The Burwell War Memorial is located on the Gable End of a private dwelling which was the Nurse's Home and known as Memorial House in the High Street, Burwell. There are 62 names for World War 1 and 24 for World War 2. The Memorial was unveiled 20th February 1921 by Colonel Clayton details to be found in the Cambridgeshire Independent Press 25th February 1921.

Volume 2, Part 3, Page30 - BORTON, Cyprian Edward - Major, Malay States Guides Elder son of the Rev. Neville Borton, vicar of Burwell, co. Cambridge, by his wife Annie Louisa, dau of the late Rev. Edward Heale, Incumbent of All Saints, Jersey. Born Barkly, Griqualand West, South Africa 15th Aug 1879, educated Felsted school and Selwyn College, Cambridge, where he was an undergraduate when the South Africa war broke out, and he obtained a university commission, being gazetted 2nd Lieut, Worcester Regiment 23rd May 1900, promoted Lieutenant 3rd August 1901, transferred to the Indian Army 15th May 1903, promoted Captain 23rd May 1909. Served in the South African War 1900 - 01 (Queens medal with 3 clasps) proceeded to India in March 1902, when for a time he was attached to the Suffolk Regiment, being subsequently appointed to the 129th D.C.O. Baluchis, with which Regiment he served at Karachi, Hong Kong and Ferozepore, was then appointed for three years to the Malay States Guides, with the local rank of Major. He was in command in Penang when the Emd! en visited that place in Oct 1914; went to Aden in early 1915 and was killed in action at Imad, near there, 2nd Aug 1917. Buried at Sheikh Othman.
While at Cambridge he was an ardent oarsman and a keen sportsman in India and South China, sending home many heads and skins from both places. Lieut - Col C.W.B. Lees wrote ''I cannot tell you what his loss means to the Regiment and to me personally. He was one of the finest soldiers I have ever met, with a fund of energy I never got to the end of, and he was just my right hand as regards this Regiment, to me he is irreplacable.'' Unmarried.

BURWELL
SERGT. CHARLES BROWN.—Mrs. Brown, of Burwell, widow of Mr. John Brown, for many years Inspector to the Newmarket Urban Council has received official information of the death in action of her youngest son, Sergt. Charles Brown, of the Bantam Battalion of the Suffolks. Sergt. Brown was 24 years of age last August. He was for 18 months in the office of the Ocean Company in Cambridge, when joined Barclay’s Bank and served with the utmost satisfaction at their Oundle, Leicester, and Uppingham branches of that bank. When the war broke out volunteered, but was rejected being under the standard height. When he learned that his friend, the late Lieut. Tom Blackwell, had joined the Bantam Battalion of the Suflolks, he immediately applied and was accepted. They came home on leave together, both sergeants. Tom Blackwell went to France, but Brown was given home billets, until he told the authorities that he was tired of “cushy” jobs, and wanted real soldiering. So he was sent out to France. He was in the big German attack March 21st of this year, and wrote home: “It will a huge relief to you to know that I have escaped without scratch.” He was in the midst of the German attack April 8th, and in this he was shot through the head and killed instantly. At any rate, such is the information furnished by the O.C. of his company, but in the carnage and confusion there may be an error of identification. Mrs. Brown has had letters of condolence from the directors and officials of Barclay’s Bank; from Mr. Praed, who has charge of the Leicester and Uppingham Banks; and from the Rev. C. J. N. Child (Headmaster the Cambridge County School), all speaking in high terms of praise of her son.

Note: H.M.S. ''Bulwark'' was a London-class battleship built in Devonport Dockyard, Plymouth in 1902. She was one of five pre-Dreadnought battleships laid down in response to France's turn-of-the-century shipbuilding program. One of the first major units fitted with Marconi wireless telegraph, Bulwark served as flagship of the Mediterranean fleet, based at Malta, from 1902 to 1907. Detailed to the Home Fleet, formed as a counterbalance to Germany's North Sea fleet, Bulwark served as divisional flagship until 1911 when she was transferred to the Fifth Battle Squadron of the reserve fleet. Mobilized and fully manned upon the outbreak of World War I, she was assigned to the Channel Fleet, which comprised nineteen pre-Dreadnought battleships. On 26th November 1914, Bulwark was anchored off Sheerness when at 07:53 the ship was ''rent asunder'' by a massive internal explosion caused by the poor storage of cordite charges, some of which were twelve years old. The ship sank instantly, taking with her a full complement of 781 ranks and ratings.

