This is my very first 'Moc'. The idea was to create a building inspired in the Haussmann style present in most of central Paris, without any piece count limit that would keep the modular compatibility and the minifig scale. So this is not a direct replica of any particular one. The street name is also fictional, there is no 'Boulevard des Lumières' in Paris, but its spirit is highly Parisian.

L’anguille de jardin (garden eel) : est une espèce de poissons osseux de petite taille appartenant à la famille des Congridae, qui peut atteindre une longueur maximale de 40 cm. Son corps est anguiforme, il est long, fin, de section circulaire (14 millimètres en moyenne de diamètre) et possède une tête d'un diamètre identique au corps. La tête semble réduite tant sa grande bouche est proche de ses grands yeux. Les narines, de faible taille, traversent le centre de la lèvre supérieure. Elle vit exclusivement en colonies sur des fonds sablonneux exposés aux courants entre 7 et 45 mètres (23 à 150 pieds) de profondeur, des pentes bordant les récifs coralliens et peut également être trouvé dans des zones denses d'herbiers (cela lui permet de se fondre facilement dans son environnement). En utilisant sa queue raide et musclée pour creuser le sol sablonneux, elle remue sa nageoire dorsale pour chasser le sable et sécrète ensuite un mucus gluant qui agit comme du ciment pour empêcher que son terrier ne s'effondrer. Elle échappera aux prédateurs en plongeant la queue la première dans le terrier, puis étendra environ un tier de son corps hors de son terrier lorsqu'il n'y aura plus aucun signe de danger pour manger du zooplancton qu'elle visualise avec ses grands yeux. Vivant à proximité les unes des autres, elles forment ainsi des «jardins» d'anguilles qui se balancent comme des chiens de prairie afin d'équilibrer leur besoin de nourrir avec la sécurité que leurs terriers fournissent.
Les anémones tubéreuses ou les cerianthariens ressemblent beaucoup aux anémones de mer, mais appartiennent à une sous-classe tout à fait différente d'anthozoaires. Son corps est long, souple et cylindrique, surmonté d'une couronne de tentacules non rétractables à une extrémité et d'un pied pointu de l'autre. Une fois dans le substrat, l’anémone construit un tube dur pour y vivre, en libérant des fils d'un type spécial de nématocystes appelé «ptychocyste». Le résultat est un tissu fibreux tissé structuré de cellules urticantes qui aide à le protéger des attaques. Bien que ses tentacules ne soient pas rétractables, si elle est effrayée ou perturbée, elle peut instantanément retirer tout son corps dans le tube. La couronne de tentacules est composée de deux verticilles de tentacules de tailles différentes. Le verticille externe consiste en de grands tentacules qui s'étendent vers l'extérieur. Ces tentacules se rétrécissent en pointe et sont principalement utilisés pour assommer les prédateurs et leurs proies. Heureusement, les tentacules d'une anémone repoussent après une attaque. Les tentacules intérieurs plus petits sont tenus plus droits et sont utilisés pour la manipulation et l'ingestion d'aliments. Les anémones tubulaires se nourrissent par filtration de plancton et de petits invertébrés. Ce sont des polypes généralement solitaires, et ne formant presque jamais de colonies soudées. Dans la nature, certaines espèces d'anémones de mer fouisseuses peuvent vivre de manière commensale avec une variété de crustacés et de vers, mais la compatibilité en aquarium est limitée. The garden eel : is a species of small bony fish belonging to the family of Congridae, which can reach a maximum length of 40 cm. Tuberous anemones or ceriantharians are very similar to sea anemones, but belong to an entirely different subclass of anthozoans. Its body is long, flexible and cylindrical, surmounted by a crown of tentacles not retractable at one end and a pointed foot of the other. Once in the substrate, the anemone builds a hard tube to live in, releasing threads of a special type of nematocyst called "ptychocyst". The result is a structured woven fibrous tissue of stinging cells that helps protect it from attack. Although her tentacles are not retractable, if she is frightened or disturbed, she can instantly pull her whole body into the tube. The crown of tentacles is composed of two whorls of tentacles of different sizes. The outer whorl consists of large tentacles that extend outward. These tentacles shrink to a point and are mainly used to stun predators and their prey. Fortunately, the tentacles of an anemone grow back after an attack. The smaller interior tentacles are held more upright and are used for handling and eating food. Tubular anemones feed by filtration of plankton and small invertebrates. These are usually solitary polyps, and almost never form welded colonies. In the wild, some species of burrowing sea anemone can live commensally with a variety of crustaceans and worms, but aquarium compatibility is limited. In the aquarium, it prefers intermittent periodic currents and requires moderate lighting. Most of the seven burrowing anemone species have fluorescent tentacles that absorb ultraviolet light and return it as visible light.

