves are changing color.

her head is consistently filled with millions of magical, practical and ripe ideas, at least 10 of which she's probably working on right this very minute. today she's analyzing fiction, flying tiny butterfly kites and making chocolate bread pudding. to call her a muse would be a ridiculous understatement - is there another name for someone who takes you to a wall that she admires on her walks to school, then basically gives you this accidental, psychedelic neon thunderstorm (even though she has her camera at the ready) as a perfect piece of eye candy to sweeten your afternoon - what do you call a person like that?
The mole in the dog costume is no longer allowed in the garden. The animal dug up more earth than any construction company. I have to stay consistent now. But those eyes...

The Cyprus Scops owl is endemic to the island of Cyprus. It is reported in the literature to occur in rural areas, woodlands, and forests on the island from sea level up to 1,900 metres (6,200 ft).
The Cyprus Scops owl differs from Eurasian Scops owl in that it has a double noted song (vs. single noted), it lacks a rufous morph (vs. has a rufous morph), and that it shows consistent plumage differences (with Cyprus Scops owl appearing darker than Eurasian Scops owls)
The nesting habits of these species are of particular interest, as this is a cavity-nesting endemic species on an island that lacks any species of woodpeckers, and Calabrian pines Pinus brutia
As we've consistently visited the tourist places next door, this familiar landscape has changed bit by bit over the years. This was a moody weather day and it impacted me a bit, as I realized the old dilapidated barn that used to be near the road (by the left edge) was now gone. But I'm glad to say the vet seemed to be in business all these years

Sunday morning at the Ravines was quite cold for late March with a consistent breeze. The temperature at sunrise was 23 with a windchill of 13 degrees. But I have not been there in a few weeks so I really needed to go and check on the Bald Eagles. I believe the Eagles are sitting on the nest hopefully keeping the eggs warm as Lee and I witnessed a "changing of the guard" this morning.
This Eagle landed in a Sycamore tree that is kind of close to the nest after sitting on the eggs. So we knew through experience with these Eagles that he would make his way north so we positioned ourselves for the Eagle to fly our way. We were right that the Eagle headed north but to our luck he landed in a tree just above where we were standing. We re-positioned ourselves waiting for his/her next move. Well the Eagle stayed there for a bit and the cold set in and Lee decided he had enough and started heading to his car. He told me to be ready as these Eagles usually take off when Lee is changing positions/batteries or leaving. Lee was correct again as in about 7 minutes after he left this Bald Eagle took flight and and headed north right in front of me.
Thanks Lee....

Roan Mountain is typically the pinnacle of my year. The Catawba Rhododendron bloom highlights what is likely the most spectacular thing I see and photograph annually. This year was no different. However, a combination of planned and unplanned circumstances had me really chasing my tail around, spending long periods on the highway followed by some poor decisions while in the field that left me exhausted (it's easy to underestimate the importance of keeping yourself fresh mentally and physically if you want to produce). The end result was only two to three days chasing the Catawba Rhododendron this year. Surprisingly, I actually dropped the mountain after this short period feeling really good about what I had seen and what I had captured. I knew that the conditions were difficult--as they always are at Roan--but, I really thought I had done what I needed to present some fantastic scenics from the annual bloom. Upon later inspection, most of my takes are a mess of wind blur and non-optimal lighting. Those that pass the quality inspection--like the one above--are pushing the camera hard with higher isos to stop the constant swaying action of the vegetation as consistent winds blanketed the exposed ridge.
All in all, it was a beautiful bloom on Grassy Ridge and another wonderful year of photography in the Roan Highlands. I would be lying if I didn't say that I'm a bit disappointed in myself for the lack of production and the shots that were missed. However, I'm not ever going to complain about spending some time in one of my favorite places!
The yellow tent in the clearing belonged to J Christian Smilanic (Dawnfire Photography) who I would later meet. Great dude and photographer out of the Asheville, NC area.

NS 304 and 305 were the two trains on the Dayton District (save the locals, obviously) that railfans could rely on for good or unusual consists and power. Originally, they took over for the dedicated steel trains out of Middletown, OH on NS 60T/63T that were abolished in 2015. Since then, almost every day, 304 and 305 had some sort of neat consist, ranging from foreign leaders, to heritage units, to second generation EMDs. Add to that down to the hour timeliness thanks to their consistent departures from their respective terminals, and it was a good period to railfan this usually slow stretch of railroad.
Now, things have changed. NS' implementation of TOP21 system wide eventually claimed the 304/5, abolishing it as of June 29, 2019. In it's place is a Columbus to Moraine (Dayton, OH) turn, usually running in the early morning hours, and with much less fanfare. It's slim pickings out here now, to the point where going out is not even worth it.
Shoot what you can, as often as you can.