Killed in action 6.2.1917, aged 19, flying an FE.2d, with observer 2/Lt.John Taylor Gibbon (aged 29, ex-Army Service Corps, from Market Lavington, Wilts) also killed. Flying as part of a photographic reconnaissance formation when attacked by German scouts from Jasta 8 east of Moorslede; two 20 Sqn. aircraft shot down. Mrs. Parr has still four sons serving in the Army—William (Cambs), Harold (Dragoon Guards) now in Salonica, Urban (with the Australian Forces) and Charlie (Northamptons) who was wounded in the retreat from Mons.

Note: On 21st September 1944 the Hofuku Maru sailed with Convoy MATA-27 for Takao in Formosa. She was attacked by an American aircraft carrier about 80 miles north of Corregidor, the aircraft carrier’s planes sunk the whole fleet including the Hofuku Maru, not knowing she carried prisoners. The Hofuku Maru was carrying 1,289 prisoners from Manila to Japan, 1,047 were lost including Percy.

The lion has just killed a hunter, who is seen on the ground with the beast on top of him. The hunter has evidently been surprised in the bush, as his unfired gun still lies in front of him. The wild lion and the man’s swarthy complexion and red turban locate the episode to North Africa, where Barbary lions could still be found in the mid-nineteenth century. With his claws planted in the hunter’s bloodied chest, the male lion now guards its prey. The composition is simple, with few elements giving away the action, time, or location. The tones are dark and earthy, with a few brighter dabs of red and blue.
Eugène Delacroix mentions the work in his diary for 29 March 1847: “Yesterday I started working on The Lion and the Dead Man again. I managed to tidy it up so much that I now feel like completing it.” The scene in the picture stems from an expedition Delacroix went on to Morocco in 1832. Similar to many other of the era’s romantic artists, he was fascinated by Oriental and exotic locales. In Morocco he found scenes and images that would feature heavily in his paintings for the rest of his life, not least the clash between wild animals and people, between the forces of nature and civilization – and it is often the former that are victorious in his pictures. In large, colourful paintings from the 1840s and 1850s, lions, tigers, and hunters on horseback fight to the death, but Delacroix himself had probably never seen such scenes in reality, nor even wild animals in their natural habitat. Instead, he used detailed studies of animals in zoos and of the people and material culture of North Africa to create his bloodcurdling pictures.

On 11 June 2022 the new National Museum opened in Oslo. This is the largest museum in the Nordics. The new museum now consists of the collections of the former National Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Norwegian Museum of Decorative Arts and Design.
The new museum has a permanent exhibition of about 6 500 objects. Design, arts and crafts, fine art as well as contemporary art will be exhibited alongside each other. As such, the permanent exhibition highlights interesting connections between different collections that previously have been on show at three different museums. Additionally, audiences will be able to see the most famous paintings by the Norwegian painter Edvard Munch, including The Scream (1893) and Madonna (1894).
The building was designed by Kleihues + Schuwerk Gesellschaft von Architekten, with emphasis on dignity and longevity over sensationalist architecture. Great care was given to achieve a balance with the museum’s surroundings and the existing monuments in the area, such as Oslo City Hall and Akershus Fortress.
The most eye-catching feature of the new museum is the large, illuminated exhibition hall on top of the building. It will be used for temporary exhibitions.
The rooftop terrace offers a unique view of the inner Oslo fjord. The square in front of the main entrance has become an urban meeting place, with benches and a café that invites you in to take a rest.