So I found this book about Zodiac signs and I read it for fun. It's actually surprisingly accurate. I read the profiles of the signs people have that are close to me and I was just amazed at the personality traits and compatibility aspects of it :O

Hidden in the depths of space is a vast experimental light field. Advanced research is well under way to grow multi-chromatic light for the space construction industry. These light beams have a higher tensile strength, greater colour range, are easier to weld and are faster growing than the existing building material. This should mean that the housing needs of the ever growing population can be met within the next era.
Of course there have been objections to such research and there are particular worries about the long term durability and radiation hazards of this new material and its compatibility with existing construction materials. If all goes well it should not be too long before colourful "Light Cities" will be seen throughout the Universe.

“Synopsis”
A Palestinian group from Gaza hacks into North Korea’s cryptocurrency system, stealing hundreds of millions of dollars. Their true goal is not money—but to recreate the lost homeland of Gaza on American soil.
Amid the backdrop of hardline Republican immigration policies and a growing wave of xenophobia, a quiet plan begins to take shape: the gradual collapse of America from within.
During a speech at Madison Square Garden, Republican presidential candidate Justin Bradford is shot. Almost simultaneously in Los Angeles, former president Owen Reed is attacked at a rally for Democratic hopeful Ryan Bennett.
Two assassinations—mirroring one another—ignite a nation’s deepest divide. Yet, against all odds, Justin survives. His blood type is one in 2.5 million: the Bombay Blood Group.
The only person who can donate such blood is Anaya Patel, a community art facilitator working in Brooklyn. Her blood, stored in the Bellevue Hospital Blood Bank, is used for an emergency transfusion that saves the candidate’s life.
Jack Vance, an agent of the U.S. Secret Service, suspects a Gaza-based network behind the attacks. Together with Cameron Bartlett, the FBI Director of the Los Angeles Field Office, and Veronica Reeves, a senior investigator from New York, he begins to uncover a vast conspiracy.
Their investigation leads them to Rafi Gannam, a former architecture student at the Islamic University of Gaza, who has infiltrated redevelopment sites across Los Angeles and New York—embedding C4 explosives deep within beams and structural cores.
His targets: new residential districts where agents of ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and ERO (Enforcement and Removal Operations) live—symbols of “the order America built.”
Veronica urges the President to pursue dialogue to prevent further destruction, but President Grant M. Ranford refuses to listen.
Meanwhile, the recovering Justin and his Democratic rival Ryan appear on national television, calling for unity beyond political divisions.
Their words of reason, however, are drowned out when Grant takes the stage in Iowa, defiantly declaring: “We will never bow to terror.”
Among the crowd, Rafi’s operatives have already taken their positions.
As chaos erupts and the stage collapses, Amir Nasser—once Rafi’s comrade, haunted by the memory of his sister’s death in Gaza—tries desperately to halt the chain of destruction.

“Synopsis”
A Palestinian group from Gaza hacks into North Korea’s cryptocurrency system, stealing hundreds of millions of dollars. Their true goal is not money—but to recreate the lost homeland of Gaza on American soil.
Amid the backdrop of hardline Republican immigration policies and a growing wave of xenophobia, a quiet plan begins to take shape: the gradual collapse of America from within.
During a speech at Madison Square Garden, Republican presidential candidate Justin Bradford is shot. Almost simultaneously in Los Angeles, former president Owen Reed is attacked at a rally for Democratic hopeful Ryan Bennett.
Two assassinations—mirroring one another—ignite a nation’s deepest divide. Yet, against all odds, Justin survives. His blood type is one in 2.5 million: the Bombay Blood Group.
The only person who can donate such blood is Anaya Patel, a community art facilitator working in Brooklyn. Her blood, stored in the Bellevue Hospital Blood Bank, is used for an emergency transfusion that saves the candidate’s life.
Jack Vance, an agent of the U.S. Secret Service, suspects a Gaza-based network behind the attacks. Together with Cameron Bartlett, the FBI Director of the Los Angeles Field Office, and Veronica Reeves, a senior investigator from New York, he begins to uncover a vast conspiracy.
Their investigation leads them to Rafi Gannam, a former architecture student at the Islamic University of Gaza, who has infiltrated redevelopment sites across Los Angeles and New York—embedding C4 explosives deep within beams and structural cores.
His targets: new residential districts where agents of ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) and ERO (Enforcement and Removal Operations) live—symbols of “the order America built.”
Veronica urges the President to pursue dialogue to prevent further destruction, but President Grant M. Ranford refuses to listen.
Meanwhile, the recovering Justin and his Democratic rival Ryan appear on national television, calling for unity beyond political divisions.
Their words of reason, however, are drowned out when Grant takes the stage in Iowa, defiantly declaring: “We will never bow to terror.”
Among the crowd, Rafi’s operatives have already taken their positions.
As chaos erupts and the stage collapses, Amir Nasser—once Rafi’s comrade, haunted by the memory of his sister’s death in Gaza—tries desperately to halt the chain of destruction.
But Rafi’s conviction remains unshaken.
Under the twilight beneath the Williamsburg Bridge, amid the city’s fading noise, the two men part ways.

