The Data Technology Institute, the Bayes Centre, is the £39m completion phase of the Potterrow development adjoining the Informatics Forum and Dugald Stewart Buildings which opened in 2008.
Design by Bennetts Associates architects, engineering by Buro Happold and construction by McLaughlin & Harvey.
"The Data Technology Institute will create a hub for innovation that substantially broadens the scope of the School of Informatics. The building will house a mixture of internal users and external groups that may include start-up companies and research groups amongst many others. The building will provide flexible spaces in the form of individual offices, open plan working, dedicated secure space for external groups, social space, meeting and conference rooms, laboratories (for robotics and human monitoring), teaching spaces and seminar rooms." www.ed.ac.uk/estatesprojects/central-area/live-capital-pr...

This is my first post since the completion of my 365 Species Project. I've almost forgotten how to write a description.
I've been so focused for the last two years on getting the single, best photo of a particular species posted that I've overlooked so many good shots in my archives.
For a little while, I plan to spend some time going through my archives and sharing whatever I feel like! So relaxing!
I hope you like this pair of hooded mergansers. I got up early one Sunday morning and went to a pond in a natural area on UF's campus specifically to shoot these guys. I really like the colors of the morning light and the stillness of the water. Let me know what you think!

LUC was first appointed by The Royal Parks in 2010 to design a cross country jump as part of the Olympic Equestrian event to be held in the Park in 2012. The jump was also to act as a play piece Post Games as a legacy and thanks for holding the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic events in the Park.
The success of this first phase of work enabled further funding to be allocated for improvement works to the rest of the playground, which began with development of a Masterplan and a strategy for delivering future phases of work. A design concept was developed, based on a ‘Pioneering’ theme to reflect Greenwich’s history as the starting place for explorers to sail out and discover the new world.
The third phase of work sought to implement the next stage of this vision Masterplan and to continue the approach towards a more natural play based area that better integrates into the setting of the Park. Numerous old pieces of play equipment nearing the end of their lifespan were also replaced. The completed third phase is comprised of a series of open areas for social and competitive play, with more intimate spaces offering a sense of exploration and discovery.
LUC hopes to continue the playground refurbishment works into a fourth phase of work, which will also look to improve the relationship between the playground and the boating lake, completing the enhancement of this northern quarter of Greenwich Park.

At the completion of an oil well, the drillers fill the space around the drill casing with concrete. Then they lower this gadget (the holes visible here have shaped explosive charges in them) into the hole, then set off the charges. They do this at the depths at which they found hydrocarbons during the drilling process.

Darlington law firm Latimer Hinks has announced that local girl Natalie Walker has qualified as a solicitor.
Following the completion of a Business and Legal Studies degree at the University of Sunderland, Natalie advertised herself in the Law Society Gazette. She was contacted by Latimer Hinks and joined the firm as a Legal Executive.
In 2002 she was offered a year’s internship at leading New York-based solicitors, Proskauer Rose and took a year out to experience life on the other side of the Atlantic.
On her return from New York, Natalie spent two years undertaking the Common Professional Examination (CPE), which is a law conversion course enabling graduates in disciplines other than law, to complete the academic stage of legal training. She then continued with her distance learning and spent two years completing the Legal Practice Course before qualifying as a solicitor.
Natalie works in the Private Client department at Latimer Hinks, specialising in wills and probate work.
Natalie said: “Although I have taken a roundabout route it is fantastic to have finally qualified as a solicitor. Everyone at Latimer Hinks has been very supportive, particularly in allowing me to take a year out for the amazing New York experience. I am now looking forward to progressing my career here in Darlington.”
Anne Elliott, partner at Latimer Hinks said: “Natalie is a talented young solicitor who has impressed with her dedication. We are very pleased that she has qualified and she will be a valuable asset to the Private Client department.”

The impressive 1950s Roman Catholic church of Christ the King in Kingstanding, one of Birmingham's northern suburbs is a church I have got to know well as a result of my latest stained glass project, to design and make two large three-light windows flanking the sanctuary, the first of which was installed in the last 2 days (march 7th / 8th 2011).
The church is a large brick building which originally had a rather spartan, barn-like interior as a result of it's brick finish, but thanks to the initiative of Fr Michael White the interior has been recently transformed and much improved by a more sympathetic plaster finish, which has lightened the interior since 2007. Another more recent developement is the church's new community centre constructed in 2009 which is now joined to the main facade on Warren Farm Road.
The church contains some fine examples of stained glass from the 1950s and 60s, principally the liturgical west window in the facade which features a bold Christ in majesty flanked by angels on a vibrant background. Glass of a similar date and style is situated in three of the side chapels and spaces that flank the main nave with busts of the Virgin & Child, St Theresa of Lisieux and St John. A smaller 1980s panel of St John the Baptist,by Tony Naylor for Norgrove Studios, was recently moved from the 'west' end to the new community hall extension.
The 'east' wall by contrast has no windows, just a flat wall with a wooden Crucifix at it's centre. My new window of the Nativity has just been installed immediately to the right, to be complimented by a Creation themed window on the corresponding position to the left.

After completion of the magnetics characterization, CCOR-1 is moved to a clean tent to prepare for vibration testing. When not being worked on, CCOR remains covered for protection. This side view of CCOR shows the stand alone Power System Box (PSB) in front of the CCOR Instrument Module (CIM). Copper taped harnessing can be seen connecting the PSB to the CIM Instrument Control Box at the rear of the CIM.

To celebrate the completion of the rennovation of Marshalls Mill (in the Holbeck Urban Village area of Leeds), and also the start of the UK Green Film Festival, the carpark at Marshalls Mill played host to a free temporary pop-up "walk-in" cinema for one night only. On display were a number of local short films, followed by the main feature, the award winning documentary "Happy" that travelled the world trying to uncover the secret to happiness.
Refreshments were courtesy of local businesses, with The Midnight Bell putting on a tasty BBQ, The Cross Keys supplying the booze (via it's Mr Frothy converted ice-cream van), coffee from Lotties Coffee, popcorn from Out Of The Woods, and a charity cake sale organised by Leeds Met.

After the completion of music there is a huge surge of fans exiting the venue. In a well rehearsed operation between Dublin Bus, An Garda Siochana and M.C.D. the operation flows very well and this year went without a hitch, despite the apalling weather conditions. Vital to this operation is a continual feed of buses, they are fed down an internal road from a car park, loaded up to five at a time, to be replaced by five more. 120 buses were in place when the festival came to an end on Saturday, day trippers, and those whom choose to go home and freshen up had no longer to wait than ten minutes, impressive by any standard, as 22,000 people turn up in a very short space of time
