The Basra Compact, a flagship partnership to revive the economy in southern Iraq
Basra, 05 May 2015 – The authorities of Basra and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) today signed a flagship agreement, the Basra Compact, aiming at strengthening participatory and accountable governance and reviving the economic activity in the southern governorate, which is not just oil-rich but needs to invest in its human capacity and private sector development. Protecting the cultural and ecological heritage of the Mesopotamian Marshlands is also a priority.
Despite being the richest governorate and hosting the main port in Iraq, Umm Qasr—the only shipping hub in the country—Basra is one of the most affected by poverty and chronic unemployment with 16.1% of the population living below the poverty line of US$ 2.5 per day and facing staggering challenges in terms of access to services.
The memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with Basra authorities outlines future cooperation in the areas of decentralization, financial management and budget execution, environment protection, private sector development including micro, small and medium enterprises, and supporting the governorate’s 5-year strategic planning.
“Working with local partners is a fundamental element of national ownership,” the Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General and UNDP Resident Representative, Lise Grande, said. “This translates into UNDP’s support for the local network of the Global Compact promoting responsible business practices in the areas of gender, human rights, labour standards, environment, service delivery and anti-corruption,” she explained.
UNDP has nearly 40 years of experience in Iraq leading the UN’s development work, providing knowledge and practical expertise. In its long-term engagement with the government and the people of Iraq, UNDP focuses on inclusive participation, accountability, access to justice, women’s empowerment, security sector reform, decentralization and private sector development. In particular, UNDP supports the government’s 4-year development plans (2014-2017).

Compact small chair is made of 18 wooden square shape laths that are connected by grooves without glues, nails or similar materials.
Item is kind of a "mind game" because you have to find unique way to assemble and disassemble it, but it has a decorative purpose in the first place (e.g. plant stand.....).

Taken on my compact camera, suprised how well it came out, I always have it on me, but it doesnt get much use, but turns out to be quite good for these kinds of shot, especially since I dont have any really wide lenses for the SLR
Arived at the tower during day light, but wanted to get some night shots. Was supposed to be meeting my friend but ended up being about an hour or so late because I was waiting for it to get dark. Anyway he wasnt too annoyed, well I hope not.

Original caption: This image, captured by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope’s Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3), shows a galaxy named UGC 6093. As can be easily seen, UGC 6093 is something known as a barred spiral galaxy — it has beautiful arms that swirl outwards from a bar slicing through the galaxy’s centre. It is classified as an active galaxy, which means that it hosts an active galactic nucleus, or AGN: a compact region at a galaxy’s centre within which material is dragged towards a supermassive black hole. As this black hole devours the surrounding matter it emits intense radiation, causing it to shine brightly. But UGC 6093 is more exotic still. The galaxy essentially acts as a giant astronomical laser that spews out light at microwave, not visible, wavelengths — this type of object is dubbed a megamaser (maser being the term for a microwave laser). Megamasers such as UGC 6093 can be some 100 million times brighter than masers found in galaxies like the Milky Way. Hubble’s WFC3 observes light spanning a range wavelengths — from the near-infrared, through the visible range, to the near-ultraviolet. It has two channels that detect and process different light, allowing astronomers to study a remarkable range of astrophysical phenomena; for example, the UV-visible channel can study galaxies undergoing massive star formation, while the near-infrared channel can study redshifted light from galaxies in the distant Universe. Such multi-band imaging makes Hubble invaluable in studying megamaser galaxies, as it is able to untangle their intriguing complexity.
