The 2024 Connections Leadership Conference was held 15-16 November at the Great Wolf Lodge in Traverse City, MI. This was the first time since 2019 the event was hosted away from the Central Michigan University Campus.

For my scholars program, we were placed into "Connection Teams" on the very first night of being at OSU, and throughout the year we do many community service projects with our team. Here, we were simply painting pottery, but I took a selfie to acknowledge how grateful I am to have formed friendships with a random group of people, that I might not have if not for these Connection Teams. Doing service together has especially bonded us together, as we go through shared experiences and projects.

The Legacy of Taste is an awards ceremony started in 2008 by Tsingtao Beer as a means to build more connections with their (Chinese) restaurant clientele. I guess the best way to describe it would be like ‘The Oscars for Chinese Restaurants’. This is the second year I’ve been lucky enough to head down - seeing interesting things and meeting interesting people and taking shitloads of pictures of it as I go along. To quote their PR: "The Legacy of Taste judging panel consists of Michelin Star Chinese chefs, TV chefs, Chinese cookery authors and experts in the UK and Chinese food industry." I took some photos of their staff photographer taking photos because i’m proper fuckin’ meta like.
Anyway, LoT works on a tiered system of Pagodas (as in the tower that also has tiers). These are awards a bit like stars (dare I say Michelin stars?) 1 is good, 2 is better 3 is very better…nobody has a 4 yet. 44 restaurants in the UK have such an award. Anyway, this year saw Hakkasan Hanway Place and Baker Street’s Royal China Club each scoop a 3-tier Pagoda - which I assume they’re very happy about. I don’t think Hakkasan particularly care for Tasting Britain but we went to Royal China on Baker street for Chinese New Year this year and were pretty impressed by the whole thing. Hopefully they invite me to the next year’s ceremony so that I can score a hat trick and win my own Pagoda for 'most awkward looking attendee in a suit' or 'took the most pictures of food in the night' or something. The hell am I doing with my life anyway?
