Upon completion of a Quick Impact Project, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan and partners hand over a solar-powered water pump to the community of Gormoyok village in Rejaf Payam. The project was requested by the community, implemented by Islamic Relief Worldwide, and sub-contracted to Relief Line with funding from UNMISS. The water pump station is able to draw 40,000 liters of water per day, during both dry and rainy seasons, and will supplement the hand pump well recently installed nearby. The community requested aid due to the fact that water trucks in town have largely been diverted to the Protection of Civilians site nearby, making it difficult to obtain clean water for drinking and cooking.

Equipment to be installed soon

With the landscaping work done and concrete down, Ironton’s soon-to-be skate park is a little closer to an opening date.
Workers completed the landscaping for the park, located at Fourth and Etna streets over the weekend, Mayor Rich Blankenship said.
Concrete work for the park was completed about two months ago.
The city also already has the skating equipment that will be installed in the park. Sometime this month a representative from the company that makes the equipment will supervise its installation.
“We want to do it the way the manufacturer calls for it,” Blankenship said.
Blankenship is planning to have a grand opening event for the park, though no tentative date has been set.
The park is being paid for with grant and donated funds.
Ironton City Council recently approved a resolution to transfer $30,000 from the general fund to the recreation department for the completion of the park.
The money will be reimbursed to the city through a grant from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
The council also recently heard the first reading of an ordinance establishing rules and regulations at the park. According to the proposed rules, the park will be open from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. and park-goers will skate at their own risk

Completion of the north wall at the Seabrook Floodgate Complex and the east and west tie ins will defend against a storm surge event that has a 1 percent chance of occuring in any given year.
It's not quite a garden, but crews on the SR 167 Completion Project in Pierce County, WA are planting thousands of plants along Hylebos Creek.
In addition to extending SR 167, we're also revitalizing more than 150 acres of wetlands on either side of I-5 in Fife. In 2023, we realigned a significant portion of Hylebos Creek west of I-5. Through spring 2024, we'll plant more than 75,000 trees, grasses, ferns and other types of vegetation native to the area along the banks of the creek. The entire 150 acres will eventually be replanted with 400,000 plants!
The SR 167 Completion project, along with restoring this vital habitat, is part of our Puget Sound Gateway Program which completes critical links in Washington’s highway and freight network. It will build an important new connection to the Port of Tacoma, improve the movement of freight and reduce congestion on local roads and highway.

I was honored to be awarded a commission from Greg Graffin, founder and lead singer of the seminal punk band Bad Religion as well as author of the upcoming Anarchy Evolution, coming this fall from Harper Collins, for which I also happened to design a number of book cover treatments as well, which I'll throw in the mix.
Greg and I met through a mutual friend, we both grew up in Racine, Wisconsin a few years apart. Not only had I spent a great deal of time hanging out in his neighborhood, but years later I painted the very schoolyard where Greg and his pals spent their days and nights.
My painting Gulf patrickking.org/gulf.htm reminded Greg of Bad Religion's album cover for Suffer and we began discussing me undertaking a commission of his father's home.
I thought I'd put this album together to document the progress.

