All Saints Church, Wighton was one of several churches which I returned to during my recent visit to North Norfolk with my elderly mother. Although we have no family connections with this particular church she was impressed by the immense size of Wighton and the light and airy atmosphere created by its huge mid-15th century Perpendicular windows.

The present Wighton building dates to about 1450 but is aligned on a slender 14th century tower of a previous (smaller) church. This 14th century tower spectacularly collapsed in 1965 and was not rebuilt until 1975 thanks to the generosity of a Canadian who had traced his family history to Wighton and who donated $100,000 towards the cost of the rebuilding.

See: www.flickr.com/photos/barryslemmings/265431340/ for a fuller account of the church history.

Of particular interest on the second visit were the 14 Victorian stained glass panels which are the subject of a current restoration appeal by Wighton church. All were once thought to be the work of Joseph Grant who, in 1856, inserted the figure of St.Paul during a restoration. However 12 of the others may actually be the work of James Zobel, a Bavarian immigrant, who was working at Yarington near Norwich during this time. It is known that Zobel made up 12 Apostles for the Great Exhibition in the Crystal Palace, in 1851, but he was bitterly disappointed when they returned to him unsold.

The dimensions of Zobel's panels matches 12 of Wighton's exactly so it appears that, some five years later, Zobel may have sold them to Grant for insertion at Wighton. The church now has 14 panels and it appears that Grant made up two more (at the west end) which differ in style and dimensions.

Random idea this year: let's put up a white board and have people attach notes to connect on things like going out to dinner, social events, and of course, skiing.

An amalgamation of ideas between a few people, so low tech it hurts, and totally working. I love it when a half-assed idea comes together so nicely.

An AT&T lineman in a bucket truck pulled up to a pole to work on the telephone lines.

My parent's internet connection was interrupted for the last few days from work on the lines on Main Street and these phone lines are very old. Hopefully my parents can get their internet connection restored.

Random Fact: The telephone service provider for the Southeastern United States prior to AT&T's complete takeover was BellSouth, LLC. BellSouth was a subsidiary of AT&T Corporation that was based in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Utah State Office of Education Title VII Program in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Red Butte Garden, the Urban Indian Center and the Utah Natural History Museum hosted the second annual of the Earth Connections Camp, American Indian Nature Camp on June 18.

The camp’s goal is to reconnect urban American Indian youth with their natural world and cultural heritage, organizers said.

The 30 campers, divided into two groups, spent the day at Red Butte Garden learning about American Indian traditions, history, arts and craft, storytelling and nutrition.

American Indian educators and specialists from the various partners led each of the learning stations.

Juan Palma, BLM Utah state director, was the keynote speaker. He shared his story of growing up in a family of migrant workers and the difference education made in his life.

Other activities during the day-long camp included building solar toys and constructing dams with the assistance of Bureau of Reclamation staff.

“I was so impressed with the instructors, volunteers, and especially the campers,” said Jeanette Shackelford, BLM Utah State Youth Program Lead. “The kids were respectful and attentive, and I personally learned a lot from listening to the different sessions.”

Organizers hope to continue to collaborate and expand the day-camp to have more students attend.

The Crescent City Connection fading into the distance as we move downriver. I say this, but the lights of the bridge were visible for almost 2 hours as we went downriver. So it wasnt doing much fading.

Adventures in Seeing workshop - CONNECTIONS

Very obvious to see the connection here, there isn't one single day where I don't marvel at how connected out two special ones are.

But really - it is a connection of three..... Me, the photographer, is always there as well. They accept me showing up with the camera, making odd clicking noises while they clean each other, play with each other or have a little nap. They quickly acknowledge me, and get back to their important business. Such a pleasure to watch :-)

Community members and leaders from the Kingston-Galloway/Orton Park neighborhood meet with their university counterparts at the second Community Connections Leadership Forum.

The forum was designed to foster collaborations between UTSC and Scarborough communities. It brought UTSC faculty, administrators and students together with community leaders to discuss ways of partnering on research and community development projects.
