The African bush elephant (Loxodonta africana), also known as the African savanna elephant, is the largest living terrestrial animal with bulls reaching a shoulder height of up to 4 m (13 ft). Both sexes have tusks, which erupt when they are 1–3 years old and grow throughout life.

It is distributed across 37 African countries and inhabits forests, grasslands and woodlands, wetlands and agricultural land. It is a social mammal, traveling in herds composed of cows and their offspring. Adult bulls usually live alone or in small bachelor groups. It is a herbivore, feeding on grasses, creepers, herbs, leaves and bark.

Since 2004, it has been listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. It is threatened foremost by habitat destruction, and in parts of its range also by poaching for meat and ivory.

They can weigh 7 t (7.7 short tons). The heaviest male on record weighed 10.4 t (11.5 short tons) and was shot in 1974 in Angola. Females are much smaller at about 2.2–2.6 m (7.2–8.5 ft) tall at the shoulder and up to 4 t (4.4 short tons) in weight.

Elephants attain their maximum stature when they complete the fusion of long-bone epiphyses, occurring in males around the age of 40 and females around the age of 25. – Wikipedia

This photo is composed by two images shot in the same day/time/place but with two different cameras:

- A99 for the foreground and mountains

- Nex-5R for the sky and stars

Some notes about this photo:

- the red sky is due to a longer exposure on the clouds and light pollution

- the tail of the stars is short, because you can decide its length in the camera app

- on the mountain on the left there's a repeater's tower with a flashing light

- both cameras were alligned on the same tripod at the same focal distance

- this village is called Capestrano located in one of the most beautiful places in Abruzzo region (Italy), it is situated few kilometers from the Gran Sasso. You can find it in some other pictures in one of my albums called "Abruzzo" or "Italy"

Photoshop Manipulation, mein erstes Composing..

Like every year, I played something in Photoshop for Halloween this year.

Strobists Info:

A Yongnuo YN685 in a SMDV Speedbox almost directly from above. Released with Yongnuo remote releases. This applies to two pictures: once the normal portrait and once I photographed a decorative skeleton in the same way.

Since the look of the decorative skeleton fit, I was able to place the bones over the face without any problems.

An animated construct composed of "living" water, the gavohkah can and do exist on their own, but are more commonly encountered serving those skilled enough to create them through carefully honed elemental powers. On land, a gavohkah is quite clumsy. In the water, they are often more formidable than their creators!

Nome: Nebulosa da Águia, NGC 6611, Messier 16

Tipo: Aglomerado aberto estelar com nebulosidade

Distância: aprox. 7.000 anos-luz

Magnitude Aparente: 6,4

Name: Eagle Nebula, NGC 6611, Messier 16

Type: Open cluster with nebulosity

Distance: near 7,000 light-years

Apparent magnitude: 6.4

Constellation: Serpens Cauda [1]

The Eagle Nebula Messier 16 (M16) is a conspicuous region of active star formation, situated in Serpens Cauda. The starforming nebula, a giant cloud of interstellar gas and dust, has already created a considerable cluster of young stars. The cluster is also referred to as NGC 6611, the nebula as IC 4703. The discoverer, Philippe Loys de Chéseaux, describes only the cluster when recording his 1745-1746 discovery. Charles Messier, on his independent rediscovery of June 3, 1764, mentions that these stars appeared "enmeshed in a faint glow", probably suggestions of the nebula.[1]

This stellar swarm is only about 5.5 million years old (according to the Sky Catalog 2000 and Götz) with star formation still active in the Eagle Nebula; this results in the presence of very hot young stars of spectral type O6. The cluster has a linear extension of about 15 light years. The nebula extends much farther out, to a diameter of over 30', corresponding to a linear size of about 70x55 light years. [1]

The highlights of this nebula don't stop here. We found in this nebula the famous "Pillars of Creation", structures similar to stalagmites situated in center of image. This region was target of Hubble Space Telescope in 1995 that made incredible images. The columns of pillars are composed of hidrogen and dust, that act like incubator of new stars. Inside of columns and surface of this structures, the astronomers found nodes, or globules, of dense gas, known as EGG (Evaporating Gaseous Globules). Various stars are being formed inside this globules.[2]

Kokoen 好古園

location : Himeji city , Hyogo prefecture, Japan

This garden, Himeji "Koko-en", was constructed in 1992 to commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of the establishment of Himeji municipality.

Himeji "Koko-en" is composed of nine separate gardens, making use of the exact former site of where "Nishi-Oyashiki" (the lord's west residence) and other samurai houses once existed. The original location was confirmed through seven archeological excavations.

Professor Makoto Nakamura of Kyoto University supervised the planning and designing of this garden.

The name "Koko-en" is derived from "Koko-do" the name of Japan's sixth provincial school founded in 1692 in Himeji by the last Lord of Himeji, Sakai family.

All of the nine separate gardens show the essence of the Edo period. The following are some of the many splendors which can be found here. Among attractions, "Oyasiki-no-niwa", the garden of the lord's house, comes first.