What has been one of the most consistent employers and a fixture of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Tilden Mine has a history dating all the way back to 1930. Today, it is the last operating iron ore mine in the state with neighbor Empire Mine shut down. The mine was recently given a 30 year life, which sounds good now, is still a ticking clock that worry many in the area. In the shadow of the massive tailings piles from the open pit mine, which are the tallest land mass above sea level in the State of Michigan, CN U745 make their way onto LS&I trackage with bentonite loads for the pellet manufacturing process and empty vans for loading ore to ship to Algoma Steel in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. For now, many who see the mine as a way of life, are hoping that way of life is secure for many years to come.
Guys I am having the worst issues with my blogs server as it is consistently maxing out the server CPU, so they block my website. I am constantly being put in the virtual corner and it sucks. What is the use of a website if you cant have more than 2k visiting it everyday? It just doesn't make sense. Can you share who your server is and how they deal with your blog load? The next option for me is a significant cost increase to 80 dollars a month.... and that is insane. Currently I am with Site Ground.

One advantage of having consistent routes scouting for wildlife is being able to track ones that you see quite often. These two Ospreys have selected a tall light pole on an athletic field outside of our town and have been busy building a nest that would make a chiropractor looking for customers happy.
There is a back story to this photo. I have a number of photos showing the male flying through the air with corn stalks, grass and other material as he takes them to the nest where the female waits. Occasionally she will fly with him but no matter if she is not, she keeps a attentive eye on him.
She is very particular. I have seen her dive bomb him when he brings back something she doesn't like and I have a photo of her knocking him off the tower in a dispute over some dried grass he made the mistake thinking was appropriate.
In this photo, he had just brought back the bottom portion of a corn stalk and laid it down in the nest. She glided in and landed on him and looked over his shoulder to judge whether or not his latest contribution met her high standards.
When I was younger and more foolish, I experienced this type of reaction when I attempted to select items to decorate our home.

At the start of Golden Hour, you couldn't ask for better light as a westbound BNSF oil empty charges west out of Leyden. BNSF pretty consistently runs their eastbound oil loads in a 3x(0)x3 configuration. Consequently, it makes sense that this westbound empty has six units on the head end. Three of the unit move to the east end of the train for journey back east.

“Found the law of the oak leaves”? At the heart of Hopkins’s lifelong and consistent poetic reside the concepts of inscape and instress, thus named by Hopkins when he was an undergraduate. By “inscape” Hopkins means pattern in nature, and by “nature” he means not only oak leaves in the woods and clouds in the summer, but the more general reality of the universe, of “the way things are.” For Hopkins, inscape results from divinely intelligent creation. Catherine Phillips, one editor of Hopkins’s collected works, explains his idea of instress this way: “Unlike ‘inscape,’ which is the result of mental analysis and perception, ‘instress’ is more nebulous, often, although not always, associated with feeling; it is the identifying impression a thing can communicate to a careful and receptive observer. Hopkins also uses the term to mean ‘the stress within,’ the force which binds something or a person into a unit.”13 Those of us who have the eyes to see and the will to know can instress an inscape by not just “taking” it in, but by “stressing” it in. “The law of the oak leaves” is their inscape; Hopkins “found” that law on July 19, 1866, and instressed it.

