The rufous-naped lark (Mirafra africana) or rufous-naped bush lark is a widespread and conspicuous species of lark in the lightly wooded grasslands, open savannas and farmlands of the Afrotropics. Males attract attention to themselves by their bold and repeated wing-fluttering displays from prominent perches, which is accompanied by a melodious and far-carrying whistled phrase. This rudimentary display has been proposed as the precursor to the wing-clapping displays of other bush lark species. They have consistently rufous outer wings and a short erectile crest, but the remaining plumage hues and markings are individually and geographically variable. It has a straight lower, and longish, curved upper mandible.

The rufous-naped lark is geographically very variable, and is taken to form a species complex with the allopatric red-winged lark of East Africa, and perhaps with the Somali lark. It is a smaller version of the first, with a finer bill and shorter tail, but their morphological and vocal features do not intergrade where their ranges meet. The rufous nape is an equivocal field character, being absent in the tropical races[8] and in some individuals.

Due to the inherent variability of the species, some of the 23–25 odd races are perhaps insufficiently distinct or clinal. Consequently, M. a. rostrata and M. a. zuluensis are sometimes merged with M. a. africana, and M. a. okahandjae with M. a. pallida. On the other hand, a few taxa are arguably incipient or full species. The distinctly plumaged blackish lark comprises races M. a. nyikae and M. a. nigrescens, and is altitudinally isolated from M. a. transvaalensis in nearby Tanzania. Malbrant's lark, M. (a.) malbranti, which ranges from Gabon to Angola, has a fairly distinct display flight, but may intergrade with M. a. kabalii in Zambia.

Sharpe's lark, M. (a.) sharpii, of northwestern Somalia, has almost plain, coppery red upper parts and is sometimes (e.g., by Sibley and Monroe) regarded as a separate and endangered species. Its small range of some 21,200 km2 is impacted by overgrazing and conversion to croplands. It may however be conspecific with Somali lark, M. (a.) somalica, which differs by its very long bill and white edges to the outer tail feathers. The Somali lark is sometimes considered a race of rufous-naped lark, but is alternatively deemed a full species in Mirafra or Certhilauda.

Twenty-three subspecies are recognized:

M. a. henrici Bates, 1930 is found from Guinea to south-western Ivory Coast.

M. a. batesi Bannerman, 1923 was originally described as a separate species. It is found from central Nigeria to south-eastern Niger and western Chad.

M. a. stresemanni Bannerman, 1923, the "Cameroon rufous-naped lark", was originally described as a separate species. It is found in north-central Cameroon.

M. a. bamendae Serle, 1959 is found in western Cameroon.

M. a. kurrae Lynes, 1923, the "Darfur rufous-naped lark", is found in western Sudan.

M. a. tropicalis Hartert, 1900, the "Uganda rufous-naped lark", is found from eastern Uganda and western Kenya to north-western Tanzania

M. a. sharpii Elliot, DG, 1897, or "Sharpe's lark", is also known as the "red Somali lark" or "Somali lark", but should not be confused with M. (a.) somalica. It was originally described as a separate species, and is found in north-western Somalia.[14]

M. a. ruwenzoria Kinnear, 1921, the "Rwenzori rufous-naped lark", is found from the DRC to south-western Uganda.

M. a. athi Hartert, 1900, the "Athi rufous-naped lark", is found from central Kenya to north-eastern Tanzania.

M. a. harterti Neumann, 1908, the "Ukamba rufous-naped lark", is also known as "Kikuyu rufous-naped lark". It is found in south-central Kenya.

M. a. malbranti Chapin, 1946, or "Malbrant's lark", was originally described as a separate species. It is found from Gabon to central Angola and the southern DRC.

M. a. chapini Grant, CHB & Mackworth-Praed, 1939 is found in south-eastern DRC and north-western Zambia.

M. a. occidentalis (Hartlaub, 1857), the "Gabon rufous-naped lark", is found in western Angola.

M. a. kabalii White, CMN, 1943 is found in north-eastern Angola and north-western Zambia.

M. a. gomesi White, CMN, 1944 is found in eastern Angola and western Zambia.

M. a. grisescens Sharpe, 1902, the "Matabele rufous-naped lark", was originally described as a separate species. Found in western Zambia, northern Botswana and north-western Zimbabwe.

M. a. pallida Sharpe, 1902, the "Damara rufous-naped lark", was originally described as a separate species. It is found in south-western Angola and north-western Namibia.

