On Sep. 6, 2013, HEROES passed its compatibility test, which allowed it to move on to its flight readiness review. The test includes a final weighing: HEROES weighed in at 5015 pounds. "Slightly more than expected," said Steven Christe, the co-principal investigator for HEROES at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "But nothing the balloon can't handle."

--

In Ft. Sumner, N.M., a team of scientists is readying a giant balloon -- and a 5,015-pound telescope – for launch in mid-September 2013. During its flight some 25 miles up in the sky, the balloon, called HEROES, for High Energy Replicated Optics to Explore the Sun, will carry a hard X-ray telescope with a two-part job. During the day, the telescope will observe the sun. It will record imagery of giant bursts of radiation and light on the sun called solar flares with 10 times better resolution than the best solar observations to date in these wavelengths. At night, the telescope will turn its focus toward other stars, collecting X-ray data from astrophysical sources such as the crab Nebula. The hard X-ray sky is relatively unexplored, especially at high resolution.

The HEROES mission is funded by NASA's Hands-On Project Experience, or HOPE, Training Opportunity award, an honor designed to promote achievement among America's newest ranks of space scientists and engineers. HEROES is led by Jessica Gaskin, an astrophysicist at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center and Steven Christe, a solar scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.

NASA Goddard Space Flight Center enables NASA’s mission through four scientific endeavors: Earth Science, Heliophysics, Solar System Exploration, and Astrophysics. Goddard plays a leading role in NASA’s accomplishments by contributing compelling scientific knowledge to advance the Agency’s mission.

It has been a challenge to get these three accessories to work together with your Yuba Mundo v3.2:

* The v3 Utility Deck (shown here)

* The Peanut Shell kid's seat

* A Go-Getter bag (both the original version and the new 2012 model.

The problem is that the presence of the Peanut Shell means that the Go Getter bag either has to be scrunched up or offset to the rear. However, the Utility Deck limits where clips can go through.

I think I've found the best solution: I cut off nearly all the "bump outs" on the Utility Deck, maximizing the places the Go-Getter can attach to the frame. That was done with just a straight edge to line up the cut, a screw-driver to mark the line in the plastic, and a hand-saw to cut off the bump-outs.

As far as I can tell, the Utility Deck will still function about the same, and will be a few grams lighter to boot. It also looks like a reasonable enough alternation that it was meant to be be that by.

Now, I no longer mess with trying to get the Go-Getter back to attach *under* the Peanut Shell, which I think would be impossible with the new 2012 models. Instead, I attach the bag immediately behind the seat.

The offset is not ideal-- there only room to attach one of the two hooks on each side of the Go Getter bag, and a bit of the bag extends beyond the rear of the bike. Both of those changes mean that the total practical weight capacity of each bag is reduced, but that's an acceptable trade-off considering the arrangement allows for carrying a child's seat and a child as well.

Arduino clone with real-time clock, microSD socket, radio module and USB interface. The layout is designed for easy assembly and maximum compatibility with the Arduino Uno, with additional functionality being compatible with the Arduino Mega2560. The optional LM61 temperature sensor is not fitted, nor is the 5V regulator.

Version 2.1 features a few minor of improvements over version 2; the most significant is the addition of Microchip MCP2200 USB to UART converter.

British Supersonic low level attack aircraft dating from the 1970's. This is the 7th version which is still in active service. Improvements include aerodynamic changes and more compatibility with new weapons. It has a lighter fuselage due to the use of new composite materials, more powerful Rolls- Royce Olympus engines, and an advanced avionics suite. The aircraft has a maximum speed of Mach 2.5 in level flight at 50,000 ft. But it is known for its' sea level maximum speed of Mach 1.3. It has a massive take off run when fully loaded, owing to its' sender ogival delta wing, and high take off weight. However, the use of flap blowing after the 2nd version aided to shorten this take off run, and facilitate greater handling at low speed

The aircraft has no internal gun, but can use a gun pod under its' wing.

Shown here is the aircraft in a fully loaded configuration, with external fuel tanks, unguided and GPS guided bombs

Members of Hera’s testing team prepare for electromagnetic compatibility testing during the mission’s pre-flight test campaign at ESA’s Test Centre in Noordwijk, the Netherlands.

