*Verbindung hergestellt* (Connection Established) is a project in which 21 pupils from Vorchdorf Elementary School, asylum seekers living in that town, and the Ars Electronica Center Linz jointly produced an exhibition. Working together, the participants got acquainted with one another as a way of reducing or eliminating fears or feelings of insecurity that might exist among them. Plus the resulting public exhibition is a great way to reach lots of other local residents and help them get to know asylum seekers living in their midst.

"Why are there so many songs about rainbows and what's on the other side?
Rainbows are visions, but only illusions, and rainbows have nothing to hide.
So we've been told and some choose to believe it,
I know they're wrong wait and see.
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection.
The lovers, the dreamers and me.
Who said that wishes would be heard and answered when wished on the morning star?
Someone thought of that and someone believed it,
Look what it's done so far.
What's so amazing that keeps us stargazing and what do we think we might see?
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection,
The lovers, the dreamers and me,
All of us under its spell,
We know that it's probably magic.
Have you been half asleep and have you heard voices?
I've heard them calling my name.
Is this the sweet sound that calls the young sailors,
the voice might be one and the same.
I've heard it too many times to ignore it,
It's something that I'm supposed to be.
Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection, the lovers, the dreamers...
and me."
- lyrics by the Carpenters, vocals performed live by Kermit the frog.
Yesterday I discovered a small truth. Yesterday I discovered one of the things that is wrong about this place, this country. Perhaps even this world.
I drove past a park where two kids were playing. As I idled, waiting for God knows what, I saw what they were doing. They were throwing rocks at pigeons, a few of which were walking around on the grass. Grey feathers. They had obviously hit one. There it was, broken wing. Red on grey. As it hobbled around, they pursued it gleefully, continuing to throw stones.
I should have intervened. I remained, too horrified to move, in my car. Eventually, the hooting behind me got through the ringing noise of blood in my ears. I drove away, struggling to breathe.
And the thing I discovered? The thing that is wrong? Quite simple: no respect for life.
How do we love in a world that is like that?
How do we not?
One of the ways we processed the individual pieces we brought into a larger group collective was to represent our topics on wood chips, and then we worked to build a map. At this point in the process, most of the pieces are in place, but we have yet to really start into the connections. Not only was this a great thinking task, but it also let folks go all artistic, too! Each participant is also represented in the map by a hand-painted stone.
