US Route 1 runs along the top of the dam completed in 1928
these were taken on an earlier visit, when there was still a bit of Fall color behind the dam
It was slow this morning, so I took a walk down the path to Octowaro Creek. I saw 6 adults and 1 juvenile.
During a recent visit to Maryland I was able to capture this eagle in take-off mode at the Conowingo Dam. He was part of a breeding pair that had a nest nearby. Shortly after take-off he swooped down in front of the dam and caught a pigeon in mid-flight; brought it back to perch…immediately disassembling the prey feathers flying all around. It wasn’t long before his mate spotted him, letting out some piercing calls. I am happy to report he did the right thing and delivered what was left of the pigeon to the nest.
Amazing thing was that this all unfolded in a matter of minutes – I had been standing observing a few eagles below the dam (with not much happening) for a couple hours and was just returning. I saw some photographers looking up at this eagle perched in the tree…that went on for about fifteen minutes as the sun was going down, he just keep turning his head side to side (almost completely around at times) searching for something. Suddenly he took off and it was all over in less than a minute…

E/B Conrail E33's #4608 and #4603 with an approach clear at C96 on the Port Road Branch in Conowingo, MD on 10-20-79.
No eagles en mass yet at Conowingo. Practiced with the morning fly-by's there last weekend. Liked the warm morning tones under the clouds and this guy skimming along the Susquehanna. I was pretty impressed with the 1.4TC and the 300mm for tracking and shooting this bird zipping along the water.
Now just need some eagles to show up ;)
This photographer made his way down the steep slope to the river's edge for a lower view in the early morning sunlight. He certainly has an impressive setup there ... then he needs to carry back up the 40 foot slope.
Conowingo Dam, Maryland
Sadly, what will probably be our last trip for some time was extremely unproductive; there were only two eagles that attempted to catch a fish, and no photo was as sharp as I'd really like. :(
My appreciation and thanks to all of you for your comments awards and faves.
