I don't know exactly what happened, but there was some very brief sparring and I suppose they both realized the catch had been lost. I didn't know that fish bounced.

 

For the record, this entire sequence (catch to drop) took place over a span of 8 seconds.

I was hoping for an in-flight battle for the catch but, before real engagement took place, the fish was dropped.