M. a. ghansiensis (Roberts, 1932) is found in eastern Namibia and western Botswana.

M. a. nigrescens Reichenow, 1900, the "Ukinga rufous-naped lark", was originally described as a separate species. It is found in north-eastern Zambia and southern Tanzania.

M. a. isolata Clancey, 1956 is found in south-eastern Malawi.

M. a. nyikae Benson, 1939 is found in eastern Zambia, northern Malawi and south-western Tanzania.

M. a. transvaalensis Hartert, 1900, the "Transvaal rufous-naped lark", is found from Tanzania to northern South Africa.

M. a. africana Smith, 1836 is found in south-eastern South Africa.

The rufous-naped lark is a fairly large and robust lark species,[3] with rather heavy flight. The sexes are similar, but males average larger and heavier. Adults are individually and geographically variable. It measures 15–18 cm from bill tip to tail tip[16] and weighs 40-44 g. The streaked upper parts, short erectile crest, creamy-buff eyebrow that merges with the lore, and the rufous flight feathers are easily discernible features.The hindcrown and nape are streaked along the feather centers while the margins vary from chestnut, rufous or pinkish buff to greyish brown. The wings appear conspicuously rufous in flight, while the outer edges of the primaries show up as a rufous panel on the closed wing. The underwing coverts are rufous, and upper coverts are broadly edged tawny or buff (or grey in race grisescens). The tail is dark brown, but the outer webs of the outer tail feathers vary from buff (cf. africana and sharpii) to tawny or bright rufous.The mantle is lighter brown than the back, and the rump still darker brown. The flanks are a shade darker than the rufous-buff belly, but regionally the plumage may also be stained red by soil. The throat is unmarked but the pale rufous upper breast is streaked and spotted darker brown. The eyes are hazel brown, the longish bill is blackish and pinkish, and the feet pink to pinkish brown. Juveniles have bold black spotting on the crown, mantle and wing coverts, all edged with buff, while the breast spotting is more blotchy or diffuse.

M. a. athi of the Kenyan highlands is typically coloured, but like other tropical races, lacks the rufous nape. Most accepted races are distinguished based on the colour of the back or underpart plumage, or the amount of streaking on the ear coverts and flanks. High altitude races M. a. nyikae and M. a. nigrescens, which occur above 2,000 meters, have very dark upper part plumages and increased flank streaking. M. a. tropicalis which is found above 1,000 meters has a solid rufous wash over the underparts. Of the southern African races, those in the southeast are the largest and darkest (cf. M. a. africana and M. a. rostrata), with a cline towards lightly streaked and pale pinkish plumages in the northwest.

The rufous-naped lark is found in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa. It has a very large but discontinuous[19] range, with an estimated global extent of occurrence of 5,600,000 km2. Its range is believed to be increasingly fragmented in the north, from which a declining population is inferred. The southern African population has not contracted in range or abundance, save for areas of extensive cultivation or urbanization. Livestock ranching is believed to have created bare patches in grasslands, which they favour. The populations of southern Mozambique and Swaziland have been estimated at >50,000 and 100,000 individuals respectively.

It tolerates a range of dry or mesic habitats, typically bushy grassland or sparsely wooded savannah. It also occurs along the fringes of marshes, in woodland clearings or in the fragmented ecotone of woodland and grassland. It is present from near sea level in the south, to about 3,000 meters near the equator. In Zimbabwe it occurs from 900 to 1,800 meters, and in East Africa from 1,000 to 3,000 meters. Termitaria, bushes, small trees or fence posts provide perches for display, while a combination of tall and short grass provides cover and foraging space. In southern Africa it occurs only sparsely in grassy fynbos, grassy karoo and upland sour grasslands, but has high reporting rates in the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe, in miombo and in sweet or mixed grasslands.

The rufous-naped lark is sedentary, territorial and monogamous. It is often sluggish, allowing a close approach. Short distances are covered in low, level or undulating flight, or it may flee an intruder by running and dodging through grass haphazardly. It may be difficult to flush from grass, and is easily overlooked when not singing.

At any time of the year, but especially when the rains commence, a male will spend hours calling from a conspicuous perch. A clear, somewhat variable, whistled phrase of three to five syllables is typical, which may be rendered as tseep-tseeoo, teeoo-teewee or chiwiki-chiwi. The song may be changed after each 20 or so repetitions. During some intermissions the wings are audibly fluttered in the few seconds between phrases. This results in a quick prrrrt or phrrrp rattle, and may lift the bird off its perch. The crest is also lifted during display. It may alternatively sing a rudimentary song consisting of whistles, tweets and trills (distinguishable as imitated calls), during short flights over the grass or during an upward spiraling flight, before it planes down. Race malbranti in particular, may sing during a straight and direct display flight and clap its wings above its back. Perched males may also string together fragments of the songs of various grassland birds. It utters peewit, tweekiree or pree, pree notes in alarm.

