50th Anniversary for the Department of Computer Science

The Colossus machines were electronic computing devices used by British codebreakers to read encrypted German messages during World War II. These were the world's first programmable, digital, electronic, computing devices. They used vacuum tubes (thermionic valves) to perform the calculations.

Construction of a fully-functional replica of a Colossus Mark II has been undertaken by a team led by Tony Sale. In spite of the blueprints and hardware being destroyed, a surprising amount of material survived, mainly in engineers' notebooks, but a considerable amount of it in the US.

The reconstruction is on display, in the historically correct place for Colossus No. 9, in H Block Bletchley Park Museum in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire.

Sadly Tony Sale passed away on 30th August 2011, but he leaves behind a lasting memory of the work carried out at Bletchley Park during the days of World War II.

A lot of effort has gone into checking out the wiring and studying what should go into each location. After looking at the length of the wires a mount for the computer was built onto the door brace that runs up to the firewall. At first I was tempted to conceal the wires but decided to run them across the firewall to make any needed maintenance easier to do.

When my Raspberry Pi arrived last week, my first impression was just how small it was. Yes, I'd seen the photos and video clips, but it doesn't really prepare you for seeing and holding a real Pi - it's tiny, about the size of a credit card... and this is a functioning computer!

I've placed it here on top of my Eee 701SD netbook, which is no hulking beast of a computer itself :-)

Now this must be a cool shop... and safe... hopefully. Only in Sprinkbok land - this is Africa, we're on the wild side!