Second , "Cha-no-niwa", the garden of tea, has an elaborate tea house, where you can enjoy an authentic tea ceremony. Next, several mud walls with roof tiles on were built as replicas of original walls located here.

There is also a "Nagaya-Gate" which bestows upon viewers the historical feeling of the Edo period. In addition, from Nagare-no-hiraniwa you can enjoy excellent views of the main keep and the West Bailey of Himeji Castle. Finally strolling through the gardens, you can appreciate beautiful trees and flowers of four seasons, the rapids and waterfalls, and covered walkways built of Japanese cypress.

You can feel history and see natural beauty in this garden. It is an impressive and scenic spot located just west of Himeji Castle.

Generally, an okay object but if you zoom into its center, you will see the so-called "Pillars of Creation", made famous by (much better than my) images made by Hubble.

The Pillars of Creation (Eagle Nebula, or Messier 16) are a stellar nursery, composed of gas and dust slowly eaten away by massive stars. Stars are being born inside the pillars due to the gas compressed into collapse by the powerful winds from the massive star cluster. The pillars are slowly being eroded but continue jutting out into the cleared region. This object lies 7,000 light years from Earth.

A frog is any member of a diverse and largely carnivorous group of short-bodied, tailless amphibians composing the order Anura The oldest fossil "proto-frog" appeared in the early Triassic of Madagascar, but molecular clock dating suggests their origins may extend further back to the Permian, 265 million years ago. Thanks for looking!

Devils Tower (also known as Bear Lodge Butte) is a laccolithic butte composed of igneous rock in the Bear Lodge Mountains (part of the Black Hills) near Hulett and Sundance in Crook County, northeastern Wyoming, above the Belle Fourche River. It rises 1,267 feet above the Belle Fourche River, standing 867 feet from summit to base. The summit is 5,112 feet above sea level. Devils Tower was the first United States National Monument, established on September 24, 1906, by President Theodore Roosevelt. The monument's boundary encloses an area of 1,347 acres. In recent years, about 1% of the monument's 400,000 annual visitors climbed Devils Tower, mostly using traditional climbing techniques. The name Devil's Tower originated in 1875 during an expedition led by Colonel Richard Irving Dodge, when his interpreter reportedly misinterpreted a native name to mean "Bad God's Tower". All information signs in that area use the name "Devils Tower", following a geographic naming standard whereby the apostrophe is omitted. Native American names for the monolith include: "Bear's House" or "Bear's Lodge" (or "Bear's Tipi", "Home of the Bear", "Bear's Lair"; Cheyenne, Lakota Matȟó Thípila, Crow Daxpitcheeaasáao "Home of Bears"), "Aloft on a Rock" (Kiowa), "Tree Rock", "Great Gray Horn", and "Brown Buffalo Horn" (Lakota Ptehé Ǧí). In 2005, a proposal to recognize several Native American ties through the additional designation of the monolith as Bear Lodge National Historic Landmark met with opposition from United States Representative Barbara Cubin, arguing that a "name change will harm the tourist trade and bring economic hardship to area communities". In November 2014, one Arvol Looking Horse again proposed renaming the geographical feature "Bear Lodge", and submitted the request to the United States Board on Geographic Names. A second proposal was submitted to request that the U.S. acknowledge what it described as the "offensive" mistake in keeping the current name and to rename the monument and sacred site Bear Lodge National Historic Landmark. The formal public comment period ended in fall 2015. Local state senator Ogden Driskill opposed the change. The name was not changed. The landscape surrounding Devils Tower is composed mostly of sedimentary rocks. The oldest rocks visible in Devils Tower National Monument were laid down in a shallow sea during the mid- to late-Triassic period, 225 to 195 million years ago. This dark red sandstone and maroon siltstone, interbedded with shale, can be seen along the Belle Fourche River. Oxidation of iron minerals causes the redness of the rocks. This rock layer is known as the Spearfish Formation. Above the Spearfish Formation is a thin band of white gypsum, called the Gypsum Springs Formation. This layer of gypsum was deposited during the Jurassic period, 195 to 136 million years ago. Created as sea levels and climates repeatedly changed, gray-green shales (deposited in low-oxygen environments such as marshes) were interbedded with fine-grained sandstones, limestones, and sometimes thin beds of red mudstone. This composition, called the Stockade Beaver member, is part of the Sundance Formation. The Hulett Sandstone member, also part of the Sundance Formation, is composed of yellow fine-grained sandstone. Resistant to weathering, it forms the nearly vertical cliffs that encircle the Tower. During the Paleocene Epoch, 56 to 66 million years ago, the Rocky Mountains and the Black Hills were uplifted. Magma rose through the crust, intruding into the existing sedimentary rock layers.

This windswept tree in a field in Sonoma county looks like a big bonsai next to a perfect rock. I've noticed it in the past, but only stopped to study it this past week. New green leaves and the green fields add to the look.