The Corvette has been a consistent seller for GM, through good economic times and bad.

So it's a mystery why this particular economic downturn has sent Corvette sales into the proverbial toilet; down by almost 2/3 since 2007. It's a sign of extreme loyalty within the company that the Corvette survived GM's bankruptcy, when the Solstice, Sky, and the Corvette brother-under-the-skin, the Cadillac XLR, went extinct.

Why have Corvette sales suddenly hit the doldrums? It may be that consumers increasingly see a two-seat car as impractical, even though, according to the Government's Office of Technology Assessment, 95% of all work commutes and 83% of all car trips are taken with ONE person in the vehicle. Isn't it more impractical to buy a 5000 lb, 13mpg, 8-passenger SUV to haul 50 lb. bags of manure home from Lowe's once a year, or a bunch of Little Leaguers to an away game once a week?

But perception is perception, and even at Porsche, the sales situation with the 911 is sufficiently dire that, for a short time, Porsche was promoting it as a "family car" on the basis of its vestigial rear seats.

But back to Corvette. Maybe the upcoming 2014(?) C7 will bring things back to 30,000/yr. volumes.

Or maybe GM will have to live with 10-15K as the new normal. In any case, GM would be foolish indeed to get ride of the one car that sets almost every American male jaw to drooling, whether they admit it or not. Or maybe they can pitch its relative ease of driveability and 25mpg highway gas mileage to well-to-do, professional women.

Just tossing out ideas here, but the idea is to keep it in production, and the way to do that is to increase sales, by any means necessary. Something like Dean's recent pitch for eggnog as an Easter beverage, too. Or Swanson in the '50's, inventing TV dinners (now frozen entrees) to get rid of an oversupply of leftover Thanksgiving turkeys. Whatever it takes, folks.

In addition, a very important factor for me is the comfortable chair. I'm usually there doing tasting menu and stay for about 3 hours, I'm glad it's a large well-cushioned chair and not a wooden one (despite of my own well-cushioned butt). Some of my food enthusiast friends have often suffered from my whining about chairs at other places that serve good food but butt-hurting chairs.

5) Friendly, attentive and well-trained service staff. Not only the Sommeliers, but talking to a few servers, they not only know the plates they're serving but they seem to know wine well as well. Knowing that they're taking courses in food/wine to improve themselves, I feel the sincerity and respect they have for their profession. Instead of hiring cute hot actor/actress to do this part-time, I feel that servers at Canoe treat what they are doing as a profession, as a career. Sommeliers are not on this list because I'm ignorant with wine. No one else but my own weakness. But every time I'm at Canoe, I do the wine pairing and i enjoy my experinece, especially the recent Global wine pairing.

6) Dedication to regional Canadian cuisine with local ingredients. I had always felt and not proud of the fact that many (incl myself) think Canada lacks a definition in cuisine. There is french cuisine, there is Japanese cuisine, there is Chinese cuisine etc. When I have friends visiting from oversea, I want to take them to try Canadian cuisine. I used to think that's Swiss Chalet. But now, I am glad I know where to take them if I want to show them that I'm a proud Canadian.

7) the view - the ever changing multi dimension artwork in the cooperation of God and us through history.

Consistently overestimating the size of Gen Robert Lee's Confederate forces, the Union commander Maj Gen George McClellan continued his characteristic slowness and questionable deployment of forces. With the Lower Bridge and Middle Bridge of Antietam Creek dominated by Confederate artillery, McClellan tried to flank the Confederate line from the North, sending I Corps under Maj Gen Joseph Hooker through the Upper Bridge on Sept 16. On the morning of Sept 17, 1862, Hooker's troops would lead the attack on Lee's lines, moving down the Hagerstown Turnpike and targeting the plateau upon which Dunker Church was perched upon.

