NJCDC's 19th Anniversary Dinner

Anjuman school is a picture of neglect with badly maintained classrooms, no safe drinking water and damaged auditorium. School children including 325 sponsored children had to bear the

brunt of this. The conflict between the two local trusts had put the school in

this pathetic condition. The school authorities requested World Vision Mumbai East ADP to help the school. We renovated classrooms & laboratories and also fit the water filters within the school premises so that children will have access to clean and safe drinking water.

This motivated both the trusts to work towards the welfare of the children. They came together and cleared the differences within them. Now they have renovated 8 classrooms, one auditorium and the school entrance. Today, both the staff and children are very happy. Ms. Shaikh Akhtari, Head Master, Primary Section, said “World Vision has done a good job. They have helped build peace between the two trusts and have also extended support to our school"

Ajithakumari wakes up at 5 every morning, makes tea and snacks for the villagers till 8:30. Then she makes breakfast for her two sons who then leave for school. She then turns to milking her 3 cows. She uses the milk in her tea shop. From 3 in the afternoon to 9pm in the night she is back at the shop. Tea, snacks and dosa are made available for the villagers at a nominal cost. Dinner is to be made for her sons and a good nights rest before she wakes up at 5 in the morning again.

A day in the life of Ajithakumari who lost her husband to a heart attack 10 years ago. But that day seems light and happy for her as her son’s support her through the day. 16 year old Vishnu knows how to make tea, 14 year old Anandu serves it. They take care of the shop single handedly when their mother heads for the kitchen to make food for them. Vishnu even goes to his mothers SHG meeting when ever she is held up at the shop. They seem very happy together, smiling and handing out banana pakoda snacks and tea to the tired villager.

But it was not always this happy. Even though Ajithakumari would go hungry to send her sons to school, Vishnu would skip classes. All they had was a calf which they took care of in remembrance of the father. It was years later that the calf became a cow and started giving milk. The cow also gave birth to two more calves and what started as a sentiment became a livelihood.

So who helped the family for all these years. World Vision India through it’s economic assistance program helped establish Ajithakumari’s tea shop. It helped her with tables chairs and a roof over the shop so they can provide service even when it rains. The education assistance motivated Vishnu to go to school regularly. He got a school bag and books and his health was regularly monitored.

World Vision started a football team (players wearing white jersey) many years back for children in slums. Many of the players have faced child labour in some form – from cleaning drainages to working in tea shops, hotels and mechanic shops.

Now that their life has changed tide with help from World Vision India, they came together to raise awareness for children who are bound by the chains of child labour in sports goods industry...especially stitching of footballs in places like Meerut and Jalandar.

They played a passionate game on the World Day Against Child Labour to send the message loud and clear – END CHILD LABOUR

Three kids, covered in dirt and dust, were wandering about the streets of Guwahati trying to make a living from their harsh environment. Scabs and sores bore evidence to their ongoing lack and need.

With no home to stay, no proper food to eat and no one to love and care, life was not easy. They began to wash utensils in the hotels; in return they got food for their survival.

Rahul’s father had abandoned him when he was just 12 years old and his mother had expired some years back. The responsibility of taking care of his younger brother, Babli, and younger sister, Ganga, now fell on his little shoulders.

Poor living conditions made these children vulnerable to several diseases. Ganga suffered seriously from severe wound infected by maggots on her head. Anguish and suffering seemed to replace fun and joy of childhood.

In this miserable condition, education was but a distant dream. With such a meager income and poor food, the thought of education never dawned in them.

Fortunately though, their life did not continue the same! World Vision came for their aid.

Ganga was given emergency medical treatment and she recovered completely. In the World Vision Guwahati street children project, they are given good education and proper care. They are taught to read and write, they are given awareness on various social issues and personality development classes are held.
