We popped through into another hall that now housed three derelict JOY compressors but had obviously house one big turbine at some point. Judging by the labelling around the place it was a turbo generator for electricity production in this part..

In this engine air admitted to the centre of the compressor disk is flung outwards by centrifugal force , compressing it for later mixing with fuel and burning.
This compressor facility provided the miners in the Cossack Tunnel with compressed air to operate their tools and machinery.
White Knob Mining District
Significant copper deposits were first discovered in the White Knob Mountains in 1879 and by 1884, the White Knob Area was being developed into one of the largest copper producers in Idaho. The tram towers here, from the early 1900s, were part of an aerial tram system in the White Knob Mining District used to carry ore over four miles down the mountain to the smelter and blast furnaces from the Empire Mine to the railroad. This historic mining complex contains a railroad grade, industrial mining buildings and features, adits and ruins of miner’s residences. Recent work has restored the tram towers and railroad trestle.
I decided to add a compressor to the engine as it shows clearly in the prototype photo I'm working from. Also- last winter I was making what I could from material on hand before making a purchase specifically for this engine, and this was a fun little project.
I scaled down the model shown in the New Shay book and simplified it a little. it mounts under the front corner of the cab on the left side of the engine.
The MLS gasket connects the exhaust side steam holes with the main water jacket so only the intake side steam holes needed to be drilled in the new heads.The tapered inner diameter fixed size ring compressor is the only way to go for easy piston installation,with the thin oil rings.

Why all the marks on the piston?,it's just my way to verify proper ring gap alignment per.Mahle instruction,so I don't have to question myself after the piston is in the hole.