Hera is ESA’s first mission for planetary defence. Due for launch in October 2024, Hera will fly to the Didymos binary asteroid system in deep space to perform a close-up survey of the Dimorphos moonlet in orbit around the primary body. The Great-Pyramid-sized Dimorphos is already historic, as the first Solar System object to have its orbit changed by human activity, by the 2022 impact of NASA’s DART mission.

Hera is intended to gather crucial missing data about Dimorphos for scientists, to turn DART’s grand-scale experiment into a well-understood and potentially repeatable planetary defence technique. To increase its yield of data, Hera carries with it ESA’s first deep space CubeSats, carrying additional instruments and planned to fly closer to the asteroid’s surface than the main spacecraft, before eventually landing.

Part of Hera’s testing was documented for the spacecraft team by photographer Max Alexander, who specialises in science communication through photography.

I purchased an obitsu 11 body for a hybrid test, after all, who doesn't want a more poseable nendoroid?

The good news: the scale is perfect, she looks perfectly scaled on the body, its not alien or weird at all!

The bad news: The neck needs modification. You can see that her neck part is just too small. The second bad news is that the head seems to be too heavy, but that might be because the head isn't secure or the hair part is too heavy.

Al in all I'm looking forward to modding this body to be compatible with nendoroids!

Vedic Astrology Horoscope has a method of providing a fairly good indication of compatibility based on nakshatras (Lunar Constellations) of prospective husband and wife. It assigns points (guna) for factors that influence marriage. Although, neither this site, nor the whole process is the final say on compatibility issues (guna milap), it can be a good starting point. Apart from determining the number of Gunas that match in the two horoscopes, there are other factors that should be taken into consideration: longevity, health, wealth, children.

Preparing Hera’s High Gain Antenna for electromagnetic compatibility testing in ESA’s Maxwell chamber, during its pre-flight test campaign at ESA’s Test Centre in Noordwijk, the Netherlands.

RoundFlash™ magnetic edition 5

Yet another treat for you from Ebay, each camera body cost no more than £10.00 post and packing extra £3.00. Not bought in the same auction.

F60/N60

The new Nikon N55 and existing Canon Rebel 2000 are far superior cameras, at the same or lower price.

For instance, the obsolete Nikon N60 has only one focus sensor, has no compatibility with AF-S lenses, no depth-of-field preview and a slow motor drive. The new N65 has five useful AF sensors, works with AF-S lenses, has a 2.5 FPS motor drive and has a useful DOF preview button.

The old N60 has a heavy metal chassis and the new N65 is just plastic, however they both feel like throw-away cameras. The old N60 also has a 1/125 flash sync and the new N65 only 1/90, neither is very good.

Beware of dealers who are stuck with these obsolete but still new cameras in stock. Run out the door screaming if a dealer tries to unload one of his problems (unsold obsolete N60 cameras) on you.

Of course if you already have an N60 don't worry about it; it makes great pictures. The N60 does feel a little sturdier than the N65.

F65/N65

It is a great lightweight, inexpensive (about $300 US complete with a swell lens) plastic camera capable of fantastic results. It has the same technology as every other Nikon and gives the same quality images. That's right, if you are new to photography then you may not realize that the images made with this camera will be identical to those made with a $2,000 F5 that weighs a ton and sucks through mountains of batteries.

If you have some need to mess with every setting and adjustment you may get frustrated and want the N80 instead, but if it's great results you want and don't care about fiddling with settings then this is the way to go. I've learned that fiddling with settings actually leads to missing many great photos, so I always use the AF and program exposure modes. All the latest Nikon AF and exposure technology is in this camera. You have full manual control and control of most important things with this camera; you just can't always fiddle with the really complex things that no one understands anyway like dynamic autofocus tracking.

The only potential drawback is slow flash sync speed, however the N80 isn't much better so don't worry about it unless shooting action with fill flash in daylight is important to you. If this is important you have to go to the F100 or cheaper but obsolete N90s.

F75/N75

This is a swell plastic camera originally designed for people who had never used a camera before. If you're more serious by all means go for the slightly more expensive N80 which is more durable. The N75 offers most of the N80's features in a package with the same durability of the cheapest N55.

As of 2008, the N75 makes the best film backup camera I can imagine because it weighs nothing and has every feature I might want.

