His head and neck are fully fluffed as seen in courtship. However, there wasn't a Hooded merganser hen nearby; perhaps he's practicing for the big day.

I drove past often in the last 2-3 years, took some pictures and almost always I see this funny bird. Always in the same place (Yellow Bal) and always with open wings. It looks like he is conducting and enjoying the fantastic autumn/winter silence ...

Almost back to the power plant with a fresh load of coal, ESWR's trio of SD40s ease down to drop off the conductor so he can line the switch at Escalante Junction.

The conductor surrounded by steam from the train at Haworth.

For a photo story of my visit:

Wuthering Heights - a visit to Haworth

A train conductor frowning disapprovingly at me for standing in a non-approved spot and taking photos. I was waved peremptorily away, apparently for my safety.

Bill, a museum volunteer, was the conductor during our ride on the Snoqualmie Train. The Train is part of the Northwest Railroad Musuem in Snoqualmie, WA.

CN A435 has stopped at Brantford to allow the conductor to make their cut with CN 2417 leading. On their arrival it was fully cloudy but a tiny sun pocket gave me just enough light at the west end of the yard.

This Arctic Skua reminded me of the conductor of an orchestra. He had been bathing in a fresh water pool and was just flapping himself dry. This photo also shows the white wing flashes and deep barrel chest characteristic of this species. In summer they don't catch their own food like most seabirds, but mug other seabirds for food they are carrying back in their crops. When chased panicking seabirds will regurgitate their last meal and the skua will gather it all in mid air with astonishing dexterity. I photographed this one on St Kilda where I had another encounter with a breeding Arctic Skua. When I walked high on the hill one Skua called at me to signal its displeasure as it had a chick somewhere nearby. I didn't want to disturb it so headed back down and as soon as I turned my back I felt a rush of air as it divebombed me. This one wouldn't attack while I was watching so I then had to walk backwards out of its territory. But one bird on Svalbard wasn't so timid and physically struck me as I was taking a photograph of it charging me. One final thing; Skuas have webbed feet like most seabirds but there is an optical illusion going on here that makes the feet look unwebbed. That is because the webs were almost submerged, but the "middle toe" is a reflection of the leg making the toes look normal.

Yes, I know street photographers are supposed to be stealth and blend into the crowd, but I tend to interact with the population when the opportunity arises.

The conductor of A490 grabs orders off the hook at JB Tower as he heads for Kirk with a pair of endangered C40-8s. These units have been working their way south for storage after leaving the Iron Range of upper Minnesota. Definitely a scene that’ll never happen again.

Niclas is one of the conductors driving the beautiful steam train. The museum train BR 64 419 of the GVS - Railway Vehicle Preservation Society on it's last drive for this year. More pictures soon. www.ges-ev.de/

A recently added art statue nest to the historic Sheldon Theatre. I took several different pics of this statue and will probably post others because they show different sides of it. Notice that he is wearing short pants and sneakers.

By the way, the musical instruments are playable and the 'hammers' are hanging there to be used. Beautiful tones.

RKO_8510. I went out to photograph some European Bittern this morning and returned with some shots of a swan!

I took this shot using a pre-set camera button, set for unexpected actions: 1/4000 | F6 | ISO160 | 480mm.

I'm very pleased with the result.

While waiting for my conductor to finish lacing up our outbound, this passenger extra rolled around the bend and by us at Neenah, bound for Shops Yard. I don't believe I inquired to what the special was for. The Wisconsin Central sure was a class act.