I wrote in late November about the last photograph I took in Mesa Verde - in a post called "A luminous goodbye." I also mentioned in that post that I was headed to Stanford to interview for a job. How prescient that title was, as I accepted that job and I'll be leaving the city of Chicago come the summertime. The intervening six months will surely bring many new Chicago photographs to the blog, as will the months afterwards - but eventually my contributions to this blog will take a turn for the Californian. I hope you will all still follow me.
In the depths of winter the sun's declination effect makes for *very* long sunrises and sunsets. This is to say that the sun's arc above the horizon is so low that it takes a much longer time for that precious "golden" hour to end - compare this to the summer where the sun sets at a nearly perpendicular angle to the horizon. I scurried about the 25th floor and the floors above to take as many photographs as I could as the sun completed its long descent. I think with today's news, a sunset image is appropriate.
Here is a view of Chicago of which I have *never* seen a photograph. Once upon a time, the 25th floor of the Tribune Tower was an observation deck, open to the public. Nowadays you need to know someone who knows someone to get here. I felt extremely privileged to get a chance to do some photography from this vantage point, and I hope I did it justice. The pavilion is out amongst the flying buttresses of the great tower and affords a sweeping view from the very heart of the mag mile. Although the Gothic stonework was higher than I could extend my tripod, I managed to hang my camera out over the edge and snap a few images. The city really deserves more places like this that everybody can visit - there is something really breathtaking about seeing the place from a new angle, especially with sunset streaming in from the west side and the river in its winter coat of ice. This one is going straight into the Gotham set as well.
I also have to say thanks to those of you who sent me your questions about cameras, HDR, etc to @thewindypixel. I think I answered those that I got. Mark, who has been contacting me as he has started to dabble a bit in HDR, asked in the comments section to yesterday's post what differences exist between the D5000 and the D90. I mentioned yesterday that the D90 affords you much greater control over the camera that does the D5000. I'll elaborate on just a few of the physical differences that I think eventually become important as you expand as a photographer. First I will say that I know a handful of people who have the D5000 and it is a sweet camera - it does just about everything you'd want for a Lilliputian price. This list is in no particular order, once you're done reading it, you'll realize that these differences aren't make-or-break for a beginner - the key is to get a camera that fits your needs/budget/skill and to get out there and take pictures - you make the photograph, the lens transmits the light and the camera is just a hunk of crap that records it.
1. The D90 includes an autofocus motor, making this camera compatible with older lenses. As the lens is the most important part of the equation - imagine the dismay on a user's face who just purchased a D5000 and wants to use their hand-me-down $2800 Nikon 28mm f/1.4 only to find out - you can't focus!!! Okay this is the number one reason - but the rest aren't in order :P.
2. D90 is more durable - we all should be careful with our toys, but you just never know. This translates into a higher guaranteed shutter count, i.e. not only is the body of the camera tougher - it's guts are tougher too. This also means that the camera uses the larger Nikon batteries which provide you with more shots per charge. Unfortunately, with both the D90 and D5000, Nikon has moved away from CF cards to the smaller SD card.
3. The viewfinder of the D90 is bigger, brighter and covers ~95% of the frame instead of a paltry ~75%. This is a big deal when you are composing.
4. The D90 can support a remote cable release and a battery grip - this is really key for HDR - keep your finger off the camera and your camera on a tripod for good HDR. Yes, the D5000 comes with a remote control release and I am *EXTREMELY* jealous of this as equivalent solutions for the D90, D300, D700, D3 etc cost hundreds of dollars. Then again, the D90 will allow you to plug in a wire release that is equally useful and also accepts things like interval timers, etc.
5. The pop-up flash on the D90 will allow you to wirelessly control Nikon flashes - this may not sound like a big deal, but people pay $200 per flash to do this wirelessly if they don't have it built in. Canon owners can only dream. UPDATE: I was wrong about this - the new Canon 7D will do wireless control - I am ignorant of its features, compatibility, etc. My mistake - thanks to Donald for pointing this out in the comments section.

" The Endless Dream Aberration known as The Unknown is one of the earliest known creations of Subject Zero. It is theorized this anomaly was created in utero. The immense psychic energies she carried within her, Patient S.J's future child would become the uncertain legacy she'd leave behind.
DNA samples obtained from the Unknown show a similar genetic make up to Subject Zero... it almost suggests they could be siblings! But that's preposterous! Further analysis will need to be conducted...
The Unknown remains at large, but we can at least confirm that it has not left the bureau. Sightings have showed it near Subject Zero's chambers. There may be more to this "Sibling Theory" after all...