The N75 has full flash, VR, AF and AFS compatibility. If you're carrying it as a backup, you don't want any extra weight and you don't expect to need to use it, but you need full system comparability if your main body dies.

Fog shrouded the hills near the Esrange Space Center in Kiruna, Sweden on the morning of August 10, 2015. This early morning Flight Compatibility Test on the balloon launch pad preceded the successful BARREL balloon launch in clear weather later that afternoon.

The NASA-funded BARREL – which stands for Balloon Array for Radiation-belt Relativistic Electron Losses – measures electrons in the atmosphere near the poles. Such electrons rain down into the atmosphere from two giant radiation belts surrounding Earth, called the Van Allen belts. For its third campaign, BARREL is launching six balloons from the Esrange Space Center. BARREL is led by Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire.

Soulmate is a term sometimes used to designate someone with whom one has a feeling of deep and natural affinity, love, intimacy, sexuality, spirituality, and/or compatibility. A related concept is that of the twin flame or twin soul – which is thought to be the ultimate soulmate, the one and only other half of one's soul, for which all souls are driven to find and join.

Flickr Faves Compatibility Index - The StatBot - Fun stats. Visualizations. Leaderboards.

Yuvi Sense, who is doing some of the best statistical analysis with APIs on the internet today, has a new post out on something he is calling the Flickr Faves Compatibility Index -- it's awesome for the stats junkie like me.

He got the idea for it from Hutch Carpenter who did a similar project with FriendFeed.

Basically Yuvi's Flickr Faves Compatibility Index analyzes all of your faves to show you the top 25 people who have faved the same photos as you have. If you'd like to have your faves analyzed be sure to drop Yuvi a line in the comments on his thread post as it looks like he's willing to do this analysis for others as well.

I've also asked Yuvi to look at who the top 100 people are that I've faved photos from their stream and who the top 100 people are who have faved my photos. He is going to work on this as well when he's got some more time.

This is interesting analysis that would be great to see included in Flickr's default stats section on their site.

By pointing out people on Flickr whose taste is similar to your own, Flickr might better suggest photographers that you'd be interested in following on the site.

I favorite *alot* of photos on Flickr. The screenshot above are the most recent 36 shots I've faved on Flickr, but I've faved almost 40,000 photos in the 3 and a half years I've been active on the site. Mostly I'm getting my faves these days from FriendFeed. You can see all of my favorites on Flickr here.

Web compatibility test screens on a T-Mobile Android G1 and an HTC Hero mobile phone.

Stop yawning, he wanted it.

Testing one, two and now, three.

Radio frequency testing has begun on the first Orion spacecraft that will fly around the Moon for the Artemis 1 mission, just two weeks after thermal and environmental tests were completed at NASA’s Plum Brook Station in Ohio, USA.

Electromagnetic compatibility or EMC testing is routine for spacecraft. All electronics emit some form of electromagnetic waves that can cause interference with other devices. Think of the buzz that speakers give out right before an incoming call on a mobile phone.

Spacecraft electronics can cause similar interference, but out in space such interference can have disastrous consequences, so all systems must be checked before launch.

EMC tests often take place in a special shielded room constructed of metal walls and doors and foamy spikes (aka absorbers) that block out unwanted external electromagnetic radiation, like ESA’s Maxwell chamber at its technical site in the Netherlands.

Though not an EMC chamber, Plum Brook’s thermal vacuum chamber is made of aluminium that does provide electromagnetic shielding, making it a suitable substitute.

To test electronics, the spacecraft will simulate a flight in realistic conditions with most of its subsystems and equipment powered and in operational mode.

The electronics are first tested for compatibility in this electromagnetic shielded chamber. Equipment will be switched on to test whether they do potentially disturb one another.

In the second round of tests, electromagnetic fields will be applied using antennas around the spacecraft to test the susceptibility to interference from external sources. The Orion capsule is equipped with electromagnetic field sensors to take measurements as the disturbance frequencies are injected into the chamber.

While all subsystems are a potential source of radio frequency noise, of particular interest are the transmitters that intentionally generate radio frequencies. These can easily disturb other equipment sensitive to electromagnetic noise, like GPS receivers, tele-command modules and other communication elements.

ESA experts are on site monitoring all tests alongside NASA colleagues as Orion moves closer to its first flight without a crew around the Moon.

Find more in depth coverage of all things Orion on the blog.
