Stutthof was the first German Nazi concentration camp built outside of 1937 German borders and the last camp liberated by the Allies, on May 9, 1945. More than 85,000 victims died in the camp out of as many as 110,000 people deported there.

Dachau Concentration Camp in Dachau, Germany, was the first stop of our 2013 Europe trip. I've read tons of biographies, autobiographies, and other accounts of WWII survivors and victims and knew that going to Dachau would be an overwhelming experience. The horrors that these prisoners went through were unimaginable, and it fills me with anger when people have the audacity to say that it didn't happen. I was amazed at how close the concentration camp was to so many other buildings. It is documented that 32,000 people were murdered at Dachau in addition to the countless undocumented murders.

Gross-Rosen was a German concentration camp located south of the town of Gross-Rosen (Rogozhnica) in Lower Silesia (today Poland). Gross-Rosen was established in the summer of 1940 as a satellite labor camp of the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. On May 1, 1941 Gross-Rosen became an independent camp; it functioned as such until its evacuation in February 1945. Altogether, 125,000 prisoners passed through Gross-Rosen; 40,000 perished.
At the beginning, prisoners were forced to work at constructing the camp and in the nearby granite quarry, which was owned by the SS German Earth and Stone Works (SS-Deutsche Erd- und Steinwerke GmbH). However, as the Germans' need for armaments grew, Gross-Rosen also grew: arms factories were built, 70 sub-camps (satellite camps) were ultimately added, and the number of prisoners swelled. Jews made up the largest group of inmates.
One of these will be a part of my cocncentration section series for AP. Any feedback/advice/critism would be great, because I'm not sure which one I like more/which one tells a better story.

The thesis of my portfolio examines and nuances the relationship between “separate but equal,” symmetry, and balance. While on a recent a road trip to Hearst Castle the Supreme Court began hearing oral arguments over marriage equality. Later, as I was touring the mansion, I was struck by the Renaissance symmetry of the façade and the interior spaces. Hence, this body of work is an aesthetic response and investigation that seeks to create situations where similar entities attempt to be “equal.”

The thesis of my Concentration is based in self-portraiture, the varying ways an individual “sees” oneself over time, and how this affects representation. Changing physical traits will noticeably affect representation of one’s self over time, however this pales when compared to the remodeling of framing devices in locating one’s artistic voice. A recurring motif is the tension between stasis and change, and how even iterations of a repetitive printmaking process can reveal idiosyncrasies.

This concentration correlates to the pandemic and the struggles it causes in our everyday lives. Many people are stocking up and hoarding supplies leaving many unable to get their necessities. The virus prevents us from getting our basic needs such as something like toilet paper and I wanted to portray that. I had my model looking down at the empty shelves signifying that they are sad and in distress. In order to achieve the look I wanted I shot at a high iso to get my photo grainy, lowered the exposure, and brought up the blues to have a cold and apocalyptic feel.
