Over 3,600 Lancaster County fifth graders from 47 schools attended the 25th annual Earth Wellness Festival (EWF) on March 20 and 21 at Southeast Community College. Students rotated among 25-minute sessions and then attended a culminating activity with featured presenters, World Bird Sanctuary from St. Louis.

Students discover and explore the relationships and interdependency of land, water, air and living resources through hands-on activities.

The festival is organized by six local agencies: Lower Platte South Natural Resources District, Lincoln Public Schools, Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department, Nebraska Extension in Lancaster County, UNL School of Natural Resources and Southeast Community College – Lincoln.

I took this photos at the Water Conservation Garden at Cuyamaca College. The Water Conservation Garden has nearly five acres of displays that showcase water conservation through a series of beautiful themed gardens, such as a native plant garden and a vegetable garden, as well as how-to displays such as mulch and irrigation exhibits. Admission is free, and the Garden can be viewed on a self-guided tour, or through one of our programs.

Fish shocking uses an "electric seine" stretched across the river and pulled upstream just like a regular seine. Instead of a net hanging down between the seiners, electrodes dangling down, which shock the fish temporarily. Staff dip nets and gather fish for identification, counting and weighing before placing them back in the river. Fish shocking is an important tool in measuring the health of our rivers and streams.
