I'm not sure how this happened, but somehow my roommate entered a competition with McCormick spices and won $1000 worth of stuff to throw a party as a competition against 14 other people for tickets to NY. I was enlisted to shoot the photos and these are a few of the photographs captured over the course of the evening.
Certified Angus Beef (www.certifiedangusbeef.com) competition at Culinary Institute of Virginia (www.chefva.com) on Friday, 28 August, 2009. Students competed for scholarship funds based on several factors, including creative and effective use of beef in a prepared appetizer and entree. I was a judge at the competition.

On our first whale watch trip, we got to see an active competition pod. Males often compete with each other for the right to be the primary escort to a female in hopes to mate with her when she is ready. Competition pods can include just two males or a couple of dozen and can last from a few minutes to several hours. The males will often lunge out of the water with mouths and throats full of water in order to make themselves look bigger. They will also lunge on top of the other whales in the competition pod. While most of this goes on under water, often times signs of the competition pod can be seen on the surface such as in these images. Because of all the activity, they surface more frequently and the blows seem more powerful than normal to go along with the energy being expended in these pods. It clearly is a departure from the more calm and docile behaviors normally observed of cruising humpback whales. These are just a sampling of what we saw (and what I was able to capture). I hope you get a sense of the power and energy on display when two or more 90,000 pound whales collide with each other. Enjoy!

My friend Dwayne owns a shop selling skates as well as teaching skating classes. To promote his various interests he held a power-sliding competition in Weinan, Shaanxi, China.
I took along a couple of YN460 strobes, my 5D Mark II , 24-105mm F4 and my 135L.
It was very crowded which made getting good shots tough, especially with the longer 135L.