Hooker's Corps was a veteran unit and perhaps one of the best in the Army of the Potomac. It was also battered, having suffered significant casualties in the fighting at Second Bull Run and South Mountain only days before, and numbered perhaps 8600. They faced off against 7700 of Jackson's likewise battered forces. As the troops of Brig Gens Abner Doubleday, James Ricketts and George Meade's divisions left the shelter of the North Woods around 5:30AM, they were hit by artillery fire from Maj Gen James Stuart's cavalry on the right and Col Stephen Lee's artillery in front. A ferocious artillery duel commenced, with both sides suffering significant casualties. As the Union troops continued through towards the Miller Cornfield located here, Hooker suddenly noticed the glean of bayonets among the corn. These were the Confederate troops of the divisions of Brig Gen Alexander Lawton and John Jones. Hooker ordered his infantry to halt while bringing up four batteries of artillery to fire over the heads of his troops, blasting at the Confederates in the cornfield at point-blank range. Hooker then ordered his Corps to attack. Surging through the high stalks of corn, Rickett's and Meade's troops engaged in fierce, confusing, hand-to-hand fighting with Jackson's troops. Visibility was poor, and orders were lost in the din of the engagement, but after heavy losses the Union forces began to prevail. Just then the Louisiana Tigers under Brig Gen Harry Hays counterattacked, driving back Rickett's and Meade's troops from the cornfield, the 12th Massachusetts suffering 67% losses. Hay's troops surged back through the cornfield, only to be blasted back by Union artillery on the Northern end, suffering 64% casualties.

According to Hooker, "... every stalk of corn in the northern and greater part of the field was cut as closely as could have been done with a knife, and the [Confederates] slain lay in rows precisely as they had stood in their ranks a few moments before."

eBird documentation. I noticed a large group of migrating raptors through an opening in the canopy. I only had a few seconds before they would pass the opening so I snapped a few quick pics without trying to adjust exposure. Based upon quick binocular view and image post processing (lightening and scaling) I am pretty sure it was a flock of Plumbeous Kites. I can not rule out any Mississippi Kites mixed in, but the individuals I have examined are consistent with Plumbeous.

I'm consistently fascinated by watching the construction happening outside of my workplace (I work as Epic, so construction never stops). I have had various nice views of this construction, and it's amazing seeing what these guys can do so quickly. This photo is one of the many large machinery that drives around all day long, doing whatever it is they are doing. The original photo was kind of washed out and soft, but using Topaz InFocus, Adjust, Detail, and Adjust again, I think I got something that I enjoy out of it.

I imagine this won't be the last Epic construction related photo to appear in this 365 project.

The Labrador Retriever, originated in Newfoundland and were bred to work along side fisherman to help pull nets and catch fish that escaped from fishing lines.

The Golden Retriever, originated in Scotland and were bred to retrieve shot waterfowl and game birds during hunting.

This is interesting ? First they assist alcohol products by giving them a generous 4 times the sin tax break over the tobacco products, then they create legislation to legalize and to enable the smoking of cannabis, and, then they create more legislation enacting Bill C-218 to open up the flood gates of wide open at home and mobile phone sports parlor betting and casino gambling as never before seen or even imagined in Canada - And then, after all of this enabling assistance, they will then proceed to create a brand new Cabinet position called Minister of mental health and addictions, and her first order of business when assuming her new job is to once again target and single out tobacco products for yet another restriction ? Listen as Dr. Heather Morrison, P.E.I.'s Chief Public Health Officer has blamed smoking for the current problems in her troubled health care system and for the long wait times at Emergency ? She goes on to suggest that in order to contain this threat that a drastic solution is necessary and is suggesting that constitutional rights and freedoms guaranteed under a Constitution be removed from some citizens for the rest of their lives in order to protect PEI citizens ?

It is unfortunate here, that the Minister seems oblivious to and never mentions in the interview the real reasons for the current health care crisis that has not so much been caused by smokers but by an incredible lack of planning and foresight by her predecessors who had for years cut staff and slashed hospital budgets to the bone. There is also a surprisingly large influx of newcomers and foreigners incl students now moving unimpeded by Government into a small and unprepared Province creating shortages of Doctors and Nurses. And, what about the huge drain on the health system caused by the abuse of alcohol, social media abuse, gambling addictions, cannabis abuse, opioid and fentanyl hard drug use, mental illness and depression. And we mustn't forget all of those suffering from obesity, sugar diabetes, poor diet choices, lack of exercise and from the effects of overdoing fast food and junk food. There is also the victims of violence, be it domestic or other, and the increase in accidents caused by pot and alcohol impairment. And, we must also remember the ever growing number of elderly residents in our society needing attention and now living longer. Ashford always goes above and beyond in his role, consistently serving on multiple committees and working on varies projects. He's always doing the "extra" stuff that no one else steps up to do. He puts his 110% effort into the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion committee, the Student Development Committee, is on several search committees including being the chair, assists with scholarship review, all while maintaining a top performing program area. In the last year, he has had to onboard a new professional staff member in his area, as well as pick up additional responsibilities as another professional he oversaw left their position. I am always waiting for him to complain about all he has to do, all he's been "volun-told" to do, but he never does. His goal is to make everything better than the way he left it, and he does just that. I admire his positive attitude when faced with challenging times, always willing to do even more.