My Singing Anna 16'' Doll from the Disney Store has been fully deboxed. She is posed standing, supported by a Kaiser doll stand (not included). Photographed in diffuse natural light.
Her outfit consists of a blouse and bodice combo, skirt and boots. She is without the cape and cap of the 12'' Classic Anna doll. The long sleeved partially constructed blouse is made of sheer light blue green organza, and is sewn to the black satin bodice with glittering floral decoration. Her skirt is dark blue satin with floral pattern that appears to be appliques. It is covered in blue glitter, which does shed quite a bit. She has black plastic boots with gold decoration. They have a slit in the black, are easy to take off and put back on, but still fit snugly over her fixed angled feet.
Her torso is translucent blue plastic. Under her chest is the light/motion sensor and the blue LED light. Under her belly is the battery compartment, on the left side of her waist is the on/off switch, and behind her upper back is the sound box, with holes in a heart shaped area for the sound to be emitted. She sings ''For the First Time'' in the voice of actress Kristen Bell. When an object is waved across her chest, or the light dimmed, she starts singing in a loud, clear voice, in a single segment about 30 seconds long. On the left side of her chest there is a blue LED that glows brightly and flickers in time with the song. The rest of her body is the same as the usual 16'' Disney Store singing or talking doll, with ball jointed neck, shoulders and hips, and hinge jointed elbow and knee joints, with fixed wrists and ankles. She can free stand with difficulty, and is unstable in that pose. So the photos of her in standing poses have her supported by a doll stand.
She has rusty red orange hair in dual braids with a white streak in her right braid, and side swept bangs. She has large dark blue green eyes that are glancing to her left. She has light brown freckles over her cheeks and nose. She has thin dark red lips in a slight smirk. She has a pale complexion, but her sister Elsa has a much paler complexion. Her cheeks, nose and middle of her forehead are reddened, to represent her exposure to cold weather. Her head mold appears to be the same as that of the LE Anna 17'' dolls, but her face is painted sightly differently. Edward Heale, Incumbent of All Saints, Jersey. Born Barkly, Griqualand West, South Africa 15th Aug 1879, educated Felsted school and Selwyn College, Cambridge, where he was an undergraduate when the South Africa war broke out, and he obtained a university commission, being gazetted 2nd Lieut, Worcester Regiment 23rd May 1900, promoted Lieutenant 3rd August 1901, transferred to the Indian Army 15th May 1903, promoted Captain 23rd May 1909. Served in the South African War 1900 - 01 (Queens medal with 3 clasps) proceeded to India in March 1902, when for a time he was attached to the Suffolk Regiment, being subsequently appointed to the 129th D.C.O. Baluchis, with which Regiment he served at Karachi, Hong Kong and Ferozepore, was then appointed for three years to the Malay States Guides, with the local rank of Major. BURWELL
SERGT. CHARLES BROWN.—Mrs. Brown, of Burwell, widow of Mr. John Brown, for many years Inspector to the Newmarket Urban Council has received official information of the death in action of her youngest son, Sergt. Charles Brown, of the Bantam Battalion of the Suffolks. Sergt. Brown was 24 years of age last August. He was for 18 months in the office of the Ocean Company in Cambridge, when joined Barclay’s Bank and served with the utmost satisfaction at their Oundle, Leicester, and Uppingham branches of that bank. When the war broke out volunteered, but was rejected being under the standard height. When he learned that his friend, the late Lieut. Tom Blackwell, had joined the Bantam Battalion of the Suflolks, he immediately applied and was accepted. They came home on leave together, both sergeants. Tom Blackwell went to France, but Brown was given home billets, until he told the authorities that he was tired of “cushy” jobs, and wanted real soldiering. So he was sent out to France. He was in the big German attack March 21st of this year, and wrote home: “It will a huge relief to you to know that I have escaped without scratch.” He was in the midst of the German attack April 8th, and in this he was shot through the head and killed instantly. At any rate, such is the information furnished by the O.C. of his company, but in the carnage and confusion there may be an error of identification. Mrs. Brown has had letters of condolence from the directors and officials of Barclay’s Bank; from Mr. Praed, who has charge of the Leicester and Uppingham Banks; and from the Rev. C. J. N. Child (Headmaster the Cambridge County School), all speaking in high terms of praise of her son.

Note: H.M.S. ''Bulwark'' was a London-class battleship built in Devonport Dockyard, Plymouth in 1902. She was one of five pre-Dreadnought battleships laid down in response to France's turn-of-the-century shipbuilding program. One of the first major units fitted with Marconi wireless telegraph, Bulwark served as flagship of the Mediterranean fleet, based at Malta, from 1902 to 1907. Detailed to the Home Fleet, formed as a counterbalance to Germany's North Sea fleet, Bulwark served as divisional flagship until 1911 when she was transferred to the Fifth Battle Squadron of the reserve fleet. Mobilized and fully manned upon the outbreak of World War I, she was assigned to the Channel Fleet, which comprised nineteen pre-Dreadnought battleships. On 26th November 1914, Bulwark was anchored off Sheerness when at 07:53 the ship was ''rent asunder'' by a massive internal explosion caused by the poor storage of cordite charges, some of which were twelve years old. The ship sank instantly, taking with her a full complement of 781 ranks and ratings.

