What to do when you lose power for 2 days and it's too damn hot outside? Well, you grab your camera, and the hardly used 70-300mm lens, new reflector and daughter's toys or old computer parts and practice on macro photos - until the camera battery dies.

The 1,83 GHz Intel iMac is a pain to open and upgrade. Took me at least one hour to tear away all the tape and foil to access the harddrive. This is the iMac with the LCD screen taken out. Serial ATA drive - now 1 Terabyte - in the middle.
The hard drive in Jen's 17" iMac G5 (ALS) died, so I ordered a replacement from Other World Computing. Unfortunately, I ordered the wrong interface for the 320GB 3.5" Seagate drive. I ordered the top drive (SATA), and needed the bottom interface (SATA II?).
So you can see the right arm attached in place with the fiber optic cable swooping around the back, along with the arm ribbon cable in place. You can kinda see the tail sticking out of the back there as well. Please note the wires from the top, it's a stripped phone wire that's been curled (which has come uncurled since I did this) they are in the in/out sockets of the modem header using standard rj-11 plugs

This is the back section of a computer. These are several of the plugs that you will see if you look at your machine. Roll over each plug to see a short description.
The Information Technology Department creatively used discarded computer parts to celebrate the season (one of my coworkers said, "Oh, so that's why our computers don't work, the parts are all on the wall!").

Today, a Dell certified tech came to replace the LCD and graphics card in my laptop. It's working beautifully...for a few minutes at a time.
The good news: The while lines and green boxes are gone.
The bad news: Every few minutes, EVERYTHING is gone.
Sigh.
Fn+F8 brings the display back. A little digging online told me something Dell telephone tech support couldn't figure out... it's probably a faulty screen inverter. (Note: They first suggested it might be a virus--quite a coincidence, given that a tech was out here today replacing components--then said they'd send out a third graphics card. They also suggested I send my machine to their depot--you know, my machine with the next day, on site service. The supervisor couldn't figure out why that suggestion made me unhappy.)
I am on hold with tech support at the moment to see about a new inverter board.
An update will surely follow.
