On our first whale watch trip, we got to see an active competition pod. Males often compete with each other for the right to be the primary escort to a female in hopes to mate with her when she is ready. Competition pods can include just two males or a couple of dozen and can last from a few minutes to several hours. The males will often lunge out of the water with mouths and throats full of water in order to make themselves look bigger. They will also lunge on top of the other whales in the competition pod. While most of this goes on under water, often times signs of the competition pod can be seen on the surface such as in these images. Because of all the activity, they surface more frequently and the blows seem more powerful than normal to go along with the energy being expended in these pods. It clearly is a departure from the more calm and docile behaviors normally observed of cruising humpback whales. These are just a sampling of what we saw (and what I was able to capture). I hope you get a sense of the power and energy on display when two or more 90,000 pound whales collide with each other. Enjoy!

IU Kokomo hosted a F.I.R.S.T. Robotics Tech Challenge Qualifying Tournament, a state-wide robotics competition for high school robotics teams.. Teams from around Northern Indiana competed and some placed for the state competition in Indianapolis
Master's in Management students took on a real-world case in this competition sponsored by FactSet. The final round was held September 28, 2018.

My friend Dwayne owns a shop selling skates as well as teaching skating classes. To promote his various interests he held a power-sliding competition in Weinan, Shaanxi, China.
I took along a couple of YN460 strobes, my 5D Mark II , 24-105mm F4 and my 135L.
It was very crowded which made getting good shots tough, especially with the longer 135L.
I'm not sure how this happened, but somehow my roommate entered a competition with McCormick spices and won $1000 worth of stuff to throw a party as a competition against 14 other people for tickets to NY. I was enlisted to shoot the photos and these are a few of the photographs captured over the course of the evening.

After a few conversations with Phil at work, we decided to arrange a camping trip away in the Lakes within his brother and friend Andy.
We'd booked at the Castlerigg Farm campsite but when we arrived, we were turned away stating they don't allow all male parties. Frustrated, we tried Castlerigg Hall opposite that had a similar policy, but after offering a good behaviour deposit, they agreed to host us.
We setup the tents, ate at the campsite cafe, and then hit the bar. After a couple of drinks, we returned back to the tents for an early evening.
The plan for Saturday was a short walk up to Easedale Tarn, and then return to Keswick for an afternoon indoor climbing. Getting out of the frozen tents was tough and after a quick breakfast we drove down to Grasmere to start the walk.
Upon arriving at the tarn the weather warmed, and excited about my knee, I decided to forego the drive back to climb, and instead decided to walk back to Keswick over the fells.
The impromptu walk was a little toughter than expected, and I was a little concerned as I started to descend from High Seat, the sun was going down. The lads were getting a little worried too, but I finally arrived back at the campsite about 5. It sounded like they'd enjoyed a scenic drive, and great time on the wall.
Having worked up an apetite, we headed off to a local pub for a big dinner.

The Young Chamber Musicians Competition began in May 2014, when youth chamber ensembles in the Carolinas were invited to submit video performances for a chance to win their share of $4500. The competition culminated on Saturday, September 13, 2014 with four ensembles, two from each age group, performing in a live adjudicated event on the Davidson College campus.

The 704th Military Intelligence Brigade conducts the best squad competition with squads comprised of the 741st Military Intelligence Battalion, 742nd Military Intelligence Battalion, and 743rd Military Intelligence Battalion at Fort Meade, MD, from March 20th through March 24th, 2023. Soldiers competed and were graded on completing an Army Combat Fitness Test, a written exam, basic rifle marksmanship, land navigation, squad movements, reacting to contact, asses a casualty, a 12-mile ruck march, and a swimming event.