Un dolmen, que en bretón quiere decir mesa grande de piedra, es una construcción megalítica consistente por lo general en varias losas (ortostatos) hincadas en la tierra en posición vertical y una losa de cubierta apoyada sobre ellas en posición horizontal. El conjunto conforma una cámara y está rodeado en muchos casos por un montón de tierra de sujeción o piedras que cubren en parte las losas verticales, formando una colina artificial túmulo, distinguible como marca funeraria.

Estas estructuras se dan en Europa Occidental, sobre todo en la franja atlántica, y fueron construidas durante el Neolítico final y el Calcolítico. Su función atribuida suele ser la de sepulcro colectivo, pero también se cree que puede ser una forma de reclamar un territorio y reforzar la identidad grupal, dada la poca identidad de los poblados neolíticos en tránsito a los calcolíticos y que prepara las ciudades de época del bronce.

Los modelos sencillos de dólmenes consisten en dos o más piedras verticales y encima una horizontal, ejercicio de destreza constructiva monumental sin par. Generalmente se acompaña de otras piedras en los alrededores de grandes dimensiones.

Cuando al dolmen se le añade un pasillo que lo conecta con el exterior se le llama tumba de corredor a la manera de avenida para desfilar el cortejo funerario, cuya cámara puede estar construida con ortostatos (grandes losas) mediante una falsa cúpula hecha con lajas de piedra o haber sido excavada en la roca. Es el primer ejemplo de habilidad constructiva al mover enormes bloques con el reto de mantener alzada la estructura.

Un tercer tipo de tumba megalítica es la de galería, más tardía, en la que el corredor no se diferencia de la cámara, y que a veces cuenta con pilares, prototipo posterior de las columnas en los templos, con el fin de sostener las pesadas cubiertas.

Delaware Maternal and Child Health Summit by DelDHSS

Saying that Delaware has made consistent progress in reducing its infant mortality rate, Governor Carney told the Delaware Maternal and Child Health Summit on April 17 that the goal is that “every child in Delaware is born healthy” and has the opportunity to be successful in his or her life.

“I’m optimistic that we can address all of these challenges,” the Governor said in figuring out new and innovative ways to bring down the state’s infant mortality rate from its current 7.5 deaths per 1,000 live births to match or fall below the national average rate of 5.9. Delaware’s infant mortality rate has declined from a high of 9.3 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2005. The Delaware Healthy Mothers and Infants Consortium was created in 2005 to address Delaware’s high rate of infant deaths.

“The fact that some segments in our state already have birth outcomes that are better than the national average is a clear indication that we can get there together,” DHSS Secretary Dr. Kara Odom Walker said of the state’s white infant mortality rate that is at 5.1 deaths per 1,000 live births. The black infant mortality rate in Delaware is 12.5. “For the families who experience this terrible nightmare, we can do better,” Secretary Walker said. “That’s what gets me up every day, knowing we can do better.”

Lt. Gov. Bethany Hall-Long, a registered nurse, also applauded the progress made to reduce infant mortality in the state, but said the measure is a public health indicator of a state’s overall health.

Attorney General Matt Denn said the increasing number of substance-exposed infants in the state indicates that “the opioid crisis is a healthy infants crisis as well.”

Kenn Harris of New Haven Healthy Start, one of the summit’s keynote speakers, has devoted his career to child and maternal health after he and his wife lost their second son as a baby. “There is no single fix for this issue of infant mortality … It takes innovation,” he said in encouraging the more than 300 attendees at the Chase Center to listen to and engage their communities. “We have to work on our listening.”

2012 Camp Zama Bon Odori Festival by U.S. Army Garrison Japan

The 53rd annual Bon Odori Festival at CAmp Zama was held Aug. 4. The festival is consistently the largest bilateral event of the year for U.S. Army Japan, this year attracting more than 30,000 visitors to the installation. The festival featured live entertainment, games for children, a variety of ethnic foods, bilateral sports and fireworks show.

The United States Army Garrison Japan and its 16 supported installation sites are located in the island of Honshu and Okinawa in Japan. The USAG Japan mission is to support the Headquarters, U.S. Army Japan / I Corps (fwd) to ensure mission readiness and the quality of life of the Army community in a sustainable, transforming joint and combined environment.

The USAG-J area of responsibility spans 1,500 miles from north to south of Japan.