Note: On 21st September 1944 the Hofuku Maru sailed with Convoy MATA-27 for Takao in Formosa. She was attacked by an American aircraft carrier about 80 miles north of Corregidor, the aircraft carrier’s planes sunk the whole fleet including the Hofuku Maru, not knowing she carried prisoners. The Hofuku Maru was carrying 1,289 prisoners from Manila to Japan, 1,047 were lost including Percy.

Edward Heale, Incumbent of All Saints, Jersey. Born Barkly, Griqualand West, South Africa 15th Aug 1879, educated Felsted school and Selwyn College, Cambridge, where he was an undergraduate when the South Africa war broke out, and he obtained a university commission, being gazetted 2nd Lieut, Worcester Regiment 23rd May 1900, promoted Lieutenant 3rd August 1901, transferred to the Indian Army 15th May 1903, promoted Captain 23rd May 1909. Served in the South African War 1900 - 01 (Queens medal with 3 clasps) proceeded to India in March 1902, when for a time he was attached to the Suffolk Regiment, being subsequently appointed to the 129th D.C.O. Baluchis, with which Regiment he served at Karachi, Hong Kong and Ferozepore, was then appointed for three years to the Malay States Guides, with the local rank of Major. He was in command in Penang when the Emd! en visited that place in Oct 1914; went to Aden in early 1915 and was killed in action at Imad, near there, 2nd Aug 1917. Buried at Sheikh Othman.
While at Cambridge he was an ardent oarsman and a keen sportsman in India and South China, sending home many heads and skins from both places. Lieut - Col C.W.B. Lees wrote ''I cannot tell you what his loss means to the Regiment and to me personally. He was one of the finest soldiers I have ever met, with a fund of energy I never got to the end of, and he was just my right hand as regards this Regiment, to me he is irreplacable.'' Unmarried.

BURWELL
SERGT. CHARLES BROWN.—Mrs. Brown, of Burwell, widow of Mr. John Brown, for many years Inspector to the Newmarket Urban Council has received official information of the death in action of her youngest son, Sergt. Charles Brown, of the Bantam Battalion of the Suffolks. Sergt. Brown was 24 years of age last August. He was for 18 months in the office of the Ocean Company in Cambridge, when joined Barclay’s Bank and served with the utmost satisfaction at their Oundle, Leicester, and Uppingham branches of that bank. When the war broke out volunteered, but was rejected being under the standard height. When he learned that his friend, the late Lieut. Tom Blackwell, had joined the Bantam Battalion of the Suflolks, he immediately applied and was accepted. They came home on leave together, both sergeants. Tom Blackwell went to France, but Brown was given home billets, until he told the authorities that he was tired of “cushy” jobs, and wanted real soldiering. So he was sent out to France. He was in the big German attack March 21st of this year, and wrote home: “It will a huge relief to you to know that I have escaped without scratch.” He was in the midst of the German attack April 8th, and in this he was shot through the head and killed instantly. At any rate, such is the information furnished by the O.C. of his company, but in the carnage and confusion there may be an error of identification. Mrs. Brown has had letters of condolence from the directors and officials of Barclay’s Bank; from Mr. Praed, who has charge of the Leicester and Uppingham Banks; and from the Rev. C. J. N. Child (Headmaster the Cambridge County School), all speaking in high terms of praise of her son.

Note: H.M.S. ''Bulwark'' was a London-class battleship built in Devonport Dockyard, Plymouth in 1902. She was one of five pre-Dreadnought battleships laid down in response to France's turn-of-the-century shipbuilding program. One of the first major units fitted with Marconi wireless telegraph, Bulwark served as flagship of the Mediterranean fleet, based at Malta, from 1902 to 1907. Detailed to the Home Fleet, formed as a counterbalance to Germany's North Sea fleet, Bulwark served as divisional flagship until 1911 when she was transferred to the Fifth Battle Squadron of the reserve fleet. Mobilized and fully manned upon the outbreak of World War I, she was assigned to the Channel Fleet, which comprised nineteen pre-Dreadnought battleships. On 26th November 1914, Bulwark was anchored off Sheerness when at 07:53 the ship was ''rent asunder'' by a massive internal explosion caused by the poor storage of cordite charges, some of which were twelve years old. The ship sank instantly, taking with her a full complement of 781 ranks and ratings.

Note: On 21st September 1944 the Hofuku Maru sailed with Convoy MATA-27 for Takao in Formosa. She was attacked by an American aircraft carrier about 80 miles north of Corregidor, the aircraft carrier’s planes sunk the whole fleet including the Hofuku Maru, not knowing she carried prisoners. The Hofuku Maru was carrying 1,289 prisoners from Manila to Japan, 1,047 were lost including Percy.

