Likely the pigweed flea beetle. I thought these beetles were quite pretty, and I watched and took a few photos through the whole few minutes of their "courtship." I'm told they are pigweed flea beetles, Disonycha glabrata.
The red-collared beetle at left is the female; their bodies (at least the undersides) are also the same colors you see behind their heads. The female started on the leaves of the plant and moved to the flower. I first saw the male when he was a few feet away, but he made his way to the flower and crawled onto it, then across it. He moved to the leaves next to her, then he flew onto the same flower she is on, behind her. From there he jumped or flew onto her back, made a connection with a tube-like genital apparatus, and they flew away together. Southern Indiana.
It made me curious what kind of communications they might be doing that I could not monitor, scent or sound for example. I saw no sign the female was (or was not) interested; the male made all the visible moves. Apparently they are called "flea" beetles because they are very good jumpers and they have long rear legs.

The pigs return to downtown Cincinnati this summer with a new “tail” just in time for the 2012 World Choir Games! Some 100 swine, decorated by Cincinnati’s most talented artists, will be hogging the streets from May through September. The Big Pig Gig: Do Re Wee is a production of ArtWorks in partnership with C-Change Class VI.
The original Big Pig Gig project, which was first produced by ArtWorks in 2000, featured 425 pigs that garnered national and international media attention, and raised an estimated $170 million in business sales and spurred job salaries.
Art Works Cincinnati is an award-winning non-profit that empowers and inspires the creative community to transform our everyday environments through employment, apprenticeships, education, community partnerships, and civic engagement. Since 1996, ArtWorks has employed more than 2,500 youth and 500 professional artists. Besides the Big Pig Gig in 2000, ArtWorks has presented numerous other great public art projects from Murals to Bombshells.
This project is to highlight the importance of people's connections. We emit a lot of noise in the world, but at at some point we make that connection with someone that drowns out the rest of it.