Mourning Doves, consistently, seem to swoop down under our backyard feeders to clean up the seeds and nuts thrown to the ground by the smaller song birds.
The Great Egret is consistent in appearance across all ages. It is easily identified by the combination of its large size, black legs, and stout orange-yellow bill, but some show a black-tipped bill. Slender, long necked, tall, and graceful in bearing, it is deliberate in its movements, frequently foraging with its bill held horizontal or tilted skyward. Great Egrets inhabit saltwater or freshwater, attend mixed heron flocks, and often associate with Snowy Egrets.
Lost Lake is a lake in Mount Hood National Forest. We have to identify it as the one in Hood River County because we have more than one Lost Lake here in Oregon.
The lake is bounded on the east by 4,468-foot (1,362 m) Lost Lake Butte and on the southwest by 4,556-foot (1,389 m) Preachers Peak. The lake is fed by three unnamed intermittent creeks from Lost Lake Butte, and Inlet Creek from Preachers Peak. The lake maintains a very consistent level via an outlet at the north tip, the source of Lake Branch Hood River, a tributary of West Fork Hood River. It is the second-deepest lake in Mount Hood National Forest after Wahtum Lake at 167 feet (51 m).
Shot with a Nikon 200mm f/4 AF-D macro lens @ f/11. No drip or trigger mechanism was used. I set up a light stand with a boom that has a small hole at the end, and I sent the drops through the hole to get a consistent drop placement. My shutter release cable was wishy-washy and wouldn't give me a consistent shutter time, so I had to push the shutter button on the camera with my other hand.
Key lighting used a Godox AD360 to the left and a little in front of the drops. I had a Godox AD600 behind as the backdrop using a purple gel filter and a Glow EZ Lock Arc softbox.
For the past several weeks, Skyfire (the sunset prediction app you can purchase which works in conjunction with The Photographer's Ephemeris) has been striking out on a fairly consistent basis. For multiple weeks the app gave a prediction rating of 80% or higher for both sunrise and sunset here in Orange County only to have skies clear out at game time. My buddy Eric and I have taken to calling the app "Sky Liar" which seems like a much more a propos title for this service.
To be fair, Sunsetwx has also struck out on a number of occasions, but has been doing better than Skyliar. I should probably point out that I seldom head out for a shoot based strictly on these two apps. I almost always pull up the NOAA satellite imagery on the NWS website and have a quick look at the animation before setting off...just to make sure the folks behind Sky Liar aren't on crack.
But on this particular night, Sky Liar gave Corona Del Mar a 90 percent and Sunsetwx confirmed the prediction. For the first 40 minutes, I was pretty sure I was about to get skunked again, but suddenly I saw a bit of pink begin to glow in the West. 10 minutes later, the entire sky lit up and I set about trying to be in 10 places at once.
Add to that the fact that I caught it on a night when the tide was between 3-4 feet and it was a good night all around. Just when I was thinking I was the only one crazy enough to plow through waist high surf on my way out there, I ran into Joseph Chu who, as it turned out, was just as determined as I was to get a shot from Arch Rock during medium tide. I still haven't worked up the nerve to try that hike during a 5 foot tide or more...but maybe it's time to buy a kayak. :)

Crazy Tuesday - Odd One Out
Sometimes it's very difficult to set up the ideas I have in my head!! I knew the size of the empty red can was not consistent with the empty green ones but hadn't realised the 'stacking' problems I would encounter while setting the shot up !!! However, the wind dropped, the sun shone and I grabbed a couple of shots!!!
With heartfelt thanks to my flickr friends who have so consistently commented or favoured my photos and shared theirs through the year.
Thank you all so much for sharing your quality photos which is a great way to see and keep in touch with the world from home. Also for your kind comments and favours which are much valued.

