Catholic church for the Parish of West Melbourne. One of the most architecturally and historically significant churches in Australia, it has been a parish since 1873, although the site served as a mission from the construction of the first church in 1854.
Demand for a larger building was fueled by a growing Catholic population in the area; the foundation stone for the current church was laid in 1882. A shortage of funds among other reasons halted progress and construction of the building did not commence until 1892, ironically during the 1890's Depression. The church was opened in 1900 by Cardinal Moran, although completion of the building was not until 1925.
In recent years extensive restoration work has been undertaken both inside and out.
RIVER MURRAY BARRAGES
COMMISSION INSPECTS
The Commissioner of Public Works (Mr McIntosh) and members of the River Commission visited Goolwa recently and saw for the first time the Goolwa Murray Mouth Barrage in full action. Only the finishing touches and the cleaning up remain to be done to complete one of the greatest engineering works ever attempted in Australia. An informal ceremony will shortly be held to mark the completion of the Barrage work.
Mundoo, Ewe Island channel and Tauwitcherie portions of the Barrage were also inspected, and the party saw the simple operation of opening the gates by a travelling crane. The small lock for the passage of fishing craft was also inspected.
The Chairman of the Commission (Mr T Hill) said that the actual work had been carried out by the South Australian Engineer-in-Chief's Department. It had been completed without a hitch, and he desired to pay tribute to the skill the executive members of the department had shown.
Tests taken of the salt content of the river show that in many points stretching towards Murray Bridge there were up to 1,200 grains of salt to the gallon this time last year. The Barrage has been in full operation for only three weeks, and at the same points the salt content is now only 20 grains to the gallon. To ascertain the effect of the sea water on the reinforced concrete work, a block was placed in sea water three years ago. When examined recently the block was found to be in perfect condition.
“It is a notable work of the utmost value to South Australia,' said Mr McIntosh. “When it is realised that a stretch of fresh water now runs from the Barrage to Blanchetown, and is there for ever, its value to the State can be realised.”
Reeds and rushes have appeared along the banks of the River, which growth is important as the engineers consider it will protect the foreshore. Cattle also find these edible, and there is a theory that the reeds and rushes will provide feeding and breeding grounds for fish.

Completion of the north wall at the Seabrook Floodgate Complex and the east and west tie ins will defend against a storm surge event that has a 1 percent chance of occuring in any given year.
2022 First Place - Human Spirit category
This is a photo of two hikers (tree boy and soccer mom) embracing at the northern terminus after a Sept. nobo completion. They met for the first time at the hostel in big bear and became fast friends.
This moment was especially incredible because mountain weather had stunted everyone’s final push to finish; and in an incredible effort of fitness and determination, soccer mom ground out 60 miles in a day and half to catch his tramily at the monument. He was welcomed to Canada by tunnel arch of 30 hikers waiting to celebrate with him that then turned into a massive group hug.

Leighton Buzzard Narrow Gauge Railway's Stonehenge Works to Mundays Hill extension
The sub-base for the formation is nearing completion. A 200mm thick layer of 'ironstone' has been laid on top of a geotextile membrane. This provides a load bearing but porous base to lay the track on.

i later roughed up the image with some yellow washes that settled nicely into the grain, and added fire in the speech bubble. here's the finished piece.

I was honored to be awarded a commission from Greg Graffin, founder and lead singer of the seminal punk band Bad Religion as well as author of the upcoming Anarchy Evolution, coming this fall from Harper Collins, for which I also happened to design a number of book cover treatments as well, which I'll throw in the mix.
Greg and I met through a mutual friend, we both grew up in Racine, Wisconsin a few years apart. Not only had I spent a great deal of time hanging out in his neighborhood, but years later I painted the very schoolyard where Greg and his pals spent their days and nights.
My painting Gulf patrickking.org/gulf.htm reminded Greg of Bad Religion's album cover for Suffer and we began discussing me undertaking a commission of his father's home.
I thought I'd put this album together to document the progress.

At the completion of the last combined arms live fire for Exercise Saber Guardian 2017; Soldiers from the 5-113th Field Artillery and South Dakota National Guard were treated to a roasted pig, Carolina style. Exercise Saber Guardian 2017 is a U.S. European Command taking place in Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria involving more than 25,000 service members from over 20 ally and partner nations. The largest of the Black Sea Region exercises, Saber Guardian 17 is a premier training event for U.S. Army Europe and participating nations that will build readiness and improve interoperability under a unified command, executing a full range of military missions to support the security and stability of the Black Sea Region. Founded with the completion of the International-Great Northern Railway in 1872 this little city of 600 people was designated to become a ghost town in the great depression as cotton prices went down. However, in 1930 Dad Joiner struck oil - the vast East Texas Oilfield. Within 6 years the population reached 10,000 almost todays size and was crowded with oil derricks.

The Heartlands Project is a community-led vision to transform 7.5ha of Cornwall’s most derelict industrial landscape into a truly inspirational cultural attraction.
LUC won an international competition to masterplan and design an imaginative mixed-use site that would become a catalyst for regeneration in the future. Working with a large multidisciplinary team, for the client Cornwall Council, our team delivered a project that referenced Cornwall’s history and the site’s heritage, making it a space that fosters convergence and reflection.
Our design aimed to capture the spirit of Cornwall, providing dynamic new spaces for the community and visitors to enjoy. The masterplan included places to relax in the Diaspora Gardens, an outdoor events space and surrounding parkland. We also created the largest free adventure playground in Cornwall, with play specialists Timberplay. Revelling in Cornish folklore, the playground includes custom-made wooden climbing structures, tunnels and a beach with diggers and a sand transportation system.
The development also encompassed the Grade II listed Robinson’s Shaft, which was restored to provide a gateway for the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site, artists’ studios and residential units.