For my Final project I decided to focus on the uniqueness in every individual. All people were made differently, ranging from body formation to birthmarks and complexion, including acquired deformities such as scars. All people are equal, but at the same time so different in many ways, and all differences should be accepted as its own form of normal and natural beauty.
For my photos, i decided to focus on how all human beings are unique in their own special way. i decided to do this because many people are mistreated, bullied, and even ashamed for the ways that their bodies are different from others. I believe that it is relatable to everyone because everyone sees themselves and sees that they are different than everyone else, but people need to start realizing that we are all equal and also unique in our own different types of ways. My first photo is showing the unique ways people are complected and the natural blemishes on the skin. Freckles are very unique and show a lot of natural beauty in one. My second photo is showing a scar that is very visible for others to see, and it is very unique because scars are not carried by everyone, and there is always a story behind a scar and how it was inflicted. My third photo is showing marks on the body, in this case moles. Some people who have moles on their bodies are self conscious about them and are embarrassed because of them, however, people shouldn't be embarrassed about it because everyone is an individual with their own unique characteristics and having moles is one of them. My Fourth photo is a picture of the way people are made and built. Everyone is built differently, which makes them unique. My fifth and final photo is a picture of a birthmark. Birthmarks make people unique by the fact that they be been with someone since they were born and they come in many different shapes and sizes. The main point of these photos is to explain that no matter what shape, color, size, or what physical flaws we have , we are all unique, but equal as human beings and we stand as one.

Kilmorey Mausoleum (1854)

The 2nd Earl of Kilmorey built this mausoleum in 1854 on a plot he had secured at Brompton Cemetery. The pink and grey Egyptian style mausoleum cost over £30,000 and was moved by the Earl two times before his death at the age of 92 in 1880.
Francis Jack Needham, known by some as ‘Black Jack’ due to his dark complexion, succeeded his father as the Second Earl of Kilmorey in 1832. At various times, he lived in five different houses in Twickenham, including Gordon House, St Margaret’s House and, further towards Hampton, at Orleans House, Cross Deep and Radnor House.
Kilmorey spent much of his early life in Twickenham with his mistress, Priscilla Hoste. Their relationship developed from his friendship with her parents Captain William Hoste and Lady Harriet Walpole. When Captain Hoste died, the Earl became a guardian of the children and in the early 1840s he eloped with Priscilla. A search was mounted but it appeared that they had fled abroad, without trace. After their return to England, their son, Charles, was born at Cross Deep House on the 19th of July, 1844.
When Priscilla became ill in 1851 with a terminal heart condition, Kilmorey began making preparations for her burial and in 1853 wrote to Brompton Cemetery regarding a select plot. It took over a year for the details to be settled and approved by the Home Secretary and cost Kilmorey £1,030 16s 9d.
The architect, Mr. H.E. Kendall, designed the £30,000 mausoleum to fit the circular plot at Brompton Cemetery which measured 1,963 square feet. The Egyptian design is believed to have been derived from a plate in a French book Description de l’Egypte published in 1809. The shape of the building relates to the shrines at the heart of Egyptian Temples – the place where a treasured image of a god was installed.
When Priscilla died in October 1854, her coffin was inscribed with the words “the beloved of Francis Jack Earl of Kilmorey”. Inside the mausoleum, the Earl installed a marble relief carved in Rome by Lawrence MacDonald (1799-1878) which showed Priscilla lying on her death bed, with the Earl at her feet and her son Charles by her side. Her burial was a private matter and years later Priscilla’s whereabouts were still a secret as the Middlesex Chronicle had reported that the mausoleum “contained the body of a dear friend”.
In 1862 when Kilmorey moved to Woburn Park, Chertsey, he moved the mausoleum with him at a cost of £700. Just six years later Kilmorey moved to Gordon House, moving the mausoleum for the last time.
At Gordon House the Earl made a tunnel to the mausoleum and it is said that, dressed in white and laid in his coffin, he would get his servants to push him on a trolley down the tunnel for practice.
After Kilmorey’s death in June 1880, Gordon House was left in trust to his illegitimate son, Charles Needham, until the time of his marriage. In 1895, Charles sold Gordon House for £10,000. In 1936 the grounds of the mausoleum were passed on in perpetuity to Hounslow Borough Council on condition that access would be maintained, although it was not for some time that anyone entered this secret cemetery.
