The Brooklyn Bridge is a hybrid cable-stayed/suspension bridge in New York City. It connects the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn, spanning the East River. The Brooklyn Bridge has a main span of 1,595.5 feet (486.3 m) and a height of 133 ft (40.5 m) above Mean High Water.[b] It is one of the oldest roadway bridges in the United States and was the world's first steel-wire suspension bridge, as well as the first fixed crossing across the East River.
The Brooklyn Bridge started construction in 1869 and was completed fourteen years later in 1883. It was originally called the New York and Brooklyn Bridge and the East River Bridge, but it was later dubbed the Brooklyn Bridge. However, it was not named as such until the city government passed a law to that effect in 1915. Over the years, the Brooklyn Bridge has undergone several reconfigurations; it formerly carried horse-drawn vehicles and elevated railway lines, but now carries vehicular, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic. Commercial vehicles are banned from the bridge.
Since opening, the Brooklyn Bridge has become an icon of New York City. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964 and a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1972. The Brooklyn Bridge is also a New York City designated landmark.
De in 1883 gebouwde Brooklyn Bridge is een hangbrug in New York in de Verenigde Staten. Ze gaat over de East River en verbindt Brooklyn met Lower Manhattan, evenals de Manhattan Bridge. De architecten waren John Roebling en zijn zoon Washington Roebling. De vrouw van Washington, Emily Warren Roebling, nam de feitelijke leiding over het afbouwen van de brug op zich toen haar man daartoe niet meer in staat was.
De brug is 1825 meter lang, en de grootste overspanning is 486 meter. Daardoor had de brug tot de bouw van de Williamsburg bridge in 1903 de langste overspanning ter wereld. In 2008 was het de 64e hangbrug ter wereld qua overspanning.
Tijdens de bouw van de brug zijn 27 arbeiders gestorven door een val van de kabels en ten gevolge van de caissonziekte door het werk aan de pylonen onder de waterspiegel.
Door het voltooien van de brug en door zijn recordlengte ontstond een nieuwe opvatting over de stedelijke schaal van New York. In de brug wordt de tegenstelling duidelijk tussen de oude materialen en de nieuwe materialen van het nieuwe tijdperk, de massieve dragers en de 'fijne' bekabeling die het wegdek draagt.
Op de Brooklyn Bridge zit ook een stadszegel van Nederlandse afkomst die dateert uit 1834 waar op te lezen is "Eendraght Maakt Magt" (Eendracht maakt macht).

From your house to my house and back again , this green box is the neighbourhood phone hub that supplies my internet connection . Inside are mechanical switches and relays and maybe fans and heaters ( whirring sounds can be heard) and it's where the phone repair guy heads if my service goes out . I walk past this daily , and it never fails to amaze me that this is how and where i connect to Flickr and the whole wide world .
I have photographed this many times , but have only posted one other shot .

A trip to London at the weekend for some photography inspiration. Really enjoyed wandering Elephant & Castle, which provided perfect backdrops for street photography - only difficulty was the 4 lanes of traffic between me and the subject but managed to get lucky quite a few times.

Saturday 13th August 2016 was the last day for First Bus operations out of Musselburgh and North Berwick depots before a new subsidy of Lothian Buses known as East Coast Buses commences on Sunday 14th August 2016.
East Coast Buses are introducing services 107 between Edinburgh and Dunbar via Haddington, services 124/X24 between Edinburgh and North Berwick via Aberlady - Gullane and also school services 125/126 and 127.
Today East Coast Buses held a roadshow for local residents to come and get details of their brand new bus service. Roadshows were held in Dunbar (9am - 11.30am), Haddington (12pm - 3pm) and North Berwick (10am - 4pm).
Haddington saw vehicle 10105 come along for the ride and looks very smart in its new East Coast Buses livery. 13th August 2016.