(Italo Calvino)
What began as a low growl, audible only in the lulls between the frequent gusts of wind, soon grew into a steady and consistent din. Even those with an ear unfamiliar to railroading could tell that the sound was a train, and one that was working hard to battle a grade.
That battle begins in earnest at Hackberry AZ, thirty six miles to the west, where eastbound trains dig in to challenge the third summit on their long journey up the Seligman Subdivision. While higher priority Z and Q trains charge up the 1.42% compensated grade with some speed to spare at the top, most manifests, and stack trains of marine containers grind up the hill at a steady 15-20 mph. The 12,000+ foot long land barge pictured above was a behemoth of mostly MSC cans, originating from Los Angeles Harbour, or the Port of Long Beach. A mixture of newer 'C4' type GE locomotives, and older Dash 9 series were spread out in a 4x2x2 configuration.
The head end passed my position, where my tripod was set up a few hundred feet before the true summit, with the four units roaring in a high throttle notch. The set of mid train distributed power passed three minutes later, still pulling, but either in DPU asynchronous mode, or with the engineer having notched back on the throttle. By the time the pair of rear DPU appeared the train was down to a crawl, with the power in front undoubtedly in dynamic braking, attempting to arrest the heavy train's five mile descent towards the hogback west of Pica.
I had based my camera settings off of a test exposure, taken of the mid train DPU. By the time that warbonnet clad rear DPU 790 passed me, I was almost at my time count to end the exposure. I anxiously held the shutter down until the dim headlight tucked behind the signal relay box for the crossing, hoping that I hadn't blown the image out. Luck was with me, and I only had to darken the exposure about an eighth of an EV to produce the result above. I hope you enjoy viewing the image as much as I did experiencing the making of it!
Over the years I've consistently photographed at my local spots, capturing some of our most common subjects. To some they may seem mundane and boring.. but for me it's purely about the photography. Anything can look good in great conditions. Here I used soft back-lighting and a dark background to capture this flight shot of a Black-headed Gull. Amazingly I didn't even notice the light rain until aftewerwards... what a bonus!! I'll be posting a YouTube video soon on the subject of using back-lighting in photography.
First, my apologies for posting so infrequently lately. Everything is fine, I've just been a little busy and haven't had as much time to devote here as I would like to. Hopefully I can get more consistent again soon.
I didn't take many portraits of Scotch after his surgery in large part because I wanted him to just concentrate on getting better and was a bit stressed out from the whole ordeal. After 17 total trips to the vet and surgery facility in 2016, he's off to a great start here in 2017 at least. He's been healthy, going on multiple long walks a day and is generally just a really happy 13 year old. This portrait comes from the same shoot as my previous Scotch post and I was mostly very pleased with all the results. I picked an evening where he was both calm and alert and didn't have to rely on him napping or sleeping like the previous year. With a handful of tiny treats, I was able to move him around where I wanted. He may be deaf but he still knows a few hand symbols we've used since he was a puppy. He'll still go to where I point, will still sit when I hold up a fist and will lie down when I lower that fist.
For this capture, I held a treat by my face and let him stare away for a few shots before I threw it to him. All dogs look differently when they want a treat or food--my Rottweiler would stare at and inch closer to the food while drooling or snatch it when he thought he had an opening and my old miniature pinscher would growl and bark at me (he was a monster)--but Scotch either figured out my weakness when he was young or simply lucked out. What he does when I'm eating my own food or holding a treat is stare me right in the eyes--this is a dog who hates eye contact--and just look at me like this while I eat, never shifting his gaze to the food. it's impossible to ignore and say no to...and I rarely do. It's so effective, in fact, that I'l typically push aside on my plate the last bite and give it to him so he won't look sad when I put my fork down on an empty plate.
This was also the first time I got to test out my new manfrotto tripod and vanguard pistol grip head. The tripod was a christmas gift to myself and finally gave me a lightweight, sturdy and portable option. It also allows me to get the camera extremely low to the ground like my old vanguard Alta Pro 163AT which is what I've used for the majority of the photographs I've posted here. The head is a vanguard GH-300t which has a built in shutter release if I want an extra hand verses holding a wireless remote. Oddly, my old set up was a vanguard tripod with a manfrotto pistol grip but this new setup seems much better to me. Like the previous post, Scotch is up on a chaise in my brother's office with a black foam board behind him to create the background and let me use a quicker shutter speed. While previous portraits have been favorites as I learned to photograph him and figure out how to achieve the look I wanted, I think these last two have been my favorites overall. These shots have more detail and better poses and the remote shutter on the pistol grip worked surprisingly well and sped up the time needed between the focusing, arrangement and setup of each shot.
Again, sorry for the infrequent posts and I hope everyone is having a great weekend :)

The local winter inversion has been fairly consistent over the last couple of years; the fog rolls in and settles for about a week. This makes it fairly simple to plan an evening photography walk out to a favourite viewing spot.
This year the opportunities have been elusive. When I am unavailable or don't expect it, the fog suddenly arrives but doesn't stick around. When the forecast calls for it and I pack my camera bag, the fog fails to materialize.
This week I finally went up to try out my backcountry ski gear. It hasn't been used in at least 2 years! There were hints of fog creeping in after work so I returned for my camera bag hoping I could go for a photography walk after skiing. But after an enjoyable skin up Seymour Mountain, the city was still clearly visible below.
I didn't realize however that East of Vancouver, the Fraser Valley was completely enveloped. Halfway down the mountain there is a decent viewpoint and I curiously parked there. The clouds were further away than my regular vantage but I pulled out the tripod and took a couple of quick shots. The thickness of the clouds led me to plan for a trip up the following evening. But the low clouds dissipated throughout the day and nothing was left to shoot.
In an effort to share photos more frequently than last year, I pulled this one from the Wednesday snaps. It was converted from RAW, added a little brightness, contrast, and removed some digital noise.
