Notes: Printed on the back is: "Bierstadt Brothers, Photographers, China Hall, 39 Purchase Street, New Bedford, Mass." Charles and Edward Bierstadt were born at Solingen, Prussia, a son of Henry Bierstadt. They were the brothers of the landscape painter Albert Bierstadt. They were educated in the national schools of his native town and New Bedford, Massachusetts, whence their parents removed in 1831. Charles and Edward had a woodworking shop together at 147 North Water St., where they specialized in “plain and fancy turning and sawing.” Their shop burned in 1859. At about the same time, Albert Bierstadt, their brother, who had already established himself as an artist, returned from a trip to the Rocky Mountains, where he had, among other things, taken landscape photographs. Albert helped Charles and Edward to establish “Bierstadt Brothers Photographic Gallery.” In 1860, Albert took Charles and Edward on a trip to the White Mountains in New Hampshire, where they took landscape photographs which they later printed and sold. In 1863 Charles Bierstadt removed his business to Niagara Falls, New York where he carried it on with great success. He was an expert in stereoscopic views and had in connection with his manufactory a large bazaar where his views and many relics and curios were displayed to advantage. In 1870 he visited California and photographed Yosemite. He died in Niagara Falls in 1903. Edward Bierstadt was hired by William West Durant to take a series of photos for an advertising brochure entitled The Adirondacks, Artotype Views Among the Mountains and Lakes of the North Woods to publicize Blue Mountain Lake and Raquette Lake in the Adirondacks.

Bierstadt held an 1876 patent for an improvement to the stereoscope. He died in New York City on June 15, 1906

Despite a golden sunrise this morning, Valentines Day 14 February 2012 will be a black day for some.

Here the Police have closed the slip road to the A46.

From a local news website:

A driver has died after a crash on the A46 in Leicestershire this morning.

The crash involved three vehicles. The driver of one of the vehicles received fatal injuries and died at the scene. One man has been taken to the Leicester Royal Infirmary and his injuries are not believed to be serious. The crash was close to the junction with the A6 turn for Wanlip and was reported to police at about 6.45am. Two men, aged 21 and 24, have been arrested in connection with the incident. Police are warning drivers to avoid the route which will be closed this morning while investigations take place.

Let's be careful out there.