At the completion of the last combined arms live fire for Exercise Saber Guardian 2017; Soldiers from the 5-113th Field Artillery and South Dakota National Guard were treated to a roasted pig, Carolina style. Exercise Saber Guardian 2017 is a U.S. European Command taking place in Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria involving more than 25,000 service members from over 20 ally and partner nations. The largest of the Black Sea Region exercises, Saber Guardian 17 is a premier training event for U.S. Army Europe and participating nations that will build readiness and improve interoperability under a unified command, executing a full range of military missions to support the security and stability of the Black Sea Region. Move-ins to commence January 2017. New 22-story courthouse (designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill) on the block bounded by Union, State, B and C streets. San Diego Superior Court, State of California.
The Bellarine Peninsula Railway received three steam locos from Puffing Billy in 2009, to be restored into operating condition. Poziers was the first one, finished in 2011.
Work continues on the mainline of I-485 near Prosperity Church Road. The 5.7 mile segment will complete the Outer Loop around Charlotte.
To celebrate completion of the first week of my Fall Semester I made a late Friday trip down to Alviso to check out Salt Ponds A6 and A8. These ponds lie just west of Alviso and have been opened to tidal flow in the last year.
I was able to visit Salt Pond A6 (the Knapp Tract) a year ago to photograph the pre-breach condition of the pond. It was an interesting landscape for a variety of reasons. The pond had been in disuse and its bottom had been taken over as a breeding ground by tens of thousands of California Gulls. The scene provided interesting ground textures with the added bonus that you could see the earthwork preparations for the upcoming levee breach.
Salt Pond A8 was a different scene. A year ago this pond was not dry but filled with water in a way that was visually complex. From the ground it looked like a large pond. But from above it was clear that the upper layer of the pond was clear fresh water (I assume rain water) while a couple of feet below the surface the water appeared to have higher salinity and the mid-green, turbid color of halophiles. This murky green water conformed to the deepest areas such as old marsh channels and borrow ditches. The effect was photographically interesting.
Fast-forward to the current day and Salt Pond A8 is still filled with water but it is now managed tidal flow. This new water is also turbid – with sediment not halophiles – and causes the pond to have a uniformity that is less interesting to photograph. On the other hand, Salt Pond A6 has made a more interesting transformation from dry abandoned pond to a place that fills and empties with the tides every day. It seems much transformed as seen from the air and is already accumulating sediment.
This set also includes views of Salt Pond A7 and its large crop of Cyanobacteria as well as Alviso Slough and the A ponds on its other side.
The interior of the Sagrada Familia
The stunning interior of the basilica Sagrada Familia was consecrated by Pope
The Sagrada Familia is Barcelona's most famous symbol and certainly one of its most impressive sights. The church is huge in its dimensions, so it is often called the "cathedral", although it is without a bishop's headquarters. On 11/07/2010, the Sagrada Familia was consecrated by Pope Benedict XVI and elevated to the status of a basilica.
The completion of the interior and consecration was a great moment for Barcelona. Now, finally, the imposing, yet ingenious design of the brilliant Antoni Gaudí could be admired. And all this without scaffolding and machinery noise.
The church of the Sagrada Familia is a five-naved basilica. The central nave rises above the others significantly. To each nave a door is assigned to the unfinished glory facade. There are also two side portals that lead to the penance chapel and baptistery. Behind the nave, in the apse, is the altar, in the light of the many windows of the apse.
In the same way that the façades carry a rich symbology, the layout of the church is also full of symbols. Every door, every column, and almost every area has its own concrete or symbolic significance. This symbolism refers to the individual Catalan dioceses and Spanish dioceses, to every church in Latin America, on each of the five continents, to the apostles, to the great religious founders and most revered saints, the theological virtues, the sacraments, and more.
The vault-and-pillar system inside the basilica
The first drafts of the naves were similar in their basic features to the Gothic style, but without additional support and buttress. In this original design, the walls were still the main elements of each column, and were indispensable for the stability of the building. Gaudí's studies of stability were groundbreaking: the architect created a knotted rope construction in which the columns correspond to the ropes. He turned the construction of the pressure points and hung small weights. In this way he was able to simulate the pressure gradients in the columns.
The result of his research is a tree-like column structure. The columns are inclined and branched-like trees. The weight will be routed directly over the pillars in the ground - all this without bearing facade or exterior buttresses. The result of this ingenious solution is spectacular: the pillars and arches supported by them transform the interior of the temple into a stone forest of palm trees, lots of light streaming in through large windows and the vault.
The vertical and partly inclined pillars are decorated with grooves. It creates the impression that the material constituting the pillars has been stretched. At the top the pillars branch out so that each can support multiple points of the ceiling. All sections of the roof are supported by such branched columns.
The columns are made of materials of different hardness. The longest and thickest columns are made of red porphyry, a very hard volcanic rock. The dark, somewhat smaller pillars are made of basalt, granite columns supporting the lighter and the outermost row of pillars in the church building consist of a relatively soft rock from the mountain of Barcelona, Montjuic. The "smallest" pillars support the chancel.
The interior of the Sagrada Familia constitutes the essence of Gaudí’s architecture: there is no model within architecture for the vault-and-pillar system.
The Sagrada Familia's five naves
The layout of the church has the shape of a Latin cross - with enormous dimensions. The Sagrada Familia is one of the world's largest Church buildings: from the entrance to the apse it is 90 metres, the five naves are limited by a 60 metre long and 45 metre wide transept. The four side naves are 7.5 metres wide each, the main nave is 15 metres - exactly twice as wide. The vault of the main nave is 45 metres high, and the side aisles are 30 metres high.
Construction of the naves was started in 1987, based on models that were created by Antoni Gaudí, and which were not destroyed during the Spanish Civil War.
In the outermost naves, the chancels are both situated in a gallery. These provide space for over 1,500 singers.
In contrast to the Gothic style Gaudí’s design requires no supporting side walls, and heavy vault: he used this freedom to incorporate numerous windows that allow plenty of natural light inside.
The apse of the Sagrada Familia
Within architecture an Apse is known as one half of a dome roofed area. In a church, it is usually the area where the altar stands.
Immediately after the completion of the crypt Gaudí had the apse built above. The Gothic-style apse is surrounded by seven chapels and two side stairs to the left and right.
These lead to spiral staircases from the crypt and continue up into the facades. As an indication of the spiral staircase you see two big stone snails crawling down the wall on the outer walls of the apse. The inside walls of the apse are decorated with angels' heads and tears that should remind one of the suffering of Jesus.
The apse was completed in 1893 by a huge crowned dome dedicated to the Virgin Mary, which are supported by massive columns. The entire apse and dome are flooded with light; it is very bright for Gothic Architecture.
In the centre is the raised altar, crowned by the Latin cross with a canopy, decorated with vines and grapes of a vine, as Gaudí's only concession to the traditional church design. Behind the altar are the organ pipes, which, although they have very large dimensions, represent very delicate work.
Crews install steel arches for a new tunnel under I-5 in SeaTac, WA as part of the SR 509 Completion Project.
The new Veterans Drive tunnel will connect to the southbound I-5 off ramp to SR 516 (visible on the far right) and a new on-ramp to northbound I-5. Veterans Drive will also be extended between the on-ramp and Military Road, slightly farther to the east.
This will give travelers, freight in particular, easier access to I-5. Many freight trucks travel up Veterans Drive from the Kent Valley but then must turn onto Military Road and then SR 516 to enter I-5. Extending Veterans Drive and building the tunnel will give all travelers more direct access to the interstate.
The SR 509 Completion Project is part of the Puget Sound Gateway Program which completes critical missing links in Washington state's highway and freight network.
