A friendly, fast session with Steve McCalmont, CEO of Avior Computing, Nashua NH

A 150MHz CPU upgrade built by the first Apple licensed clonebuilder Power Computing Corporation from Texas. They were so successfull in the high-end market - they managed a 225MHz CPU when Apple didn't deliver something similar - that Apple had to sue them and eventually buy them (and their license) out for $100 million.

I actually sold some of those Power Computing models back in the day. Their low-end computers were quite crappy, but the later faster (200MHz) towers were nice computers.

Their last advert (1997) read: "I think we were just too different..."

Each year, Dartmouth asks staff members from across campus to nominate peers who stand out as exemplars of dedication to the College community for The Lone Pine Excellence Awards. Congratulations to Thayer Computing Services for winning "The Innovation Award"!

"The team has been recognized for years for always going above and beyond, but this year, the stakes were significantly higher," says Alexis Abramson, dean of Thayer. "Within the two weeks prior to spring term, this team worked non-stop to help us all figure out how best to pivot to remote learning. The Thayer Computing Services team became a valuable resource for all of Dartmouth, and they selflessly and tirelessly helped others navigate the complexities of potential technology solutions. Even more over the past three terms, they have met with each faculty member individually — most of them multiple times — to consult on options for teaching remotely and to help them arrive at the best solution in consideration of the needs of the course and the preferences of the faculty member."

The winning team includes (pictured l to r) Mark Franklin, director of Computing Services; Jared Benedict, associate director of Innovation & Educational Technology; Ben Servoz, senior systems engineer; Richard Crowley, systems administrator; Matt Dailey, senior systems engineer; Zack Bennis, user support manager; Daniel Safford, user support analyst; Jane Reynolds, user support analyst; and David Townsend, user support analyst.

Yes, that's a crowbar in his hands. He's still setting up the initial state, and I think he's adjusting the hight of the stack. Those bronze stacks are actually stacks of digit rotors 31 or 32 decimal precision high. During operation the entire stack goes up and down, I think to perform a carry operation. It's impressive as hell.

In eight of Kenya's most impoverished areas, Cisco Systems, Inveneo, and its Certified ICT Partners, are bringing connectivity and information access to underserved areas through Community Knowledge Centers (CKCs) in partnership with the Clinton Global Initiative.
