Congratulations to our high potential EOP students on their completion of their residential bridge experience. Our convocation took place on Sunday, December 3, 2017. Back in the summer of 2016, most of these students were admitted to our campus by EOP as "special-admit" freshmen. This means that CSU rejected these students due to their low grades in high school, but EOP leaders recognized their high potential. For a summer plus three semesters, EOP leaders provided support services, especially mentors, to help these students develop their potential. These students have proven to be high-achieving individuals.

The Heartlands Project is a community-led vision to transform 7.5ha of Cornwall’s most derelict industrial landscape into a truly inspirational cultural attraction.

LUC won an international competition to masterplan and design an imaginative mixed-use site that would become a catalyst for regeneration in the future. Working with a large multidisciplinary team, for the client Cornwall Council, our team delivered a project that referenced Cornwall’s history and the site’s heritage, making it a space that fosters convergence and reflection.

Our design aimed to capture the spirit of Cornwall, providing dynamic new spaces for the community and visitors to enjoy. The masterplan included places to relax in the Diaspora Gardens, an outdoor events space and surrounding parkland. We also created the largest free adventure playground in Cornwall, with play specialists Timberplay. Revelling in Cornish folklore, the playground includes custom-made wooden climbing structures, tunnels and a beach with diggers and a sand transportation system.

The development also encompassed the Grade II listed Robinson’s Shaft, which was restored to provide a gateway for the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site, artists’ studios and residential units.

Completion of Thames Hall was delayed by strikes and material shortages. Western had secured the services of the Governor General of Canada his Excellency Viscount Alexander of Tunis to open the building and receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. The date could not be changed. Extensive camouflage was used to hide construction throughout the building and the ceremony went ahead without incident. At no time did his Excellency seem to notice the unfinished state of the building, inside or out.

Although the Abbey was founded in 1087 by nobleman Robert FitzHamon, building of the present Abbey did not start until 1102. Built to house Benedictine monks, the Norman Abbey was near completion when consecrated in 1121.

Embellishments to the long nave roof and the apsidal chancel were made in the first half of the 14th century in the Decorated style. After the dissolution in 1540 most of the claustral buildings and the Lady Chapel were quarried for their materials but the Abbey Church was sold to the parishioners for £453. Changes made since then to the internal configuration have developed to reflect contemporary styles of devotion, currently of the Anglo-Catholic persuasion.

Lying at the southern edge of the old town, the Abbey quietly dominates the land and skyline with its long nave and “probably the largest and finest Romanesque tower in England” (Pevsner). Vestiges of its social domination can be deduced from the layout of the streets and buildings, and the occasional relic; the Abbot’s gatehouse, the Abbey Mill, The vicarage and the Tudor-style dwellings in Church Street. The area surrounding the Abbey is protected from development by the Abbey Lawn Trust, originally funded by a United States benefactor.
