For Macro Mondays - Hole

I was struggling to come up with a hole for this week, out of time, then this morning I had to burn a CD so decided to use that.

Happy Macro Monday!

End of the day, even construction equipment needs a rest.

Alviso, California.

The historic Robe Obelisk stands on the point of Cape Dombey and was constructed by local builder George Shivas at a cost of £230 in 1855. The Obelisk was used to create a landmark to navigate the entrance into Guichen Bay and to store rocket fired lifesaving equipment for stricken ships.

This older photo was taken with my Panasonic compact camera that has now been converted for infrared. I'll show you a few more infrareds taken with this camera over the next week.

We have a lot of earth works going on at our property, and I am finding so many fascinating elements to document. This is an attachment for the excavator and a big pile of clay material we’re holding onto so that we can hopefully have enough to line a small dam!!

To conclude this short series of old Sydney photos, we'll take a look at the restaurant world.

Mr Wong's Cantonese Restaurant is a huge place, with dining facilities on multiple levels. It is designed to reflect two eras in a converted inner city warehouse: Shanghai prior of the invasion of the Japanese and the rise of Communists; and Prohibition era USA. You'll see some photos from the Prohibition Bar, accessible from Mr Wong's via a secret doorway (of course), in my uploaded collage today. merivale.com/venues/mrwong/

We were there for lunch and the food was as spectacular as the setting.

All these photographs today were taken with the natural lighting and handheld by the Panasonic DMC-FS7 compact camera. If you get a chance to purchase one of these lovely little 10MP pocket cameras, in good secondhand condition, I can tell you it will serve you well.

Coral Sunset Intersectional Itoh Peony .

A sunset in a flower! Aptly named for its awe-inspiring transformation from a radiant, vivid coral through a range of peaches, and finally, a creamy white colour, the flower is a masterpiece at every step of this sunset, and one might argue a bloom only improves with age. Unique from other coral varieties in that it opens with the most intense coral colour and has petals that are more ruffled, which perhaps contribute to a fuller appearance. Has a lower, more compact growing habit than Coral Charm. Mass plantings are recommended as flowers at different colour stages provide a visual riot in the landscape.

Side buds are possible, extending the bloom period. A favourite of the peony garden, this outstanding peony produces intense sunset coral, semi-double blossoms with rose overtones and a fluffy deep yellow stamens in the center. The lightly fragrant flowers are long lasting in fresh bouquets. ‘Coral Sunset’ blooms early in the peony season, around late spring in Ontario It is highly prized for its exemplary plant habit. and by florist as cut flower in bouquets.

Amazing how the big the wings of the brown Pelican can fold down into a very compact flying torpedo. The brown pelican can dive head first into water to catch a meal. And seagulls often try to steal their catch out. I hope to catch the seagull getting away with the theft on camera soon.

Macro Monday's and the theme of "Pins".

A straightforward photo this week. I decided to focus on the pins of a Compact Flash card reader, It was slightly easier than using my Nikon D200 as a subject where the pins are quite recessed inside the camera. The card reader also has a blue light that illuminates when it is plugged in.

Compact flash cards are the reason I mainly use a lead to connect the camera too my laptop. I had heard stories when I first got my Nikon D70 of the possibility of pins getting bent in the CF card port so to this day I am still in the habit of using a lead.

Relatively small and compact yellow-bellied trogon of tropical lowland forest, mainly in humid areas. Perches at mid to upper levels, often high in canopy. Male has yellow eyering, female has broken white eyering; both sexes have narrow black-and-white barring on underside of tail. Female Gartered has white barring on its closed wings which female Black-headed Trogon lacks. Digs its nest in large arboreal wasp nests. Used to be known as Violaceous Trogon. (eBird)

Unedited version of the moon last night, is it the furthest reached for a compact, probably but of course it's all pointless.

This is an 'extra' frame of a scene I included in my book, Little Visions of Home, back in 2011. The photo itself is from a compact camera and it was captured back in 2008. I've converted the JPEG to a 16-bit Adobe RGB file and had a go with 'modern' processing methods to see what I could drag out of it. This particular camera can't record raw files, so this was the best I could get out of it. Not bad, really (at least that's my opinion).
